Pollutants regulate changes in pathological markers of neurodegenerative diseases: a new perspective in environmental toxicology.

Neurodegenerative diseases are major global health challenges, with their pathogenesis closely linked to the abnormal aggregation of pathological proteins. Beyond genetic factors, environmental pollutants play key roles in disease onset and progression. Conventional reviews often focus on associations between specific pollutants and particular diseases. This review innovatively concentrates on the common pathogenic mechanisms of core pathological markers (e.g., Aβ, Tau, α-syn, TDP-43), systematically detailing how various pollutants, including air pollutants, metals, and persistent organic pol

Environmental and household factors associated with depressive symptoms in rural Kilifi County, Kenya: a machine learning analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a leading global cause of disability, that disproportionately affects populations in low-resource settings in sub-Saharan Africa, where poverty, limited healthcare, and environmental stressors such as climate variability, poor water and sanitation, and household air pollution compound vulnerability. In Kilifi County, Kenya, recurrent droughts and economic insecurity amplify these challenges, yet the associations between environmental exposures and mental health impacts remain poorly characterized. This study applies machine learning models to examine how climate perce

Epidermal growth factor receptor dysregulation and climate change: insights into pollution-promoted lung cancer.

The global increase of fine particulate matter pollution, intensified by anthropogenic activity, has been increasingly implicated in lung cancer risk, particularly among never-smokers. We discuss how air pollution contributes to respiratory diseases through interactions with the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signalling pathway. In particular, recent evidence has shown that fine particulate matter promotes lung cancer in cells harbouring a pre-existing EGFR mutation. As such, we also outline how oncogenic mutations in histologically normal tissue may predispose cells to malignant tran

A study of volatile organic sulfur emissions causing urban odors.

Levels of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur containing organic compounds were studied in the air at the deltas of the polluted creeks in the city of Izmir, Turkey in summer 2001. High concentrations of these malodorous compounds were measured in the air samples. Presence of these compounds in the air was connected with the dark appearance and rising gas bubbles in the studied segments of the creeks. These creeks were like open sewers carrying wastewaters from the industry and residential areas into the inner Izmir Bay until September 2001. Within the scope of this study organic sulfur compounds such

[Impact of climate change and pollution on the global health of older adults].

Climate change and pollution are major public health challenges, with older adults particularly at risk due to frailty, multimorbidity, social isolation, and economic vulnerability. From a global health perspective, in which human health is closely linked to surrounding fauna, flora, and the broader environment, environmental exposures are key determinants of healthy ageing. We conducted a narrative review (2000-2025) based on PubMed, Google Scholar, and institutional reports (World Health Organization, IPCC, Inserm). The review focused on adults aged ≥ 60 years and the health impacts associat

Innovative methodologies for elucidating bushfire smoke-induced pathophysiological mechanism.

Over the last century, the awareness of air pollution awareness and its harm to public health have resulted in the implementation of new protective measures to try and limit exposure. Bushfires generate waves of air pollution with orders of magnitudes higher than normal background pollution, necessitating studies to understand the physiological impact. Previous work has strongly linked bushfire smoke to respiratory disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD, asthma, lung cancer) cardiovascular disease (myocardial infarction, stroke), and increased susceptibility to infection (COVID-19

Efficacy of a topical serum containing L-ascorbic acid, neohesperidin, pycnogenol, tocopherol, and hyaluronic acid in relation to skin aging signs.

BACKGROUND: Skin aging is a process regulated by chronological aging and amplified by exposome factors including chronic UV exposure and pollution, which both induce reactive oxygen species. Topical antioxidants have the potential to counteract this process and to improve skin aging signs, including wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of a topical antioxidant serum containing 15% L-ascorbic acid, neohesperidin, Pinus pinaster bark, tocopherol, and hyaluronic acid (HA) ex vivo on air pollution-induced pigmentation and gene expression, as well as in vivo on skin

The Influence of Meteorological Factors and Atmospheric Pollutants on the Risk of Preterm Birth.

Atmospheric pollutants and meteorological conditions are suspected to be causes of preterm birth. We aimed to characterize their possible association with the risk of preterm birth (defined as birth occurring before 37 completed gestational weeks). We pooled individual data from 13 birth cohorts in 11 European countries (71,493 births from the period 1994-2011, European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE)). City-specific meteorological data from routine monitors were averaged over time windows spanning from 1 week to the whole pregnancy. Atmospheric pollution measurements (nitr

How Are We Exposed to Chemicals When Drugs Are Smoked Indoors?

Indoor smoking of psychoactive substances exposes not only users through "firsthand smoke" (FHS) but also bystanders through pathways of "secondhand smoke" (SHS; exhaled or side-stream smoke) and "thirdhand smoke" (THS; residual contamination that persists indoors) via different routes of inhalation, mouthing-mediated ingestion, and dermal absorption. Here, we explore how chemical properties, smoking behaviors, and features of exposed individuals together shape exposure pathways and routes, using a mechanistic indoor chemical fate and exposure model with scenarios varying by retention rate (th

Photodegradation of xylene isomers: Kinetics, mechanism, secondary pollutant formation potential and health risk evaluation.

Photodegradation technology has been widely applied in the purification of industrial aromatic hydrocarbons. However, whether this technology efficiently removes the pollutants to prevent secondary pollution and health risk is still unclear. Here, the photodegradation processes of three xylenes were compared under designed reaction atmospheres and light sources. Xe lamp showed poor photodegradation ability toward xylenes, no matter in N2 or N2+O2 system, while much higher photodegradation performance of xylenes were obtained under ultraviolet (UV) and vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) irradiation, espe

Air Quality, Health, and Equity Benefits of Carbon Neutrality and Clean Air Pathways in China.

In the pursuit of carbon neutrality, China's 2060 targets have been largely anchored in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with less emphasis on the consequential benefits for air quality and public health. This study pivots to this critical nexus, exploring how China's carbon neutrality aligns with the World Health Organization's air quality guidelines (WHO AQG) regarding fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure. Coupling a technology-rich integrated assessment model, an emission-concentration response surface model, and exposure and health assessment, we find that decarbonization reduces sul

Assessment of occupational exposure to BTEX compounds at a bus diesel-refueling bay: A case study in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Of increasing concern is pollution by volatile organic compounds, with particular reference to five aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and two isomeric xylenes; BTEX). These pollutants are classified as hazardous air pollutants. Due to the potential health risks associated with these pollutants, BTEX concentrations were monitored at a bus diesel-refueling bay, in Johannesburg, South Africa, using gas chromatography, coupled with a photo-ionization detector. Results indicate that o-xylene (29-50%) and benzene (13-33%) were found to be the most abundant species of total BTEX

Poisons in the air: a cause of chronic disease in children.

Children represent the largest subpopulation of those susceptible to the adverse effects of air pollution. Compared to adults, children express a greater vulnerability, which can be explained by differences in: the circumstances of exposure related to age, their activities, their child status, differences in lung anatomy and physiology, differences in the clinical expression of disease, and their organ maturity. Many factors have to be assessed in order to evaluate the severity of toxic exposures: pollutant solubility, particle size, concentration, reactivity of pollutants, and pattern of vent

The Prevalence of Atopic Dermatitis and Food Allergy in Children Living in an Urban Agglomeration-Is There a Current Relationship?

Atopic dermatitis (AD) prevalence in Poland is more frequent in individuals who live in a city. There are more studies demonstrating that long-term exposure to air pollutants is an independent risk factor for developing AD. The aim of the study was to assess the epidemiology of AD and food allergy (FA) in school children and adolescents living in Krakow, and to find a potential relationship between the incidence of atopic dermatitis with exposure to polluted air. In this paper, we presented the incidence of AD and FA between 2014 and 2018. We analyzed data collected from nearly 30,000 children

Predicting the effects of nanoscale cerium additives in diesel fuel on regional-scale air quality.

Diesel vehicles are a major source of air pollutant emissions. Fuel additives containing nanoparticulate cerium (nCe) are currently being used in some diesel vehicles to improve fuel efficiency. These fuel additives also reduce fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions and alter the emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and hydrocarbon (HC) species, including several hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). To predict their net effect on regional air quality, we review the emissions literature and develop a multipollutant inventory for a hypothetical scenario in which nCe additives
