The treatment of depressive disorders in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Depressive disorders are among the more common mental illnesses around the world. About 3% of prepubertal children and 6% of postpubertal children and adolescents are affected. Many physicians are unsure about which treatment approaches are effective and how the treatment should be planned. METHOD: A systematic literature search was carried out in electronic databases and study registries and as a manual search. More than 450 studies (mostly randomized controlled trials [RCTs]) were identified and summarized in five evidence tables. The ensuing recommendations were agreed upon in

The relative importance of predictors of body mass index change, overweight and obesity in adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative importance of familial, dietary, behavioral, psychological and social risk factors for predicting body mass index (BMI) change, and onset of overweight and obesity among adolescent girls. METHODS: Data from the NHLBI Growth and Health Study (n = 2 150), a longitudinal cohort of girls, were used to identify the most important predictors of change in BMI percentile between the ages of 9 and 19 years, and second, risk for becoming overweight and obese. Forty-one baseline predictors were assessed using a tree-based regression method (Random forest) to rank the

The validity of self-reported condom use among adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Research and public health interventions designed to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) often are based on self-reported condom use. Yet, validation of self-reported condom use, in particular with adolescents, has rarely been described in the literature. METHODS: Baseline data were obtained from 540 adolescents, 13-21 years of age, enrolled in a 1-year longitudinal study of health beliefs, sexual behaviors, and STD acquisition. Of the 445 participants reporting to be sexually active, 404 (90.8%) agreed to a complete physical examination, including a genital ex

Smartphone addiction, physical activity engagement, and sleep quality in Chinese adolescents: a parallel and serial mediation model.

INTRODUCTION: Excessive smartphone use has become a major public health concern among adolescents, particularly in China where smartphone use is widespread. Although smartphone addiction is consistently associated with poor sleep quality, the mechanisms underlying this association remain insufficiently understood. This study examined whether physical activity engagement and depressive symptoms operate as parallel and serial mediators linking smartphone addiction to sleep quality in Chinese adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 612 adolescents (Mage = 14.2 years, S

A Latent Profile Analysis of Latino Adolescents' Cultural Wealth, Ethnic-Racial Discrimination, and Academic Adjustment.

Drawing from the model of community cultural wealth, which suggests that youth from minoritized populations can draw on their cultural knowledge, networks, and skills to successfully navigate their academic contexts, the current study examined whether latent profiles of cultural capital emerged among a sample of Latino adolescents using various indicators of cultural wealth. The sample included 627 Latino adolescents (95% U.S.-born; 57% girls; 33% 9th graders, 27% 10th graders, 23% 11th graders, 18% 12th graders). Specifically, configurations of cultural wealth were analyzed based on the follo

Family structure, adolescent mental health, and the role of advisors in the cultural and social context of South Korea.

Prior research consistently reports differences in mental health outcomes among adolescents between intact and non-intact families, highlighting the need to address these disparities. This study aims to investigate the moderating effect of advisers (counselors, teachers, or friends) on the mental health of adolescents from non-intact families. We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the 2017 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey, a large, representative nationwide sample of adolescents. We included 61,572 middle and high school students living with at least one parent, catego

Digital distraction and adolescent development: a narrative review of smartphone use, cognitive effects, and policy interventions.

Smartphone use has become nearly universal among adolescents, raising concerns about its potential effects on attention, well-being, and learning. Over the past decade, rapid growth in smartphone ownership and social media engagement among youth has prompted increasing interest in how digital technologies influence cognitive and psychological development. At the same time, schools and youth organizations have begun implementing policies that restrict smartphone use in an effort to reduce distraction and improve student engagement. Despite these efforts, the broader impacts of smartphone use an

Associations between suicidal ideation and childhood maltreatment as well as inflammatory cytokines in adolescents with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation (SI) is thought to be associated with childhood maltreatment (CM) and inflammatory processes. Yet, these links are not thoroughly studied in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD). So, this study focused on investigating the predictive value of CM and inflammatory cytokines for SI in this population. METHODS: This study included 156 depressed adolescents. The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and the Positive and Negative Suicidal Ideation Scale (PANSI) were used to assess depression, C

Prevalence of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders Among Adolescents Experiencing Homelessness: A Systematic Review.

Adolescents with existing mental health and substance use disorders are at higher risk for homelessness, and being homeless can further exacerbate these issues. However, no systematic review has specifically assessed the prevalence of mental health and substance use disorders among homeless adolescents using validated diagnostic measures. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of mental health and substance use disorders among adolescents experiencing homelessness, based on studies employing validated diagnostic measures. A systematic search was conducted across electronic

Intimacy-driven conformity: A between- and within-person perspective on friendship quality and adolescent susceptibility to peer norms about alcohol.

BACKGROUND: Friendships become increasingly influential in early adolescence, leading to a greater impact of friends' norms on behavior. However, not all youth conform to norms, suggesting other factors may shape this influence. One such factor is friendship quality, which may shape adolescents' motivation to adopt peer norms, especially when those norms come from close, supportive friendships. This study examined how perceptions of friends' alcohol use and approval predict adolescents' intentions to drink, and whether friendship quality moderates these effects while disaggregating between- an

Treatment of medication-overuse headache in children and adolescents: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effectiveness of treatment strategies for medication-overuse headache (MOH) in children and adolescents. BACKGROUND: There are no guidelines for the treatment of adult or pediatric patients with MOH. However, research pertaining to MOH in adults is far outpacing research in children and adolescents. METHODS: A systematic review of evidence on treatment for MOH in children and adolescents was performed via PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Cochrane from database inception to October 2024 for articles with the subject headings and keywords for MOH and pedi

Research Review: Sex differences in the clinical correlates of nonsuicidal self-injury in adolescents - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), or 'the deliberate, self-inflicted destruction of body tissue…without suicidal intent and for purposes not culturally sanctioned', is a robust predictor of future suicide-related behavior and therefore a modifiable target for suicide prevention. The prevalence of NSSI is rising in adolescents, particularly among females; however, it is unknown whether sex differences also exist in the clinical and psychosocial factors associated with NSSI. Understanding how the correlates of NSSI differ by sex is important for developing tailored treatments. This stu

The relationship between food addiction, eating attitudes, and psychiatric symptoms with metabolic control in adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic control is of critical importance in children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) for the stabilization of blood glucose levels and long-term health outcomes. Dietary choices play an important role in glucose control and the prevention of diabetes-related complications. This study aims to investigate the relationship between food addiction, eating attitudes, and psychiatric symptoms with metabolic control in adolescents diagnosed with T1DM. METHODS: Participants (N = 100) were assessed using the Yale Food Addiction Scale (Y-FAS), Eating Attitudes Test-40 (EAT-40), and B

Adolescent-Initiated Retrospective Glucose Data Review is Associated With Improved Glycemia in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

Objectives: Regular retrospective review of glucose data is an important aspect of type 1 diabetes (T1D) management. Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) facilitate retrospective review by capturing glucose data and generating standardized reports. However, only a minority of adults with T1D retrospectively review their glucose data, and adolescents are understudied. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of self-reported retrospective glucose data review by adolescents with T1D, determine factors associated with self-reported retrospective glucose data review, and assess

Diverging Effects of Adolescent Ethanol Exposure on Tripartite Synaptic Development across Prefrontal Cortex Subregions.

Adolescence is a developmental period that encompasses, but is not limited to, puberty and continues into early adulthood. During this period, maturation and refinement are observed across brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex (PFC), which is critical for cognitive function. Adolescence is also a time when excessive alcohol consumption in the form of binge drinking peaks, increasing the risk of long-term cognitive deficits and the risk of developing an alcohol use disorder later in life. Animal models have revealed that adolescent ethanol (EtOH) exposure results in protracted disruption

Using Latent Class Analysis to Identify Health Lifestyle Profiles and Their Association with Suicidality among Adolescents in Benin.

Youth suicidality is considerably prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, including Benin. Factors such as psychosocial distress, socio-environmental factors, and health risk behaviors are associated with suicidality. However, little is known about how these factors co-occur in these countries. An analysis of these factors taken together would help to identify the profiles most at risk and better target prevention policies. Our study aimed to identify profiles related to these factors and their association with suicidality among adolescents in Benin. Data from the 2016 Global School-Bas
