AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To present a 5 years experience on the pattern and outcome of emergency operations in a new teaching hospital.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study carried out between April 1998 and March 2003 with appropriate data extracted from the available case notes.
RESULTS: Two thousand and seventy operations were performed within the period of study. Seven hundred and twenty six of them were done as emergency. PURPOSE: This study of patients who were hospitalized with pneumonia describes 4 short-term outcomes and the relative value of 4 variables for predicting the outcomes.
METHOD: We prospectively documented 4 short-term outcomes (hospital length of stay, discharge location, death, 30-day readmission) among 213 adults (mean age = 72.5 years) with pneumonia who were admitted to the hospital. OBJECTIVE: To establish the annual incidence, and cost of treating, symptomatic salivary stones and sialoadenitis.

Fifty-three patients, 34 adults and 19 children have been implanted over the first five years of the cochlear implant programmed at the North Riding Infirmary (NRI). For a small centre, based at a district general hospital, our complication rate compare favourably with others: 11.7 per cent adult and 10.5 per cent paediatric major complications. An investigation was conducted in a community hospital to determine whether physician specialty (obstetrics vs family medicine) is a risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes. Data are presented on all 569 subjects who, as a result of trauma, either died or were admitted to hospital in Auckland over a four week period. Median age was 23 with an overall 3:2 male:female ratio. Median injury severity score (ISS) was five with 9% of subjects having an ISS of 16 or more (major trauma). RATIONALE: Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone influence seizure thresholds resulting in catamenial epilepsy in a subset of women with epilepsy. While prior studies assessing the correlation between menarche and seizure onset have found mixed results, little is known about the effects of puberty on seizure burden in patients with developmental and epileptic encephalopathies, such as Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Determining whether seizure burden in LGS is affected by pubertal changes such as menarche will inform prognosis and anticipatory guidance for caregivers of patients.
