In a trial at determining the most relevant immunoglobulin isotype that could reflect success of praziquantel treatment, an ELISA using soluble egg antigen (SEA) was applied on sera of Egyptian patients suffering from active intestinal schistosemiasis without hepatic complications, determining the levels of IgE, IgA, IgM, IgG1, IgG2, IgG3 and IgG4 raised against the SEA, both, pre- and early post-treatment. A confirmed diagnosis of human fascioliasis was rare in Vietnam until 1978 when two cases were reported in humans. Since 1997, we have confirmed 500 cases of human fascioliasis. The majority of cases come from the central provinces of Vietnam: Da Nang, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Khanh Hoa. Patients were treated in hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City. The efficacy of albendazole (ABZ) treatment for human neurocysticercosis (NCC) was assessed by using a monoclonal antibody-based parasite antigen detection ELISA which specifically detects the products of living cysticerci in human serum. Hydatid disease, still frequent in endemic areas, is usually localized in the liver. Despite the benign nature of the disease it is one of the problematic fields of surgery due to the high complication rate and long hospital stay. Based on our experience we recommend evacuation of the cyst and omentoplasty as the surgical method of choice, as it is associated with a relatively low incidence of complications and can be performed easily.
