Complementary medicine among individuals experiencing homelessness in Switzerland: a quantitative and qualitative descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are disproportionately affected by health issues yet remain underserved by the health care system. Emerging findings suggest that complementary medicine (CM) approaches might help address the low access to earlier treatment and the complex needs of this population. Very little research has explored this topic in Europe. Thus, this study aimed to explore perceptions, experiences, and interests in CM among PEH in Switzerland. METHODS: Participants (N = 123) were PEH in French-speaking Switzerland who completed a questionnaire assessing their us

Students' and faculty members' perceptions of the online component of a blended internal medicine clerkship course: a mixed-method evaluation.

BACKGROUND: While online learning works well for preclinical medical education, it has limitations in clinical training. Therefore, blended learning has gained attentions as an alternative. The success of blended learning needs more attention than pure online learning or face-to-face instruction. Students and faculty members are required to manage their tasks properly using online technology disregarding the face-to-face component of blended learning. At Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), the undergraduate internal medicine course was redesigned as a blended learning course due to t

The role of food as part of person-centred palliative care: An exploratory ethnographic study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care is about more than providing high-quality medical care; it is about maximizing quality of life while dying. The role that food plays in palliative care is not well studied or understood. Most research on food in palliative care focuses on nutrition, rather than the importance of serving food that patients recognize, enjoy, and want to consume. This study aimed to understand the role of food as an integral part of person-centred palliative care. METHODS: We engaged with patients, caregivers, staff, and hospital decision-makers at the Bruyère Health Palliative Care U

"Anything can happen": experiences of people using opioids in a xylazine market.

BACKGROUND: Xylazine is associated with a number of negative health outcomes, such as severe wounds and withdrawal. As xylazine increasingly emerges in drug markets across the United States, there is an urgent need for a national response to reduce related harm. As such, healthcare systems, harm reduction organizations, and community members continue to work to identify and develop the best approaches for harm reduction interventions to address xylazine challenges. This study engaged people who use opioids (PWUO) in Philadelphia to explore current experiences with and responses to xylazine adu

Anticipated Acceptability of Blended Learning Among Lay Health Care Workers in Malawi: Qualitative Analysis Guided by the Technology Acceptance Model.

BACKGROUND: HIV index case testing (ICT) aims to identify people living with HIV and their contacts, engage them in HIV testing services, and link them to care. ICT implementation has faced challenges in Malawi due to limited counseling capacity among lay health care workers (HCWs). Enhancing capacity through centralized face-to-face training is logistically complex and expensive. A decentralized blended learning approach to HCW capacity-building, combining synchronous face-to-face and asynchronous digital modalities, may be an acceptable way to address this challenge. OBJECTIVE: The objectiv

Challenges and prospects in integrating abortion care with HIV/family planning services as a one-stop maternal health service in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Challenges such as work overload, insufficient infrastructure, shortage of logistical supplies and healthcare providers and a standalone health service can hinder access to comprehensive healthcare. Integrated health services, therefore, can potentially improve service quality, lower costs, decrease facility visits, and reduce stigma and discrimination, particularly due to the religious, moral, cultural, and political factors surrounding abortion care. OBJECTIVE: To describe the challenges and potential advantages of integrating abortion care into HIV and family planning service

Using a tablet to understand the spatial and temporal characteristics of complex upper limb movements in chronic stroke.

Robotic devices are commonly used to quantify sensorimotor function of the upper limb after stroke; however, the availability and cost of such devices make it difficult to facilitate implementation in clinical environments. Tablets (e.g. iPad) can be used as devices to facilitate rehabilitation but are rarely used as assessment tools for the upper limb. The current study aimed to implement a tablet-based Maze Navigation Task to examine complex upper-limb movement in individuals with chronic stroke. We define complex upper-limb movement as reaching movements that require multi-joint coordinatio

Malaria elimination challenges in countries approaching the last mile: a discussion among regional stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: The national malaria control programmes in Cambodia, Nepal, and Bhutan aim to achieve malaria elimination by 2025-2030. While the vivax malaria burden remains challenging, the consistent decline in falciparum malaria in these countries over the last five years suggests that the goal is achievable. However, unexpected cases in previously falciparum malaria-free districts continue to occur. A virtual meeting was convened in May 2024, followed by smaller meetings, to discuss and share experiences among regional partners, focusing on falciparum malaria elimination. MAIN TEXT: The disc

National burden of gambling in Japan: an estimation from an online-based cross-sectional investigation and national epidemiological survey.

BACKGROUND: Gambling is a popular leisure activity in many countries, often expected to boost regional economies. Nevertheless, its negative impacts remain a significant concern. Gambling disorder is recognized as the most severe consequence; however, even non- or low-risk gamblers may also face negative impacts. This study aimed to estimate the number of Japanese gamblers experiencing gambling-related harm (GRH) and its distribution across six life domains, financial, relational, emotional, health, social and other aspects, based on the severity of their problem gambling risk. METHODS: This

Examining factors contributing to the socioeconomic inequalities in handgrip strength among older adults in India: a decomposition analysis.

The purpose of this study was to examine (a) the socioeconomic status (SES)-related inequalities associated with handgrip strength (HGS); and (b) the extent to which several demographic, health, and behavioral factors contributed to such SES disparities in HGS among older adults in India. Data were drawn from the 2017-2018 wave 1 of the Longitudinal Ageing Study of India (LASI). The study sample included 27,707 older adults (13,199 men and 14,508 women) aged 60 years and older. HGS was assessed using a handheld Smedley's Hand Dynamometer with a cut-off of 19.5 kg for men and 12.5 kg for women.

Collecting and reporting adverse events in low-income settings-perspectives from vaccine trials in the Gambia.

BACKGROUND: Despite Africa's significant infectious disease burden, it is underrepresented in global vaccine clinical trials. While this trend is slowly reversing, it is important to recognize and mitigate the challenges that arise when conducting vaccine clinical trials in this environment. These challenges stem from a variety of factors peculiar to the population and may negatively impact adverse event collection and reporting if not properly addressed. METHODS: As a team of clinical researchers working within the MRCG (Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia), we have conducted 12 phase 1

Characterization of the temporal stability of ToM and pain functional brain networks carry distinct developmental signatures during naturalistic viewing.

A temporally stable functional brain network pattern among coordinated brain regions is fundamental to stimulus selectivity and functional specificity during the critical period of brain development. Brain networks that are recruited in time to process internal states of others' bodies (like hunger and pain) versus internal mental states (like beliefs, desires, and emotions) of others' minds allow us to ask whether a quantitative characterization of the stability of these networks carries meaning during early development and constrain cognition in a specific way. Previous research provides cri

Building a Systems Map: Applying Systems Thinking to Unhealthy Commodity Industry Influence on Public Health Policy.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy commodity industries (UCIs) engage in political practices to influence public health policy, which poses barriers to protecting and promoting public health. Such influence exhibits characteristics of a complex system. Systems thinking would therefore appear to be a useful lens through which to study this phenomenon, potentially deepening our understanding of how UCI influence are interconnected with one another through their underlying political, economic and social structures. As such this study developed a qualitative systems map to depict the complex pathways through w

Testing associations between assessments of cognitive flexibility and eating disorder symptoms in adolescent bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive rigidity, or difficulty adapting to changing demands, is commonly observed in anorexia nervosa. Less is known, however, about cognitive flexibility (CF) in bulimia nervosa (BN) and, particularly, adolescence. Clarifying this relation and best assessment practices may guide informed clinical decision-making. The current study compared how two measures of CF (i.e., Wisconsin Card Sort Task [WCST] and Trail Making Task [TMT]) relate to BN symptoms among adolescents. METHODS: Data from a subsample (n = 78) of adolescents with BN were analyzed. Linear and hurdle regressions we
