The Influence of Absorbent Products on Skin Integrity: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Absorbent products are commonly used to absorb urine and fecal matter and to mitigate potential skin complications such as incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD). Evidence concerning the effect these products have on skin integrity is limited. This scoping review aimed to explore the evidence/literature on the effect of absorbent containment products on skin integrity. METHOD: A scoping literature review. SEARCH STRATEGY: The electronic databases CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, and Scopus were searched for published articles between 2014 and 2019. Inclusion criteria were studies that foc

Association between pelvic floor disorders and bone mineral density: Findings from the HUNT study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between pelvic floor disorders (pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and anal incontinence) and bone mineral density (BMD). STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study of 6809 women who participated in the third survey of the population-based Norwegian HUNT study was undertaken. BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Information on BMD and self-reported pelvic floor disorders from the HUNT study was linked with hospital-derived data on diagnosis and surgical treatment of pelvic floor disorders. BMD was categorized according to the World H

Can running influence women's sexual function?

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Studies have shown that athletes have three times increased risk of urinary incontinence compared to non-athletes, in addition to anal incontinence and sexual dysfunction (SD). This study aimed to assess the sexual and pelvic floor muscle (PFM) functions and to compare these variables among female athlete runners with and without SD and to identify predictive factors that may be associated with sexual function among the athletes. METHODS: Cross-sectional study including 90 female runners, who ran ≥ 20 km/week for at least 6 months, had had sexual intercourse in th

Knowledge of pelvic floor problems: a study of third trimester, primiparous women.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Pelvic floor problems in women (urinary incontinence, faecal incontinence, uterovaginal prolapse) are common, and have an adverse effect on quality of life. We hypothesized that there is low knowledge of these problems amongst primiparous women in their third trimester of pregnancy. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in antenatal clinics of three hospitals in London, UK, from 2011 to 2013. Primiparous women aged ≥18 years and in the third trimester of pregnancy answered questions on pelvic floor problems. Knowledge scores were calculated based on the pr

The Effects of Suburethral Tape on the Symptoms of Overactive Bladder.

Suburethral tension-free vaginal tape is used for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence with a high success rate. Often patients report having stress incontinence, as well as co-existing micturition problems which are attributable to overactive bladder syndrome (OAB). The present study examines the effect of suburethral tape on the symptoms of OAB. In the study, we used the transobturator vaginal tape inside-out technique (TVT-O). Materials and Methods: 53 patients were included in the study, all had proven urodynamic stress incontinence and symptoms of overactive bladder. The patients

A 2-year prospective follow-up study of lower urinary tract symptoms in patients treated with clozapine.

Urinary incontinence and enuresis are well-known side effects of clozapine. However, clinical experience has shown that patients also suffer from diverse lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The natural course of clozapine-related LUTS is unclear. Thus, a longitudinal follow-up study is needed. A total of 101 subjects who were taking clozapine initially participated. Their LUTS were evaluated using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), other questionnaires, and a medical records review. After 2 years, 87 of the original subjects could be contacted, and the status of their LUTS was r

[Marshall-Marchetti-Khrantz operation for stress incontinence. 100 cases (author's transl)].

The authors report a series of 100 cases of stress incontinence of urine in the woman, treated by Marshall-Marchetti-Khrantz operation. In reoperations for urinary incontinence which has already been treated surgically, the authors deliberately opened the bladder in order to clearly visualise the bladder neck and trigone and hence insert the juxta-cervico-urethral sutures in the best possible position. It is of interest to note the severity of Retzius haematomas (even though rare: 3 cases) and the risk of transfixion of the excretory system by a suture which leads to the development of bladder

Temporary prostate brachytherapy alone or as boost: Single-institution experience on dose-response assessment focusing on sphincter-related urinary toxicity.

PURPOSE: To investigate the relation between radiation dose to organs at risk (OARs), including internal and external urethral sphincters (IUS, EUS), and the occurrence of urinary toxicity in patients treated with high-dose-rate (HDR) and pulsed-dose-rate (PDR) prostate brachytherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two-hundred eighty patients treated with HDR or PDR brachytherapy as monotherapy or boost after external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) between 2012 and 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. Prostate, urethra, bladder, rectum, IUS, and EUS were contoured on transrectal ultrasound (TRUS). Physi

Functional Outcomes After Transanal Total Mesorectal Excision (taTME) for Rectal Cancer: Results From the Phase II North American Multicenter Prospective Observational Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate fecal incontinence and defecatory, urinary, and sexual functional outcomes after transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME). BACKGROUND: Proctectomy for rectal cancer may result in alterations in defecatory, urinary, and sexual function that persist beyond 12 months. The recent multicenter phase II taTME trial demonstrated the safety of taTME in patients with stage I to III tumors. METHODS: Prospectively registered self-reported questionnaires were collected from 100 taTME patients. Fecal continence [Fecal Incontinence Quality of Life (FIQL), Wexner], defecatory fu

Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Correlation With Motor and Cognitive Function in Patients With Parkinson Disease.

PURPOSE: Parkinson disease (PD) is a common, progressive neurodegenerative disease, affecting approximately 1% of the population over 60. The associated morbidity and mortality are increasing at a faster rate than for any other neurological disorder. Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are reported in up to 85% of patients and can significantly impair quality of life (QoL). There are few studies to date that utilise the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to assess cognitive performance and compare this to motor symptoms and LUTS severity. METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study was

Voiding dysfunction following TVT procedure.

The aim of the study was to assess the incidence of abnormal voiding in patients who had undergone tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) placement. Women who had undergone a TVT sling procedure for stress or mixed incontinence more than 3 months previously reported their voiding habits (frequency, urgency, nocturia, urinary stream quality and incontinence) over the previous 3 days. A pelvic examination and ultrasound postvoid residual (PVR) were performed. Normal voiding was classified as a PVR <100 ml, frequency of six or fewer voids per day and two or fewer per night, and a urinary stream consider
