From 1987-2003, 36 patients were treated for talar dislocation, 27 patients for subtalar, six for total talar, and three patients for peritalar dislocation. Luxatio pedis sub talo: We found 19 medial closed, seven lateral closed and one third degree open subtalar dislocations. Our therapeutic concept provides for immediate reduction, which is possible by closed procedure for the majority of medial dislocations. If there is a tendency to redislocation, we perform talonavicular K-wire transfixation. In the case of irreducibility, open reduction via lateral approach is the rule. The lateral dislo

BACKGROUND: Arthropathy is one of the earliest and most common manifestations of hereditary haemochromatosis with a significant impact on quality of life. Although its radiographic features are well known, there is no assessment tool for their evaluation.
OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a novel scoring system for the evaluation of radiographic features of haemochromatosis arthropathy.
METHODS: A dichotomous scoring system assessing four radiographic features of haemochromatosis arthropathy and a 4-grade scale reflecting severity of radiographic change have been developed. Standard radiogr

In contrast with the widely held view that radiologic normal variants are of no clinical significance, many of the anatomic variations of the skeletal system, may, in fact, be responsible for symptoms. Three groups of apparently normal variants are presented: Group 1 consist of ossicle that, from the very onset, may represent the sequelae of repetitious trauma; Group 2 is composed of normal variants in which the presence of congenital synchondrosis may predispose to injury from chronic repetitious trauma; Group 3 consists of ossicles that predispose to local and premature degenerative changes.

Walking in natural environments requires visually guided modifications, which can be more challenging when involving sideways steps rather than longer steps. This exploratory study investigated whether these two types of modifications involve different changes in the central drive to spinal motor neurons of leg muscles. Fifteen adults [age: 36 ± 6 (SD) years] walked on a treadmill (4 km/h) while observing a screen displaying the real-time position of their toes. At the beginning of the swing phase, a visual target appeared in front (forward) or medial-lateral (sideways) of the ground contact i

BACKGROUND: Foot drop causes considerable disability. The ankle-dorsiflexion is either weak or lost completely. Additionally, the ankle eversion and toe extensions are also impaired. This results in a high steppage gait while walking. Overall, the gait is awkward; there is greater energy consumption; increased proneness to sustain injury of the forefoot; and more frequent falling during walking.
AIM: To document the clinical and epidemiological profile of foot drop patients in our population and evaluate the outcome of tibialis posterior (TP) tendon transfer for restoring the lost dorsiflexio

(1) Achilles tendon rupture is one of the most severe lower-limb injuries, frequently occurring during movements involving maximal dorsiflexion with the knee at near-full extension. Preventive strategies are crucial, particularly for athletes engaged in high-risk sports such as basketball. (2) In this work, we examined the effect of a novel Achilles brace on Achilles tendon loading during concentric and eccentric mechanisms associated with tendon rupture. (3) Twenty-eight young basketball players performed tests under two conditions: with the adaptive brace and without it (control). Participan

UNLABELLED: Ankle is the most common site of hardware removal, mainly performed within 12 months of the primary surgery. The prominence of the metallic hardware is a frequent cause of pain after fracture fixation. Over the last decade, the development of bioresorbable materials based on magnesium (Mg) has increased. Bioresorbable metals aim to avoid a second surgery for hardware removal.
METHODS: Twenty patients with isolated, bimalleolar, or trimalleolar ankle fractures were treated with bioresorbable screws made of Mg, 0.45wt% calcium (Ca) and 0.45wt% zinc (Zn) (ZX00). Patient-reported outc

INTRODUCTION: In many reports describing flatfoot deformities, the abnormality is described using observations from physical examination, radiographs, or foot imprints. Correlation of these measurements is often lacking, making determination of the magnitude of the deformity or its surgical correction difficult to quantify.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Weightbearing AP and lateral radiographs were obtained on 25 patients (39 feet) with a clinically apparent flatfoot deformity and an asymptomatic control group of 28 subjects (56 feet). Radiographs were examined for the lateral talometatarsal angle, t

BACKGROUND: Posterior tibial slope (PTS) increases after medial open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO) is challenging for patients. This study aims to determine whether use of a suspended and straightened knee joint position during the fixing of steel plates can prevent an increase in the PTS after OWHTO.
METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed 112 subjects (122 knees) [34 males, 78 females; mean age 59.1 ± 6.6 (range 48-76) years; mean body mass index 28.06 ± 3.61 kg/m2] who underwent OWHTO. A total of 78 knees that were suspended and extended by placing a sterile cloth ball under the

BACKGROUND: Regular physical activity is associated with lower cardiometabolic risk, yet musculoskeletal disorders such as ankle osteoarthritis (OA) may limit activity. This study investigated the association between radiographic ankle OA severity and habitual physical activity quantified using MET-min/week.
METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, consecutive patients evaluated for ankle OA at a tertiary referral foot and ankle clinic (Takakura stage ≥2) between June 2022 and October 2024 were included. Weightbearing ankle radiographs were used to classify OA severity (modified

A multi-function articulated ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) allows independent adjustment of dorsiflexion and plantarflexion range of motion (ROM) and stiffness to optimize gait performance in individuals post-stroke. This study investigated the effects of varying two parameters of an articulated AFO (dorsiflexion ROM and stiffness) on center of pressure (CoP) trajectories, plantar forces, and spatiotemporal parameters during treadmill walking in 10 individuals post-stroke. After individualized tuning of the plantarflexion settings, dorsiflexion ROM was set at 0°, 5°, and 10° using the Triple Actio

Walking patterns can differ between children and adults, both kinematically and kinetically. However, the detailed nature of the ankle pattern has not been clarified. We investigated musculature, biomechanics, and muscle activation strategies and their relevance to walking performance in preschool (PS) and school children (SC), with adults (AD) as reference. Twenty-six PS (3-5 yr), 20 SC (6-8 yr), and 17 AD (18-30 yr) participated. Tibialis anterior (TA) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) thicknesses, fascicle lengths, and maximal voluntary dorsi- and plantar flexion isometric torques were measured

Older adults exhibit declining mobility with age, partly because ankle plantarflexor strength and function, which are crucial for propulsion, are diminished. Exoskeletons hold potential as task-specific resistance training tools that may lead to improved mobility by promoting functional neuromuscular control in addition to strength. Thus, this pilot study assessed the efficacy of an ankle exoskeleton resistance training paradigm on improving plantarflexor strength and mobility among older adults. Eight participants (age: 76 ± 5 years) completed twelve sessions of biofeedback-informed ankle exo

BACKGROUND: Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs) are common ankle injuries, even small OLTs (≤100 mm2) cause pain, swelling, and reduced mobility if untreated, yet an optimal treatment standard remains elusive. This study aimed to compare the midterm outcomes of arthroscopic debridement (AD) and bone marrow stimulation (BMS) techniques for small-sized OLTs and to determine possible association between lesion size and clinical efficacy.
METHODS: Patients with small-sized OLTs who received AD or BMS were retrospectively analyzed, with a minimum follow-up of 36 months. A 1:1 propensity scor

Total ankle replacement (TAR) is a treatment for end stage ankle arthritis. Patient specific instrumentation (PSI) has been used and shown to allow for accurate placement and alignment in TAR in the coronal and sagittal plane. PSI systems are available and use different anatomic landmarks for the cutting guides. This is a retrospective matched case control study comparing accuracy in alignment using 2 different PSI systems. The case series uses a medial malleolar landmark (MM Group), and each case patient was matched based on preoperative coronal plane alignment with 2 ankles in the control se
