A single intranigral administration of β-sitosterol β-d-glucoside elicits bilateral sensorimotor and non-motor alterations in the rat.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neuropathology characterized by motor and non-motor alterations. β-sitosterol β-d-glucoside (BSSG) is a neurotoxin whose prolonged oral administration in rats has been proposed as a new PD model. Herein, we demonstrate that a single, unilateral, and intranigral administration of BSSG also elicits bilateral sensorimotor alterations in the rat. Six behavioral tests evaluated the effect of different concentrations of BSSG (3, 6, 9, and 12 μg/μL DMSO) from 15 to 120 days after administration. The first behavioral alterations, which appeared on day 15, were

[Prediction of the risk of falls and fractures using stabilometric studies in the elderly.].

The purpose of our study was to evaluate the parameters of the stabilogram in people over 65 years of age and to identify the parameters of the stabilometric study, which had statistically significant connections with falls and fractures. The study included 308 patients older than 65 years, living in their own homes. To perform the research tests with open (OG) and eyes closed (MO). It uses the European approach positioning stop on the platform: the patient is installed in the position of the foot heels together, toes apart. Patients during the testing behavior did not use orthopedic vehicles a

Testing an integrated behavioural and biomedical model of disability in N-of-1 studies with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has supported an integrated biomedical and behavioural model explaining activity limitations. However, further tests of this model are required at the within-person level, because while it proposes that the constructs are related within individuals, it has primarily been tested between individuals in large group studies. We aimed to test the integrated model at the within-person level. METHOD: Six correlational N-of-1 studies in participants with arthritis, chronic pain and walking limitations were carried out. Daily measures of theoretical constructs were collec

Computerized static posturographic assessment after treatment of equinus deformity in children with cerebral palsy.

Assessment of treatments in children with cerebral palsy has been well developed, especially in the gait laboratory. However, the prerequisite for walking is adequate postural control. We hypothesize that a treatment of an equinus deformity should improve postural control. Balance control was assessed by static posturography on the Balance Master. Nine diplegic children, six girls and three boys, participated in the study. Assessment was conducted before and after treatment of the equinus deformity. Two static tests (Weight Bearing Squat and the modified Clinical Test for Sensory Interaction o

Effect of 4-min vertical whole body vibration on muscle performance and body balance: a randomized cross-over study.

The purpose of this randomized cross-over study was to investigate the effects of a 4-min long, 2-mm vertically-vibrating vibration-exercise on muscle performance and body balance in healthy subjects. Sixteen volunteers (eight men and women aged 18-35 years) underwent both the 4-min vibration- and sham-interventions in a randomized order on different days. Performance- and balance-tests (stability platform, grip strength, extension strength of lower extremities, tandem-walk, vertical jump and shuttle-run) were done 10 minutes before (baseline) and 2 and 60 minutes after the intervention. Postural and performance changes following exposures to flight simulators.

Flight simulators are cost-effective, safe, and flexible training tools for aviators. However, their advantages may be offset by the occurrence of motion sickness-like symptoms which have been reported during and following simulator training. Although symptoms have been well documented in simulators, their time course, causes, and implications for training are not yet fully understood. Tests of standing and walking steadiness were administered along with cognitive and motor performance tests to Navy and Marine Corps aviators before and after their regular simulator training, resulting in recor

Are the Physical and Cognitive Functions of Older Adults Affected by Having a Driver's License?-A Pilot Study of Suburban Dwellers.

Previous studies have frequently reported that those with a driver's license have better physical and cognitive functions than those without. However, there are many people in the world who do not need or who cannot have a driver's license. We hypothesized that if the non-driver's license group had the same or better physical and cognitive functioning as the driver's license group, they could lead healthy lives without the risk of functional decline or loss of functioning due to surrendering their licenses or giving up driving. The subjects were 47 community-dwelling older adults. We measured

Effects of toxic exposure to molds and mycotoxins in building-related illnesses.

The authors studied 100 patients who had been exposed to toxic molds in their homes. The predominant molds identified were Alternaria, Cladosporium, Aspergillus, Penicillium, Stachybotrys, Curvularia, Basidiomycetes, Myxomycetes, smuts, Epicoccus, Fusarium, Bipolaris, and Rhizopus. A variety of tests were performed on all, or on subgroups of, these patients. Sensitivities and exposures were confirmed in all patients by intradermal skin testing for individual molds (44-98% positive), and by measurement of serum antibodies. Abnormalities in T and B cells, and subsets, were found in more than 80%

Lumbar puncture tap test in iNPH: Does extracting different volumes of CSF change the clinical response?

INTRODUCTION: Although the Lumbar Tap Test (LTT) typically involves removing 30-50 ml of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the optimal amount for a valid test is unclear. This study investigates the relationship between the volume of CSF removed and the extent of gait improvement in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). METHODS: Seventy-six iNPH patients with gait improvement after LTT were divided into two groups: high CSF volume (> 40 ml) and low CSF volume (< 40 ml). Spearman's r correlations and non-parametric t-tests were used to analyze the relationship between CSF volume removed an

An original method of simulating the articular cartilage in the context of in vitro biomechanical studies investigating the proximal femur.

Biomechanical testing is a necessity given the development of novel implants used in the osteosynthesis of hip fractures. The purpose of biomechanical testing is to recreate realistic conditions similar to the in vivo conditions. Although biomechanical testing of hip arthroplasty has been standardized since the 1970s, there is no consensus at present on testing methodology for osteosynthesis of hip fractures. Most biomechanical studies examining the fractures of the proximal femur in order to optimize implants opt for loading the bone-implant ensemble directly on the femoral head or using a me
