Licorice as a herbal extract in periodontal therapy.

Periodontal disease is caused by specific pathogens which results in inflammation of the tooth-supporting structures and subsequently causes the continued breakdown of alveolar bone and periodontal ligament. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is a perennial herb with substantial medicinal value. Licorice extract is derived from dried, unpeeled stolons and roots of Glycyrrhiza uralensis and G. glabra. The bioactive ingredients in licorice extract such as glycyrrhizin, licoricidin, glabridin, licochalcone A, and licorisoflavan A have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-adherence effects that a

Generalized pulp canal obliteration in a patient on long-term glucocorticoids: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: The calcification of the tooth pulp is a pathological condition that occurs in response to various factors. A uncommon haematological condition known as paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) is characterized by bouts of haemolysis, and it requires long-term use of glucocorticoids (GCs). CASE PRESENTATION: A female patient who was diagnosed with PNH and had a history of long-term use of GCs came to our department for root canal therapy (RCT) for teeth 25, 26, and 27. The radiographs showed generalized pulp canal obliteration (PCO) in most of the patients. None of these teeth (

Continuous archwire technique for the correction of completely transposed maxillary incisors.

Tooth transposition is an uncommon disorder related to ectopic eruption; it can be classified as complete or incomplete on the basis of the position of the crowns and roots of transposed teeth. Aligning the transposed teeth to a normal sequence is always complex and challenging, especially in patients with complete transposition. The segmented archwire technique with cantilever or loops has been used in many transposition patients; however, it requires considerable laboratory work and is sometimes uncomfortable for the patient. In this case report, we present a novel orthodontic treatment for

Bone Density and Dental External Apical Root Resorption.

When orthodontic patients desire shorter treatment times with aesthetic results and long-term stability, it is important for the orthodontist to understand the potential limitations and problems that may arise during standard and/or technology-assisted accelerated treatment. Bone density plays an important role in facilitating orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), such that reductions in bone density can significantly increase movement velocity. Lifestyle, genetic background, environmental factors, and disease status all can influence a patients' overall health and bone density. In some individual

Management and prevention of gingival recession.

Gingival recession is highly prevalent worldwide. It increases the risk for root caries and can interfere with patient comfort, function and esthetics. Progressive gingival recession also increases the risk of tooth loss secondary to clinical attachment loss. Although mitigating the causes of gingival recession decreases its incidence and severity, implementing practical management and prevention strategies in the clinical setting can be challenging. Identification of susceptible patients and evaluating them for the presence of modifiable risk exposures are essential first steps in developing

Unusual complication after genioplasty.

Facial beauty depends on shape, proportion, and harmony between the facial thirds. The chin is one of the most important components of the inferior third and has an important role on the definition of facial aesthetic and harmony in both frontal and lateral views. There are 2 principal therapeutic approaches that one can choose to treat mental deformities, alloplastic implants, and mental basilar ostectomy, also known as genioplasty. The latest is more commonly used because of great versatility in the correction of three-dimensional deformities of the chin and smaller taxes of postoperative co

Long-term management of a child with regional odontodysplasia: a case report.

Regional odontodysplasia, or "ghost teeth," is a dental abnormality derived from both epithelial and mesenchymal components of the tooth bud. Teeth within a particular quadrant are affected. Affected teeth usually have thin enamel and dentin of poor quality with shortened roots, open apices, or enlarged pulp chambers. The permanent teeth and maxillary arch are observed to be more severely affected than primary teeth and the mandibular arch (ratio=1.6:1), respectively. Eruption of the affected teeth is delayed or may not happen. The cause of the phenomenon is unknown. Since this problem affects

Facial and oral reconstruction following trauma and failed chin implant: a case report.

Functional and esthetic reconstruction of a patient with microgenia who sustained traumatic injury was successfully accomplished using Brånemark System osseointegrated implants (Nobel Biocare USA, Inc., Yorba Linda, CA) to support a permanent dental prosthesis following mechanical and biologic reconstruction of the anterior mandible and chin. A 25-year-old glycine chin implant previously used for facial esthetic enhancement had eroded the anterior cortical plate and migrated through the medullary bone, compressing the periosteum into the apex of the anterior tooth roots. Further destruction of

The pathobiology of periodontal diseases may affect systemic diseases: inversion of a paradigm.

A new paradigm for the pathobiology of periodontitis is presented, and the manner in which periodontitis may relate to susceptibility for certain systemic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and preterm labor is described. Periodontitis is caused by a small group of Gram-negative bacteria present on the tooth root surfaces as bioffilms. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and other substances gain access to the gingival tissues, initiate and perpetuate immunoinflammation, resulting in production of high levels of proinflammatory cytokines. These induce production of matrix metalloproteinases which de

["Carious" and "noncarious" lesions of the hard dental tissues. Ultrastructural (SEM) and microanalytical (EDS) analyses of teeth from the 3rd century B.C].

The study was carried out on 80 teeth (70 of permanent dentition and 10 of primary one) of mandibular and maxillary bones. The teeth owned to subjects lived in the III c.b.C. in Sicily, and they were found in Naxos necropolis. The teeth were examined as far as carious and non carious lesions, then they were prepared for instrumental analyses by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy dispersed X ray spectrometry (EDS). To an objective examination of the sample no caries were detected in the teeth sample apart one tooth, on the other hand there was an extensive occlusal abrasion, from a m

[Dens invaginatus--its etiology, incidence and clinical characteristics (I). A review].

Dens invaginatus is a rare malformation of teeth, showing a broad spectrum of morphological variations. A genetical determination cannot be excluded. The incidence of dental invaginations cannot be determined exactly, the data from different investigations range from 0.25% to 10%. The majority of epidemiological studies present an incidence of more than 2%. Most affected are maxillary lateral incisors, bilateral occurrence is not uncommon (43%). The aetiology of dens invaginatus is still not entirely known. Most probably the invagination has its origin in a deep folding of the foramen caecum d

Eruption of impacted permanent upper incisors after removal of of supernumerary teeth.

In a retrospective study of 63 patients, an attempt is made to determine in how many cases retained permanent upper incisors erupt after the removal of supernumerary teeth, and what predisposing and etiological factors are of importance. It proved that the eruption of a supernumerary tooth positively contributed to the chance of a spontaneous eruption of the permanent incisors. No relationship could be demonstrated between the age of a patient from whom supernumeraries were extracted, the number of supernumeraries, the extent of root formation, marked apical displacement and the chance of spon

Microscopic features of the lateral periodontal cyst.

The lateral periodontal cyst is of developmental odontogenic origin and must be differentiated from the gingival cyst of adults, a primordial cyst in a lateral periodontal position, and a cyst of inflammatory origin. This paper is based on a histologic study of five cases. Four were in the mandibular premolar region and one in the lateral incisor-canine region of the maxilla. The cysts are lined by a thin non-keratinized epithelium which resembles the reduced enamel epithelium. Many of them arecharacterized by the presence of localized plaque-like thickenings of their epithelial linings, consi

Exploring the morphology and clinical relevance of accessory canals: A scoping review of classification, variations, and endodontic implications.

BACKGROUND: Accessory canals are complex anatomical components of the root canal system that may provide communication between the pulp space and periodontal tissues. Their variable morphology, inconsistent terminology, and differences in detection methods have made comparison between studies difficult. Advances in three-dimensional imaging have improved their characterization, but the available evidence remains fragmented. AIM: To map the existing evidence on accessory canal morphology, with particular emphasis on classification systems, anatomical distribution and variation, investigative a

Fixed contralateral anchored suturing for coronal flap advancement.

BACKGROUND: Fixed contralateral anchored suturing (FICAS) for coronal flap advancement is a novel suturing technique that utilizes ceramic attachments bonded to the buccal or lingual of the teeth as an anchorage point for suspensory sutures. This technique is designed to increase flap stability and improve graft adaptation in periodontal plastic surgery. METHODS: Two patients with localized gingival recession defects were treated with connective tissue grafting. One case used a tunneling technique, and the other used a coronally advanced flap. A ceramic button is bonded to the tooth surface c

[Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia: A case report].

Cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) is an uncommon, non-neoplastic benign fibro-osseous lesion of the jaws, characterized by cementum-like tissue deposition. It primarily affects middle-aged women of African and East Asian descent. Generally asymptomatic, this condition is frequently identified incidentally through radiographs showing radiopacities with radiolucent rims. This report presented a case of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FLCOD) in a 45-year-old Asian female. The patient exhibited secondary caries extending to the pulp chamber on the left mandibular first molar, showed no signs of pu

From primary to secondary care level: Assessing patient retention of periodontal staging and grading information.

BACKGROUND: Accurate communication of periodontal stage and grade by general dentists in primary care is critical for patient understanding and engagement, yet patient retention and self-reporting of this information upon referral to secondary care remains unclear. METHODS: A total of 372 periodontal patients referred were informed about their diagnosis by their general dentists and then referred to secondary care level. Data were collected through an eight-item periodontal staging and grading (PSG) questionnaire, along with demographic, medical, and dental records. Periodontal diagnoses were

The Effectiveness of Micro-osteoperforations during Canine Retraction: A Three-dimensional Randomized Clinical Trial.

AIM: A major challenge in orthodontics is decreasing treatment time without compromising treatment outcome. The purpose of this split-mouth trial was to evaluate micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight patients of both genders were selected, age ranging between 15 and 40 years, with Class II Division 1 malocclusion. The participants in this trial with MOPs were randomly allocated to either the right or the left side, distal to the maxillary canine. First maxillary premolars were extracted as part of the treatment plan on both sid

Nonsurgical Management of Perforating Internal Root Resorption in Maxillary Invaginated Lateral Incisor Using Cold Ceramic.

The clastic activity results in internal root resorption (IRR), characterized by the progressive destruction of the surrounding dental hard tissues. This case reports perforating IRR in an advanced stage on a maxillary dens invaginated lateral incisor in a 13-year-old patient who completed orthodontic treatment 6 months ago. The perforating IRR was initially detected by periapical radiographs, and CBCT was used to accurately diagnose with full detail, enabling treatment planning and the identification of the extension and regions affected in the resorption lesion.
