Laryngocele is generally defined as abnormal dilatations of the laryngeal saccule. Its etiology is not well known but probably caused by congenital and acquired causes. It is uncommon and usually asymptomatic. It may be seen at any age but is most commonly presented at fifth and sixth decades. They are defined as internal, external, and mixed (combined) types according to their relationship with the thyrohyoid membrane. External laryngocele extends upward and protrudes through the thyrohyoid membrane to the neck. Infection of the laryngocele can cause acute symptoms or worsens existing symptom

A case history of a man, who was found to have an asymptomatic lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma with an IgM paraproteinaemia and subsequently acquired HIV infection, is presented. After seroconversion there was a reduction in CD4+ cell count in the peripheral blood and bone marrow, together with an increase in CD 138+ cells in the marrow and disease progression with increasing paraprotein levels and falling haemoglobin. Following antiretroviral therapy (HAART) there was a reduction in viral titres, an increase in peripheral blood CD4+ cell counts together with a reduction in paraprotein and an impro

Herpes zoster (HZ) occurs with an increased incidence in immunosuppressed patients, in whom it frequently displays atypical clinical presentations. Herpetic syringitis, the involvement of the eccrine epithelium by herpes virus infection, is an infrequently described histologic pattern that has been rarely and almost exclusively reported in HIV-infected patients. We report the case of a woman with Burkitt lymphoma who developed 2 nodular, asymptomatic lesions while receiving treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy for her hematological disease. Histology showed viropathic changes in the ep

Cryptosporidium spp. are protozoa which only live in a host cell and may cause an infection that may result in the death of people with immune deficiency. It is known that Cryptosporidium parvum and Cryptosporidium hominis infections may be spread by contaminated well and tap waters. The facts that there is no certain and reliable cure and that the organisms may be found asymptomatically in the healthy people increases the importance of cryptosporidiosis. Our study has been performed in the city of Mersin and surrounding areas. A total of 100 samples of water were taken from taps (44 samples),

A 29-year-old woman with ovale malaria (most likely contracted, together with asymptomatic schistosomiasis, in East Africa two years previously) had fever, nausea and confusion, jaundice, anaemia, thrombocytopenia, hyponatraemia and hypokalaemia. She was initially diagnosed with and treated for blood-smear-positive vivax malaria. Because of the unusual clinical presentation, blood was analysed by a malaria species-specific nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay which identified Plasmodium ovale as the only infecting species. This case illustrates (i) that a detailed travel history remain

Homozygous deficiency of the second component of complement (C2) is the most common inherited deficiency of complement. Although C2 deficiency has been detected in asymptomatic individuals, patients usually present with either autoimmune disease or recurrent pyogenic infection, particularly due to encapsulated bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae type b and Neisseria meningitidis. Interestingly, infection is the most common mode of presentation of C2 deficiency in young children (1). An association between C2 deficiency and IgG subclass deficiency has also been pre

Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human stomach, especially during childhood. However, a variety of H. pylori strains exists, with major differences in virulence characteristics which probably account for different clinical symptoms, and the majority of infected subjects remains asymptomatic. Helicobacter pylori infection is correlated with socioeconomic conditions and hygienic circumstances, resulting in an extremely high prevalence in children in developing countries. Commercial screening tests are not capable of separating the more virulent strains (type I with vacuolating toxin VacA and Ca

Predictors of disease progression were studied in 89 asymptomatic HIV-infected patients who were prospectively evaluated for psychosocial variables and the development of clinical symptoms over a period of 2 years. The subjects were assessed for symptoms, laboratory measures, demographic variables, social and personal resources, mental status, alcohol, nicotine and drug use, sexual activity and risk behaviour, and sexually transmitted diseases. After 1 year, 17% of the patients had developed HIV-associated symptoms (symptomatic disease or AIDS), and after 2 years, 32% had developed symptoms or

Wild mice and voles were tested for Cryptosporidium during a 2-year survey at an agricultural site in Warwickshire, United Kingdom. C. parvum and C. muris, the two cryptosporidial species known to infect mammals, were detected. Prevalence figures of 22%, 21% and 13% noted for C. parvum for Mus domesticus, Apodemus sylvaticus and Clethrionomys glareolus, respectively, were higher than those recorded for C. muris at 10%, 6% and 2%. C. parvum causes the sometimes severe diarrhoeal disease cryptosporidiosis in many hosts, but the wild rodents were asymptomatic. The discovery of C. muris in A. sylv

Etiologic role for HP appears to be best established in histologically proven gastritis. The major factors mediating gastritis induced by the colonization of the "gastric type" mucosa with HP are probably cytotoxins, cytokines and free radicals activated by this organisms. The deficiency of negative feedback in somatostatin-gastrin link in antral gastritis may result in an excessive gastrin release and increased gastric acid secretion with increased duodenal acid load under basal state and after meal. Recent NIH consensus 1994 proposes that: (1) ulcer patients with HP require treatment with an

The central executive component (CE) of Baddeley's working memory model (Baddeley, 1992) was evaluated in 26 asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus-infected individuals (HIV+) and 23 HIV-control subjects using a dual-task working memory paradigm. The HIV+ and HIV- groups showed an equivalent reduction in performance on both the primary task (visual vigilance) and the secondary task (letter span) when they were performed concurrently relative to when either task was performed alone. This result suggested normal CE functioning in these HIV+ subjects. In contrast, the HIV+ subjects had signifi

Cryptococcosis is an opportunistic infection caused by a ubiquitous encapsulated yeast, Cryptococcus neoformans. The pulmonary infection is primary site and most frequently self-limited and may be asymptomatic. The most common recognized site of disseminated cryptococcosis is the central nervous system. The cutaneous cryptococcosis is rare and nonspecific. More recently, in patients with AIDS, some cases of cutaneous cryptococcosis resembling molluscum contagiosum have been described and occasionally appeared before systemic signs and symptoms. To our knowledge, this has not previously been re

The incidence of syphilis is increasing, predominantly among urban heterosexuals. Early recognition is important in preventing progression of the disease and transmission of Treponema pallidum to the fetus. Untreated primary syphilis is characterized by intervals of active disease punctuated by periods of latency. Not all patients progress through each phase, and the physician must be alert to varying presentations. Cutaneous lesions are the hallmark of syphilis. However, diagnosis can be difficult, because the lesions can be asymptomatic or transient. The course of syphilis is accelerated in

The majority of patients with Aids suffer from diarrhea and weight loss, as well as opportunistic infection and tumors of the gastrointestinal tract; endoscopy is frequently necessary. Often, but not always, it is possible to identify an opportunistic tumor or infection which explains the patient's signs and symptoms. In other cases, HIV may itself be pathogenic. The most important opportunistic pathogens are Candida albicans (stomatitis and esophagitis), cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus (esophagus, stomach, biliary system, colon), cryptosporidium (small intestine, biliary system), Iso

HIV infection of the newborn is now known to result mostly from mother-to-foetus transmission. The risk of transmission is at least 40 p. 100. However, the circumstances of passage are little known, and there is no maternal virological parameter capable of evaluating individual risks. The disease is more severe in children than in adults. Rare are the children who remain asymptomatic for more than 15 months; one out of three of them develop severe acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and die within the first 2 or 3 years of life. A specific encephalopathy is observed in about 30 p. 100 of the in

Immunoglobulin isolated from sera of homosexual men infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) inhibited the reverse transcriptase (RT) activity of HIV. The inhibitory activity was specifically directed against HIV RT, and not against other mammalian retrovirus RT, including human T-lymphotropic virus type I. The relative titer of anti-RT antibody was significantly higher in asymptomatic men than in patients with lymphadenopathy or acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related complex. There was no correlation between the relative titer of anti-RT antibody and the relative titers of

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a rare extranodal B-cell lymphoma, representing the most common primary pulmonary lymphoma (< 0.5% of all lung malignancies). Diagnosis is difficult because of its nonspecific clinical and radiological characteristics, which often resemble infections, inflammatory diseases, or other malignancies. Typical imaging findings include nodules, consolidations, or, less frequently, interstitial patterns such as ground-glass opacities. A conclusive diagnosis requires histological examination, augmented by immunohistochemistry an

BACKGROUND: The lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) is predominantly found in the stomach. The few cases reported in the literature of MALT lymphomas affecting the ileum are in patients who are already symptomatic and with clear advanced endoscopic findings. We present the first case of an asymptomatic female patient who underwent colonoscopy as a routine examination with the findings of an ulcer in the distal ileum region, which histopathological examination and associated immunohistochemistry revealed the diagnosis of MALT lymphoma.
CASE SUMMARY: A 57-year-old asymptoma

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has become a major health event that endangers people health throughout China and the world. Understanding the factors associated with COVID-19 disease severity could support the early identification of patients with high risk for disease progression, inform prevention and control activities, and potentially reduce mortality. This study aims to describe the characteristics of patients with COVID-19 and factors associated with severe or critically ill presentation in Jiangsu province, China.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a widely prevalent herpesvirus that reaches seroprevalence rates of up to 95% in several parts of the world. The majority of CMV infections are asymptomatic, albeit they have severe detrimental effects on immunocompromised individuals. Congenital CMV infection is a leading cause of developmental abnormalities in the USA. CMV infection is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases in individuals of all ages. Like other herpesviruses, CMV regulates cell death for its replication and establishes and maintains a latent state in the host. Although CMV-mediated re
