Presence of eating disorders and its relationship to anxiety and depression in pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: women who have inadequate nutrient intake are more likely to develop a risky pregnancy. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of eating disorders and its association with anxiety and depression symptomatology in high-risk pregnancies. METHODS: this is a cross-sectional and prospective study conducted at the tertiary university hospital in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. 913 pregnant women waiting for the Obstetrics' outpatient appointment were invited to participate in the study on their 2nd and 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Structured interviews were carried out an

Influence of premorbid BMI on clinical characteristics at presentation of adolescent girls with eating disorders.

BACKGROUND: Considering the prevalence of obesity in society it can be expected that some adolescents with an eating disorder (ED) start weight loss from an overweight and present at a near-normal weight. Presently, the influence of premorbid BMI on clinical characteristics of adolescent girls presenting with an ED has ben studied. METHOD: Premorbid growth charts were available for 275 postmenarcheal adolescent girls presenting with an ED (anorexia nervosa = 27, (subthreshold) bulimia nervosa = 9, restrictive EDNOS = 239). Initial assessment included measurement of weight and length, physical

Increased temporal discounting in bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: There is evidence that people with eating disorders display altered intertemporal choice behavior (the degree of preference for immediate rewards over delayed rewards). Compared to healthy controls (HC), individuals with anorexia nervosa and binge-eating disorder show decreased and increased rates of temporal discounting (TD; the devaluation of delayed rewards), respectively. This is the first study to investigate TD in people with bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: Thirty-nine individuals with BN (2 men) and 53 HC (9 men) completed a hypothetical monetary TD task. Over 80 binary choice

Can Interoception Improve the Pragmatic Search for Biomarkers in Psychiatry?

Disrupted interoception is a prominent feature of the diagnostic classification of several psychiatric disorders. However, progress in understanding the interoceptive basis of these disorders has been incremental, and the application of interoception in clinical treatment is currently limited to panic disorder. To examine the degree to which the scientific community has recognized interoception as a construct of interest, we identified and individually screened all articles published in the English language on interoception and associated root terms in Pubmed, Psychinfo, and ISI Web of Knowled

Psychometric evaluation of self-report measures of binge-eating symptoms and related psychopathology: A systematic review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating is a symptom common to bulimia nervosa, anorexia nervosa (binge/purge subtype), and binge eating disorder. There are many self-report measures available to aid the assessment of eating disorders symptoms, but there has not yet been a systematic review of the literature to identify the most valid and reliable measures for use in assessment and treatment of binge eating. METHOD: A systematic review of the psychometric properties of self-report measures that assess binge eating symptoms and psychopathology was conducted. Two independent raters assessed the psychometric pr

Weight gain in an eating disorders day program.

BACKGROUND: Day treatment programs have increasingly become an important level of care in the medical and psychiatric management of patients with eating disorders, yet there is little in the literature describing the weight gain patterns of patients in these programs. METHODS: Weight gain accomplished by 198 patients admitted to a day program over a 2-year period was studied. Weight gain was analyzed by demographic, diagnostic and program-related variables and was compared for weekdays and weekends. RESULTS: The mean length of stay was 2.6 weeks and patients gained a mean of 2.1 pounds (0.95

Psychosocial morbidities in school going adolescent girls: a study from a South Indian city.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents form about 20-30% of our population. Like the children of any other ages, adolescents have the so called usual problems and problems which are specific for their age and developmental peculiarities. The present study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of the psycho-social problems of adolescent girls and to counsel the girls with problems or those who were problem prone. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study in which 500 adolescent girls from 6 higher secondary schools were selected via a simple random sampling method. A psychiatrist was consulted before the

Development of a Chinese medicine pattern severity index for understanding eating disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders commonly affect young girls and women. Four eating disorders are analyzed in this study: anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), eating disorders not otherwise specified (EDNOS), and binge eating disorder (BED). Eating disorders are a modern concept and as such there is no critically appraised research on how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) conceptualizes of or treats eating disorders. The purpose of this study is to identify and quantify the TCM patterns relevant to eating disorders based on a systematic evaluation of the results of a self-reported quest

Emotional perception in patients with eating disorders in comparison with depressed patients.

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation is a key issue for many psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders, including eating disorders. Eating disordered patients (EDP) show high levels of depressive comorbidity, and there is much uncertainty about disorder-specific deficits. This study is aimed at delineating disorder-specific disturbances of emotional perception in EDP. METHOD: Fifty-two EDP were compared with 35 depressed patients (DP) and 25 healthy controls. They rated their emotional experience when viewing visual emotional stimuli. Emphasis was placed on the patients' perception of their own emotio

Are eating disorders a significant clinical issue in urban India? A survey among psychiatrists in Bangalore.

OBJECTIVE: It is believed that cultural changes such as urbanization and westernization can lead to increasing rates of eating disorders (EDs). A survey was conducted among psychiatrists in Bangalore, India to assess whether they were seeing more cases of ED in the last year. METHOD: Contact details of all psychiatrists in urban Bangalore were obtained from the directory of the local psychiatric society. These psychiatrists were contacted by telephone, email, or in person. A brief proforma was used to record information about the number and nature of eating disorders they had seen in their pr

Position of the American Dietetic Association: nutrition intervention in the treatment of eating disorders.

It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that nutrition intervention, including nutritional counseling by a registered dietitian (RD), is an essential component of team treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and other eating disorders (EDs) during assessment and treatment across the continuum of care. Diagnostic criteria for EDs provide important guidelines for identification and treatment. In addition, individuals may experience disordered eating that extends along a range from food restriction to partial conditions to diagnosed EDs. Understanding the rol

Glucocorticoid receptor gene polymorphisms in Italian patients with eating disorders and obesity.

OBJECTIVE: Glucocorticoids (GCs) are involved in the control of eating behaviors, and it has been proposed that GCs and their receptors (GR) could play a significant role in the pathophysiology of eating disorders (EDs) and obesity. We studied whether genetic variants, such as N363S (rs56149945), exon 9-β (rs6198), ER22/23EK (rs6189-6190), and the intronic BclI restriction site (rs41423247) polymorphisms in the GR gene, could be considered as risk factors for the development of EDs and obesity in Italian patients. METHODS: We investigated the distribution of these single nucleotide polymorphi

Detection of eating disorders in patients: validity and reliability of the French version of the SCOFF questionnaire.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Although eating disorders prevalence is increasing, they are often under diagnosed in cases of unspecific signs of malnutrition. Screening scales may allow earlier diagnosis and nutritional intervention. This study aimed to evaluate the validity of the French version (SCOFF-F) of the SCOFF questionnaire for the detection of eating disorders among a female patient population referred to a clinical nutrition unit. METHODS: After answering the 5 dichotomous questions of the paper version of SCOFF-F, patients were evaluated by one eating disorders specialist blinded to question

[Three cases of erythma ab igne (EAI) in patients with eating disorders].

Erythema ab igne (EAI) is a reticulated pigmented dermatosis, which is caused by repetative and prolonged moderate heat exposure insufficient to produce a burn. We report here three cases of EAI in female patients with eating disorders (two with anorexia nervosa and one with bulimia nervosa) who presented with EAI on the abdomen as well as on the thighs and forearms. The clinical picture was characterized by asymptomatic reticular and macular hyperpigmentation and telangiectases without sequamation. The patients admitted the frequent and sometimes over night use of hot water bottles with the a

Eating disorders: the current status of molecular genetic research.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are complex disorders characterized by disordered eating behavior where the patient's attitude towards weight and shape, as well as their perception of body shape, are disturbed. Formal genetic studies on twins and families suggested a substantial genetic influence for AN and BN. Candidate gene studies have initially focused on the serotonergic and other central neurotransmitter systems and on genes involved in body weight regulation. Hardly any of the positive findings achieved in these studies were unequivocally confirmed or substantiated in met

Increased nitric oxide production in eating disorders.

Animal studies showed that nitric oxide (NO)/cyclic-GMP (cGMP) pathway is involved in the modulation of eating behavior. To address its role in eating disorders (ED), plasma nitrite and cGMP levels were studied in 50 ED patients (25 with Anorexia Nervosa, AN; 25 with Bulimia Nervosa, BN) and 20 sex- and age-matched controls (C). Nitrites (nmol/mg protein, mean+/-S.E.M.: any ED 1.01+/-0.29; AN 1.15+/-0.47; BN 0.88+/-0.36; C 0.25+/-0.07; p<0.01) and cGMP (nmol/ml plasma, mean+/-S.E.M.: any ED 2.58+/-0.60; AN 2.81+/-1.10; BN 2.41+/-0.70; C 0.11+/-0.05; p<0.01) were significantly higher in ED pati

Possible role of preproghrelin gene polymorphisms in susceptibility to bulimia nervosa.

Previous investigations have suggested that ghrelin, an endogenous orexigenic peptide, is involved in the pathology of eating disorders. We conducted a study to determine whether any preproghrelin gene polymorphisms are associated with eating disorders. Three hundred thirty-six eating disorder patients, including 131 anorexia nervosa (AN)-restricting types (AN-R), 97 AN-binge eating/purging types (AN-BP) and 108 bulimia nervosa (BN)-purging types (BN-P), and 300 healthy control subjects participated in the study. Genotyping was performed to determine the polymorphisms present, and with this in

The relationship between perfectionism, eating disorders and athletes: a review.

Perfectionism is a potentially maladaptive personality trait implicated in a number of psychopathologies. As our understanding of the construct perfectionism has shifted from more unidimensionally focused conceptualizations to multidimensional ones, our ability to assess its bearing on various disorders has grown. One particular area in which perfectionism appears to play an important role is among eating disorder patients. The personalities of both those with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) are thought to be intrinsically perfectionistic, which suggests a need to understand the
