Behaviour of arm venous pressure in patients with systodiastolic hypertension and in the elderly with isolated systolic hypertension in comparison with healthy controls.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the behaviour of venous pressure in patients with systodiastolic arterial hypertension as compared with elderly patients suffering from isolated systolic hypertension and with healthy controls. We studied 125 subjects subdivided into three groups: Group A, formed by 32 patients, aged between 43 and 73 years, with a mean age of 63.25+/-12.3 years, suffering from mild to moderate systodiastolic essential arterial hypertension (SDH); Group B, including 50 patients, aged between 58 and 83 years, with a mean age of 71.53+/-8.43 years, with isolated systolic hype

Concomitant risk factors in hypertensives: a survey of risk factors for cardiovascular disease amongst hypertensives in English general practices.

AIMS: To determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors among hypertensives in a cross-sectional survey of hypertensives from 13 general practices in England. FINDINGS: Of 1,948 European hypertensives (systolic blood pressure 150 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure > 90 mmHg and/or on treatment for hypertension), 40 to 69 years of age, 53.3% on treatment had controlled blood pressures (systolic blood pressure < 160 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure < 95 mmHg). Electrocardiographic abnormalities and other cardiovascular risk factors were common among these hypertensives, with dyslipi

Immunohistochemical findings of juxtaglomerular cells on acute phase in two-kidney Goldblatt hypertensive rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Juxtaglomerular (JG) cells on the acute phase in two-kidney Goldblatt hypertensive (2KGH) rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were examined immunohistochemically. JG cells in 2KGH rats and SHR were positively stained with anti-renin serum and anti-angiotensin II (A II) serum. In 2KGH rats, the number of renin and AII immunoreactive JG cells in the clipped kidneys increased throughout the observation period. The number of renin and AII immunoreactive JG cells in the unclipped kidneys was almost the same as that in control rats, although immunoreactivity of these cells was weak and th

Characterisation of neutral endopeptidase 3.4.24.11 (NEP) in the kidney: comparison between normotensive, genetically hypertensive and experimentally hypertensive rats.

Neutral endopeptidase 3.4.24.11 (NEP) has been identified as the major atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) degrading enzyme in rat kidney, therefore, suggesting a possible role for this enzyme in blood volume and pressure regulation. Various experimentally induced and genetically hypertensive rat models have been used to test NEP inhibitors. The presence of different isoforms of NEP in the various hypertensive rat models would have relevance when searching for novel NEP inhibitors. Therefore, we compared the properties of NEP in kidney cortex homogenates in order to test for possible differences i

The survival of treated hypertensive patients and their causes of death: a report from the DHSS hypertensive care computing project (DHCCP).

A prospective study has been carried out to determine the causes of death and risk factors for survival in 4994 patients referred with a diagnosis of hypertension to hospital specialist clinics and 457 patients treated by their general practitioners for this condition. At the time of entering the prospective study, 69% of the patients were already being treated for hypertension. Four hundred and eleven patients have died, and their causes of death and death rates have been compared with the rates for the population of England and Wales. Ischaemic heart disease accounted for over one-third of t

Heymann nephritis-DOCA-NaCl hypertension in the rat. Role of nephritis, DOCA, NaCl, and vascular lesions in the development of hypertension.

In order to explore the impact of nephritis on the development of hypertension, rats with Heymann nephritis were given 0.9% NaCl to drink, in combination with or without DOCA injections, for up to 6 months. Combined nephritis-DOCA-NaCl resulted in severe hypertension and shortened life span, whereas nephritis-NaCl combination failed to induce hypertension or shorten life span. All immunized rats developed membranous glomerulonephritis but creatinine clearance did not decrease. DOCA-NaCl-treated nephritic rats had a heavier proteinuria and more marked renal lesions than NaCl-treated nephritis r

Induction of diverse arterial and myocardial lesions by adrenal regeneration hypertension in Sprague-Dawley versus spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Nonarteriosclerotic, virgin, Sprague-Dawley (SD), and spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) rats and arterio sclerotic breeder SD and SHR rats were subjected to adrenal regeneration-induced hypertension (ARH) with and without extra salt. ARH caused a marked increase in the blood pressure of SD rats and a mild increase in SHR rats; extra salt caused exacerbation of hypertension in SD rats only. Heart and kidney weights were greatly increased commensurate with blood pressure. Increased adrenal weight concomitant with thymus gland involution was considerable in SD and less marked in SHR rats. Hidden Burden of Hypertension in Türkiye: A Multi-Center DAHUDER World Hypertension Day Study Reveals Gaps in Awareness, Adherence, and Control.

Background: Hypertension remains the single most important modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, and premature mortality worldwide. Despite major pharmacological advances, awareness, treatment, and control rates remain globally inadequate, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. Türkiye occupies a unique epidemiological position at the intersection of European and Asian cardiovascular risk patterns, with national surveys documenting a stable hypertension prevalence of approximately 30% but persistent deficits in disease control. Methods: This cross-sectional study

Long-Term Outcome of Pulmonary Artery Hypertension-Specific Therapy in Patients With Portopulmonary Hypertension: A Multi-Institutional Database Case Series Study.

Portopulmonary hypertension (PoPH) is a subtype of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) associated with portal hypertension, occurring in 2%-6% of cirrhotic patients. Although guidelines recommend routine echocardiography before transplantation, the prevalence, and outcomes of PAH-specific therapy in cirrhotic patients remain unclear. We retrospectively analyzed 4,113 cirrhotic patients who underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) between 2008 and 2019 using the Chang Gung Research Database. Patient characteristics, medication, echocardiographic findings, right heart catheterization (RH

An unexpected therapeutic overlap: long-term control of KCNK3-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension during treatment of systemic hypertension-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a progressive disorder characterized by obliterative pulmonary vascular remodelling. Pathogenic variants in KCNK3 represent a recognized cause of heritable PAH (hPAH). Loss-of-function mutations lead to membrane depolarization, increased calcium influx, and enhanced pulmonary vasoconstriction. Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are recommended for patients demonstrating a positive acute vasoreactivity test. CASE SUMMARY: A 50-year-old man carrying a pathogenic KCNK3 (E34K) mutation was referred to a tertiary PAH centre during familial screenin

Beliefs about medications when treating hypertension in primary health care: results from "PERson-centredness in hypertension management using information Technology (PERHIT)".

PURPOSE: Hypertension is a major global health concern. Despite of efficient antihypertensive medications a low percentage of patients reach a blood pressure (BP) of <140/90. Nonadherence is a great concern in hypertension treatment and patients' beliefs about medications has been shown to have a strong impact on adherence. The objective of this study is to examine beliefs about medications and its impact on BP treatment in a group of Swedish primary healthcare patients treated for hypertension with or without an E-health platform. Associated factors of early-onset pulmonary hypertension and clinical difference between early- and late-onset pulmonary hypertension in Thai systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a major cause of death in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Detection of early-onset PH and its associated factors would be helpful for improving patient care. Our aims were to determine the factors associated with early-onset PH and to define the differences between early- and late-onset PH among SSc patients. METHODS: A cohort study was conducted of 409 adult SSc patients who had followed-up between January 2014 and December 2016. Early-PH is defined when the onset of PH is diagnosed within 5 years of the disease. Logistic regression analysis was applied t

CTA-derived left to right atrial size ratio distinguishes between pulmonary hypertension due to heart failure and idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Assessing atrial sizes by routine non-gated CT-angiography (CTA) could be of value in discriminating between pulmonary hypertension (PH) due to heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH). We aimed to determine how left (LA) and right atrial (RA) sizes on non-gated CTA can help discriminate between these patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: In an initial study, CMR was used in 15 IPAH and 15 PH-HFpEF patients to determine LA- and RA size throughout the cardiac cycle. While significant variations were noted in LA
