Flexor hallucis longus impingement syndrome: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Long-term friction of the FHL tendon's sheath (caused by sporting activities) can result in tendinitis, which causes pain in the foot and ankle and consequently interferes with everyday life and foot function. The FHL tendon is crucial for maintaining foot stability and can be damaged by overuse. FHL tendinitis can be also caused by inflammatory tendon sheath filled. Arthroscopy can play a role in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old female with left ankle pain was brought to our clinic after slipping on a train platform

The use of a thin guide-wire for urethral definition in prostate SBRT treatments with Cyberknife.

PURPOSE: To study and analyze the effect of the use of a thin guide-wire instead of a Foley catheter for urethral definition in prostate stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) treatments and to compare treatment parameters in both situations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-seven prostate SBRT patients were employed in this study. A Foley catheter was employed in nine of them, and a guide-wire was employed in the other 28 patients. For each of the 28 patients in which the guide-wire was employed, a comparison between urethral positions in both situations was performed, allowing for a margin

Targeting intracellular Leishmania (L.) infantum with nitazoxanide entrapped into phosphatidylserine-nanoliposomes: An experimental study.

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic neglected tropical disease and result in a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from a single ulceration to a progressive and fatal visceral disease. Comprising a limited and highly toxic therapeutic arsenal, new treatments are urgently needed. Targeting delivery of drugs has been a promising approach for visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Phosphatidylserine-liposomes have demonstrated superior efficacy in VL, targeting intracellular parasites in host cells through macrophage scavenger receptors. In this work, we investigated the in vitro and in vivo effica

Deficiency of PDK1 in osteoclasts delays fracture healing and repair.

Bone fractures are common traumatic injuries of the musculoskeletal system. However, delayed union and non‑union fractures are a major clinical problem that present significant socioeconomic burden to patients and the public health sector. The bone‑resorbing osteoclasts and bone‑forming osteoblasts serve important roles in the fracture repair/healing process. Osteoclast deficiency or decreased osteoblast activity negatively impacts fracture healing. We previously demonstrated that the specific deletion of the serine/threonine kinase 3‑phosphoinositide‑dependent protein kinase 1 (PDK1) in osteo

Long-term effect of TNF inhibitors on radiographic progression in ankylosing spondylitis is associated with time-averaged CRP levels.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the impact of long-term treatment (>3 years) with TNF inhibitors (TNFi) on radiographic progression in AS is associated with the level of acute phase reactants during therapy. METHODS: One hundred and one consecutive AS patients under TNFi [65 men; age: 41.6±11 years (mean±SD), with symptom duration: 17±10 years] were included in this retrospective study. Lateral X-rays of cervical and lumbar spine, obtained before TNFi initiation, were compared to those obtained after a period of 7±2.5 (range: 3-15) years. The levels of CRP and ESR were evaluated every 6 mon

[Multiple insufficiency fractures (metatarsial, calcaneal and sacral) as the first manifestation of lung adenocarcinoma. A case report and literature review].

Insufficiency fractures, or pathological fractures, are produced after minimal trauma or no prior trauma and normally affect weakened bone. Their presence should be suspected in fractures showing abnormal patterns, when several fractures occur in a short period of time and in those with no apparent or only minimal trauma. On confirmation of an insufficiency fracture, a differential diagnosis should be made between tumoral and metastatic fractures if there is a history of underlying primary malignancy. The epidemiology of lung cancer has changed due to women's adoption of smoking. In women, the

Therapeutic Effect of Ecdysterone Combine Paeonol Oral Cavity Direct Administered on Radiation-Induced Oral Mucositis in Rats.

Radiation-induced oral mucositis represents an influential factor in cancer patients' accepted radiation therapy, especially in head and neck cancer. This research investigates the treatment effect of Ecdysterone (a steroid derived from the dry root of Achyranthes bidentate) and Paeonol (a compound derived from Cortex Moutan) on radiation-induced oral mucositis and possible underlying mechanisms. Concisely, 20 Gy of X-rays (single-dose) irradiated the cranial localization in rats for the modeling of oral mucositis. The therapeutic effects of Ecdysterone-Paeonol oral cavity directly administere

Percutaneous vertebroplasty is safe and effective for cancer-related vertebral compression fractures.

INTRODUCTION: In cancer patients with painful vertebral fractures due to spinal metastasis, traditional pain-relieving therapies include analgesics, bed rest, steroids, radio-ther-apy, etc. These treatment modalities are often ineffective. Traditional spinal surgery in general anaesthesia is usually not an option in patients with advanced cancer and in a poor general condition. Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) has been reported as a minimally invasive treatment option with apparent rapid pain relief compared with other conventional treatment options. The objective of this study was to assess

Biomarkers for Radiation Pneumonitis Using Noninvasive Molecular Imaging.

UNLABELLED: Our goal is to develop minimally invasive biomarkers for predicting radiation-induced lung injury before symptoms develop. Currently, there are no biomarkers that can predict radiation pneumonitis. Radiation damage to the whole lung is a serious risk in nuclear accidents or in radiologic terrorism. Our previous studies have shown that a single dose of 15 Gy of x-rays to the thorax causes severe pneumonitis in rats by 6-8 wk. We have also developed a mitigator for radiation pneumonitis and fibrosis that can be started as late as 5 wk after radiation. METHODS: We used 2 functional S

[Locking plate osteosynthesis of the radial head fractures : clinical and radiological results].

BACKGROUND: Therapy of radial head fractures is still controversially discussed. Especially comminuted fractures are at risk of complications such as radial head necrosis, nonunion and secondary loss of reduction after open reduction and internal fixation. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinical and radiographic results of ORIF (open reduction internal fixation) of radial head fractures using a new radial head-specific locking plate system. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 21 patients (13 men and 8 women) were treated with locking plate osteosynthesis of radial head fractures. Mean age

Neonatal medical exposures and characteristics of low birth weight hepatoblastoma cases: a report from the Children's Oncology Group.

BACKGROUND: Hepatoblastoma is a malignancy of young children. Low birth weight is associated with significantly increased risk of hepatoblastoma and neonatal medical exposures are hypothesized as contributors. This study represents the largest case-control study of hepatoblastoma to date and aimed to define the role of neonatal exposures in hepatoblastoma risk among low birth weight children. PROCEDURE: Incident hepatoblastoma cases who were born <2,500 g (N = 60), diagnosed between 2000 and 2008, were identified through the Children's Oncology Group. Controls were recruited through state bir

Effects of idursulfase enzyme replacement therapy for Mucopolysaccharidosis type II when started in early infancy: comparison in two siblings.

Mucopolysaccharidosis type II (MPS II) is a lysosomal storage disorder that is progressive and involves multiple organs and tissues. While enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) with idursulfase has been shown to improve many somatic features of the disease, some such as dysostosis multiplex and cardiac valve disease appear irreversible once established, and little is known about the preventative effects of ERT in pre-symptomatic patients. We report on two siblings with severe MPS II caused by an inversion mutation with recombination breakpoints located within the IDS gene and its adjacent pseudogen
