Fatty acid amide hydrolase in comorbid borderline personality disorder and major depressive disorder: Imaging with [11C]CURB PET.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is highly comorbid with major depressive disorder (MDD), and the comorbid condition is associated with poorer treatment outcomes, which necessitates the investigation of transdiagnostic biomarkers. Previous research suggests that fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), an endocannabinoid enzyme, is elevated in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in BPD; however, no study has examined FAAH density in individuals with comorbid conditions. We hypothesized that FAAH level would be elevated in the prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex and hippocampus of comorbid BPD

Time of Day Matters: An Exploratory Assessment of Chronotype in a Forensic Psychiatric Hospital.

A growing body of evidence links the late chronotype to mental illness, aggression, and aversive personality traits. However, much of what we know about these associations is based on healthy cohorts, and it is unclear how individuals with high levels of aggression, including forensic psychiatric populations, but not offenders, are affected. The present study aimed to measure chronotype in a forensic psychiatric inpatient population, evaluate the impact of diagnosis, and identify any interactive relationships between chronotype, diagnosis, aggression, and dark triad traits. Subjects completed

Brain structural correlates of irritability: Findings in a large healthy cohort.

Irritability and nonviolent aggression are common behavioral features across the population, yet there is limited neurobiological research into subclinical phenotypes representing the lower edge of a symptom continuum ranging from slight irritability to criminal violence. We studied brain structural correlates of irritability in a large healthy cohort to test the hypothesis of associations with fronto-limbic brain structures implicated in mood regulation. In a large multicenter effort, we recruited 409 mentally healthy adults from the community, who received T1-weighted high-resolution 3 T MRI

Gender, personality, and serotonin-2A receptor binding in healthy subjects.

The vulnerability to mood disorders, impulsive-aggression, eating disorders, and suicidal behavior varies greatly with gender, and may reflect gender differences in central serotonergic function. We investigated the relationships of gender, mood, impulsivity, aggression and temperament to 5HT(2A) receptor binding in 21 healthy subjects using [18F]altanserin and PET neuroimaging. Binding potentials in pre-defined regions-of-interest (ROI) were calculated using the Logan graphical method, corrected for partial volume effects, and compared by gender with age co-varied. SPM analysis was used for v

Predicting Sexual Assault Perpetration Among Heterosexually Active Young Men.

Data from an online community sample of young men were analyzed to test predictors of sexual assault perpetration. We used structural equation modeling to test the relative contributions of specific sub-types of childhood adversity to subsequent sexual aggression. Mediators included hostile masculinity, impersonal sexual behavior and attitudes, and substance use variables. Findings suggested that childhood sexual abuse had direct and mediated effects on sexual assault perpetration, but hostile masculinity was the only proximal factor significantly related to aggression. Childhood polytrauma wa

Examining the Role of Antisocial Personality Disorder in Intimate Partner Violence Among Substance Use Disorder Treatment Seekers With Clinically Significant Trauma Histories.

This study examined the associations among posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom severity, antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) diagnosis, and intimate partner violence (IPV) in a sample of 145 substance abuse treatment-seeking men and women with positive trauma histories; sex was examined as a moderator. ASPD diagnosis significantly predicted both verbal and physical aggression; sex moderated the association between ASPD diagnosis and physical violence. PTSD symptom severity significantly predicted engaging in verbal, but not physical, aggression. Overall, these results suggest that

THE OBJECT-PRESERVING FUNCTION OF SADOMASOCHISM.

The terms sadism, masochism, and sadomasochism seem to have become increasingly, if loosely, associated with aggression in psychoanalytic discourse. This is due in part to the fact that Freud's changing ideas generated confusion about the relative contributions of libido and aggression. The author reviews Freud's variable usage and offers a clinical vignette to illustrate the importance of noticing how sadomasochism may maintain a tie to the object by controlling it. The author offers a developmental speculation for the role reversibility typical of sadomasochistic manifestations. He closes wi

Student teachers' observations of unfavorable teacher behaviors exhibited in classrooms.

The aim of this study was to identify male and female teachers' misbehaviors in classrooms and determine the variance of those misbehaviors in schools in different socioeconomic areas. The study was conducted in 24 primary schools in Erzurum province with a total of 210 classroom teachers. Data were obtained through observations made by 210 student teachers. The data collected were analysed through descriptive analyses by the researcher. 661 misbehaviors were observed and classified into six different categories, namely, physical aggression, passive (verbal) aggression, constant nervousness, t

Homicide by heart attack?

We report here the case of a 53-year-old man who suddenly fell to the ground after being involved in a physical aggression by two younger men. Forensic autopsy revealed no significant injury except for slight, pale abrasions on the face. There were extensive signs of hypertensive and severe coronary artery atherosclerosis, corresponding to the data available from clinical history. The cause of death was established as acute myocardial ischemia due to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, probably related to the physical and/or emotional stress due to the aggression. We discu

The role of substance use in male-to-female physical and sexual violence: a brief review and recommendations for future research.

Literature addressing the relationship between substance use and physical and sexual violence against women is reviewed briefly. There is substantial evidence of a relationship between men's substance use and perpetration of physical violence, some evidence of a relationship between women's substance use and experiences of sexual aggression, but weak evidence that men's substance use contributes to sexual aggression or that women's substance use contributes to their physical victimization. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the relationship between substance use and violence relationship

Predicting the Use of Sexually Coercive Strategies in Young Heterosexual Men: Combining the Dual Control Model with the Confluence Model.

Sexual aggression is a widespread problem that despite increased prevention efforts remains highly prevalent. Although research has focused on a myriad of predictors of sexual aggression perpetration, basic sexual processes, related to sexual motivation and response, have as yet not been studied extensively. The current study examined the value of combining factors from two theoretical models that have been associated with sexual aggression perpetration, the confluence model and the dual control model of sexual response. A total of 619 heterosexual men (M age = 22.50 years, SD = 3.40) complete

Androgen receptor deficiency is associated with reduced aromatase expression in the ventromedial hypothalamus of male cichlids.

Social behaviors are regulated by sex steroid hormones, such as androgens and estrogens. However, the specific molecular and neural processes modulated by steroid hormones to generate social behaviors remain to be elucidated. We investigated whether some actions of androgen signaling in the control of social behavior may occur through the regulation of estradiol synthesis in the highly social cichlid fish, Astatotilapia burtoni. Specifically, we examined the expression of cyp19a1, a brain-specific aromatase, in the brains of male A. burtoni lacking a functional ARα gene (ar1), which was recent

Reseach progress in dual harm.

Growing evidence supports an association between self-harm and aggression, and the two behaviors frequently co-occur. The co-occurrence of self-harm and aggression is termed as dual harm. Existing evidence reveals that rather than a simple co-occurrence of self-harm and aggression, dual-harm may be an independent behavior different from a sole harm behavior. Identification of characteristics and influencing factors for dual harm may help develop effective prevention strategies for the affected population. A review of the literature yields a high incidence of dual harm among the clinical and fo

The Impact of Work Characteristics on Social Distancing: Implications at the Time of COVID-19.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continues to spread globally. While social distancing has attracted attention as a measure to prevent the spread of infection, some occupations find it difficult to implement. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between work characteristics and social distancing using data available on O*NET, an occupational information site. A total of eight factors were extracted by performing an exploratory factor analysis: work conditions, supervisory work, information processing, response to aggression, specialization, autonomy, interaction outside

Change in core symptoms of borderline personality disorder by tDCS: A pilot study.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) recognizes several psychopathological dimensions related to prefrontal cortex impairments. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) targeting the right prefrontal dorsolateral cortex (DLPFC) positively influence cognitive functions related to impulsivity in healthy subjects. A randomized double-blind study was designed to investigate whether tDCS could modulate core dimensions (impulsivity, aggression, affective dysregulation) of BPD. Also effects on decision making process and substances craving was assessed. Patients were randomized to receive acti

The Impact of Motivational Interviewing on Delinquent Behaviors in Incarcerated Adolescents.

The impact of Motivational Interviewing (MI) on risky behaviors of incarcerated adolescents and adults has been investigated with promising results. Findings suggest that MI reduces substance use, improves motivation and confidence to reduce use, and decreases risky behaviors. The current study investigated the impact of MI on general, alcohol-related, and marijuana-related delinquent behaviors in incarcerated adolescents. Participants in the study were incarcerated adolescents in a state correctional facility in the Northeast region and were assessed as part of a larger randomized clinical tr

Relationship management strategies for daughters in conflicted relationships with their ageing mothers.

AIMS: To study relationship management strategies of daughters in conflicted relationships with their mothers and how they promoted or prevented elder abuse. BACKGROUND: Daughters have enduring, unique relationships with their mothers that often carry over into caregiving. Pre-caregiving relationship quality is related to many caregiving outcomes, although it is unclear how. DESIGN: Qualitative study. METHODS: Grounded theory design, informed by feminism, with telephone interviews conducted between January 2013-July 2013. The sample (N = 13) was recruited through an online recruitment strat

Tau phosphorylation in human brain: relationship to behavioral disturbance in dementia.

Agitation and aggressive behavior are common symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (AD), and tangle density in frontal cortex is a possible regional substrate of these behaviors. To investigate this further, 16 AD patients, 8 patients with non-AD dementia, and 13 age-matched control subjects for frontal cortex and, respectively, 21, 7, and 6 patients for parietal cortex were analyzed for tau and phospho-tau by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Agitation/aggression was determined by the Present Behavioural Examination. In a subset of cases, glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) phosphorylatio

Management of agitation following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: is there a role for Beta-blockers?

Introduction. Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States. About 20% of the stroke is hemorrhagic and about 50% of these is due to aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. A troublesome neuropsychiatric complication of subarachnoid hemorrhage is agitation/aggression. Case Presentation. A 45-year-old man with no prior psychiatric history, sustained subarachnoid hemorrhage. After initial stabilization for 2 days, he underwent craniotomy and clipping of anterior cerebral communicating artery aneurysm. Treatment was continued with labetalol, nimodipine, and levetiracetam.
