Perspectives on Concurrent Strength and Endurance Training in Healthy Adult Females: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Both strength and endurance training are included in global exercise recommendations and are the main components of training programs for competitive sports. While an abundance of research has been published regarding concurrent strength and endurance training, only a small portion of this research has been conducted in females or has addressed their unique physiological circumstances (e.g., hormonal profiles related to menstrual cycle phase, menstrual dysfunction, and hormonal contraceptive use), which may influence training responses and adaptations. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to co

"A Vegetarian vs. Conventional Hypocaloric Diet: The Effect on Physical Fitness in Response to Aerobic Exercise in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes." A Parallel Randomized Study.

It has been shown that it is possible to modify macronutrient oxidation, physical fitness and resting energy expenditure (REE) by changes in diet composition. Furthermore, mitochondrial oxidation can be significantly increased by a diet with a low glycemic index. The purpose of our trial was to compare the effects of a vegetarian (V) and conventional diet (C) with the same caloric restriction (-500 kcal/day) on physical fitness and REE after 12 weeks of diet plus aerobic exercise in 74 patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). An open, parallel, randomized study design was used. All meals were prov

Hyperventilation as a strategy for improved repeated sprint performance.

Repeated high-intensity sprints incur substantial anaerobic metabolic challenges and create an acidic muscle milieu that is unfavorable for subsequent performance. Hyperventilation, resulting in respiratory alkalosis, acts as a compensatory mechanism for metabolic acidosis. This study tested the hypothesis that hyperventilation performed during recovery intervals would attenuate performance decrement in repeated sprint pedaling. Thirteen male university athletes performed 10 sets of 10-second maximal pedaling on a cycle ergometer with a 60-second recovery between sets under control (spontaneou

Lower limb mechanics in kendo men and kote strikes: a within-subject comparison of joint-torque and ground-reaction-force temporal coordination and timing strategies.

Kendo striking depends on temporal coordination across joints from the ground to the upper limbs, and task demands differ between men and kote. We aimed to compare, within subjects, lowerlimb joint torques and groundreaction forces-and their temporal coordination-between kendo men and kote strikes. Nineteen trained collegiate kendo athletes performed both strikes. Three-dimensional kinematics (250 Hz) and GRF (1000 Hz) were synchronised from movement onset-defined as centre-of-mass speed ≥0.15 m·s-1 -to the instant before impact. Torques (hip, knee, ankle) and GRF (Fy, Fz, Fyz) were normalised

Inside the minds of football athletes: Examination of age, expertise, and gender disparities in personality traits.

Personality research holds a longstanding position in scientific exploration. Yet, there remains a significant gap in the study of personality characteristics of football athletes and their interaction with performance. Utilizing the Five Factor Model (FFM) of personality we assessed personality traits of 2085 males and females. First, differences between football players and two comparison samples of students and inactives were analysed. Subsequently, a series of analyses examined variations within the football player group, considering expertise, age, and gender. Football players, in contras

Ultrasound-Driven Diagnosis of Hamate Hook Stress Fracture in Athlete: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Early diagnosing a stress fracture of the hook of the hamate is challenging with plain X-rays alone. However, it is necessary to determine the appropriate treatment method to allow athletes to return to sports as soon as possible. We present a case in which diagnosis of stress fracture of the hook of the hamate in a professional baseball player was confirmed on the day of injury by ultrasound imaging, and early intervention was performed. CASE REPORT The patient was a 22-year-old male professional baseball player. During hitting practice, he experienced pain in his right palm, then

Two Novel Variants in Genes of Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy - a Case Report.

SUMMARY BACKGROUND: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a heritable cardiomyopathy, characterized by fibrofatty replacement of myocytes in the right ventricular, left ventricular or both ventricles. It is caused by pathogenic variants of genes encoding desmosomal (JUP, DSP, PKP2, DSG2, DSC2) and non-desmosomal proteins, and is one of the most common causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. Therefore, early identification, correct prevention and treatment can prevent adverse outcomes. CASE REPORT: Our case presents a 65-years-old man with recurrent ventricular ta

In vivo stiffness assessment of patellar and quadriceps tendons by strain ultrasound elastography.

BACKGROUND: The patellar and quadriceps tendons are responsible for the extension mechanism of the knee joint and frequently become inflamed during sports. Diagnosis and determination of when an athlete can return to sports following these injuries are usually performed by assessing morphological features and functional outcomes. Nevertheless, mechanical properties are not being assessed. OBJECTIVE: To describe the stiffness characteristics of these two tendons over the range of knee flexion and to test the feasibility of using strain ultrasound elastography (SE). METHODS: SE with an acousti

Returning to overuse activity following a supraspinatus and infraspinatus tear leads to joint damage in a rat model.

Large rotator cuff tears (supraspinatus and infraspinatus) are common in patients who perform overhead activities (laborers, athletes). In addition, following large cuff tears, these patients commonly attempt to return to pre-injury activity levels. However, there is a limited understanding of the damaging effects on the uninjured joint tissues when doing so. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of returning to overuse activity following a supraspinatus and infraspinatus tear on shoulder function and the structural and biological properties of the intact tendons

Elite male adolescent gymnast who achieved union of a persistent bilateral pars defect.

An adolescent 15-yr-old male competitive gymnast presented to a university-based multidisciplinary spine institute with a persistent low-back pain for 18 mos. Although the results of x-rays were negative, his pain rendered him unable to compete in his sport any longer. A computed tomography scan was performed, which showed a bilateral pars fracture at L5, without spondylolisthesis. A nuclear medicine bone scan revealed negative findings, confirming chronic nonunion. The patient completed a 4-wk course of physical therapy 6 mos before our intervention, without any relief of pain or radiologic e

Timing the arrival at 2340 m altitude for aerobic performance.

This study tested the hypothesis that maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) and performance increase upon altitude acclimatization at moderate altitude. Eight elite cyclists were studied at sea level, and after 1 (Day 1), 7 (Day 7), 14 (Day 14) and 21 (Day 21) days of exposure to 2340 m. Capillary blood samples were taken on these days before performing two consecutive maximal exercise trials. Acclimatization increased hemoglobin concentration and arterial oxygen content. On Day 1, VO(2max) and time to exhaustion (at 80% of sea-level maximal power output) decreased by 12.8% (P<0.05) and 25.8% (P<0.
