Neuroendocrine, behavioral, cardiovascular and autonomic responses to acute and repeated restraint stress in male rats.

Biological systems seem to be differently affected by stress, resulting in expression of both adaptative and maladaptive responses. The present study aimed to compare the neuroendocrine (plasma corticosterone), behavioral (anxiogenic- and depressive-like effects), cardiovascular (blood pressure and heart rate) and autonomic (tail skin temperature and frequency-domain analysis of blood pressure and pulse interval variabilities) responses observed during an acute (single 2 h session) versus the 21st [2 h/day for 21 consecutive days) restraint stress session. We found that acute restraint stress

Rapid Progression and Shorter Survival in Indians Affected with Probable MSA: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a fatal alpha-synucleinopathy characterized by variable combinations of parkinsonism and autonomic and cerebellar dysfunctions. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to prospectively study the natural history of probable MSA, including cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction (CAD) and serum alpha-synuclein. METHODS: Sixty probable MSA patients (MSA-P = 19; MSA-C = 41) and 30 age-and-gender-matched healthy controls were recruited. Disease severity (UPDRS III, UMSARS I, II, IV), CAD, and serum alpha-synuclein (ELISA) were assessed at baseline, 6-month (6 M-FU), and 12-m

Overlapping Physiologic Signs of Sepsis and Paroxysmal Sympathetic Hyperactivity After Traumatic Brain Injury: Exploring A Clinical Conundrum.

BACKGROUND: Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) occurs in a subset of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and is associated with worse outcomes. Sepsis is also associated with worse outcomes after TBI and shares several physiologic features with PSH, potentially creating diagnostic confusion and suboptimal management of each. This is the first study to directly investigate the interaction between PSH and infection using robust diagnostic criteria. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients with TBI admitted to a level I trauma center intensive care unit with

Temporal analysis of cardiovascular control and function following incomplete T3 and T10 spinal cord injury in rodents.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition that results in whole-body dysfunction, notably cardiovascular (CV) disruption and disease. Injury-induced destruction of autonomic pathways in conjunction with a progressive decline in physical fitness contribute to the poor CV status of SCI individuals. Despite the wide use of exercise training as a therapeutic option to reduce CV dysfunction, little is known about the acute hemodynamic responses to the exercise itself. We investigated CV responses to an exercise challenge (swimming) following both high and low thoracic contusion to determi

The use of heart rate turbulence and heart rate variability in the assessment of autonomic regulation and circadian rhythm in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus without apparent heart disease.

UNLABELLED: Background Systemic lupus erythematosus is a progressive autoimmune disease. There are reports suggesting that patients even without overt signs of cardiovascular complications have impaired autonomic function. The aim of this study was to assess autonomic function using heart rate turbulence and heart rate variability parameters indicated in 24-hour ECG Holter monitoring. Methods Twenty-six women with systemic lupus erythematosus and 30 healthy women were included. Twenty-four hour ambulatory ECG-Holter was performed in home conditions. The basic parameters of heart rate turbulenc

Clinical classification of syncope.

Syncope is a presenting symptom, and in itself is not a diagnosis. An etiology or a mechanism must be sought in all cases. Currently, most clinicians classify syncope on clinical grounds by attempting to ascertain its etiology. They then use this classification to guide further management. Using this approach, reflex syncope is the most common form of syncope, occurring in approximately 60% of syncope presentations. Orthostatic hypotension presents in around 15% with arrhythmic syncope in 10% and structural heart disease as the cause of syncope in 5%; in 10% of patients no diagnosis is made. A

Early development of autonomic dysfunction may predict poor prognosis in patients with multiple system atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is diverse in clinical phenotype, disease progression, and prognosis. Sudden death is a leading cause of death in patients with MSA. OBJECTIVE: To determine what clinical factors affect the progression and survival prognosis of those with MSA. DESIGN: A retrospective review of the medical records of 49 consecutive Japanese patients with pathologically confirmed MSA (29 men and 20 women; mean +/- SD age at onset, 59.8 +/- 6.5 years). Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare the risks of being in a wheelchair-bound state, being in a bedridd

[Psychological factors in hypertension].

We briefly overview behavioral factors of possible relevance to essential hypertension. We examine, in particular, dimensions of individual differences relating to: (a) problems of anger and assertion; and (b) cardiovascular responsivity to behavioral stressors. Hypertensive patients do show larger cardiovascular reactions to common laboratory stressors than normotensive, controls, and similar differences emerge in comparisons of normotensive individuals with and without a family history of hypertension. Concerning the purported dispositional attributes of hypertensives, we also propose re-exa

AV node dysfunction in the mitral valve prolapse syndrome.

The mitral valve prolapse syndrome is associated with a variety of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. A portion of these patients manifest bradyarrhythmias, which in turn, may be the cause of lightheadedness and syncope. Thie study details the clinical and electrophysiologic characteristics of seven patients with symptomatic mitral valve prolapse and AV node dysfunction. The electrophysiology study demonstrated either a prolonged AH interval or abnormal response to atrial pacing in six of seven patients. A significant proportion of these patients had abnormalities of sinus node function and d

Cancer Neuroscience: From Local Neuro-Immune Microenvironments to Systemic Brain-Body Circuitry.

Classic oncological models have largely restricted cancer pathogenesis to autonomous genetic mutations within localized cells. Current research, however, reframes solid tumors as structurally integrated "pseudo-organs" that rely on host neural networks for survival. This review examines the reciprocal signaling networks connecting nervous, immune, and malignant cells within the tumor microenvironment. At the tissue level, we outline how tumors construct de novo neural architecture via axonogenesis, cellular plasticity, and the assembly of functional neuro-neoplastic synapses. Expanding beyond

Correlations between EEG and intestinal electrical stimulation.

Many diseases affect the autonomous nervous system and the central nervous system simultaneously, for example Parkinson's disease or irritable bowel syndrome. To study neurophysiologic interactions between the intestinal electrical activity and the electroencephalography (EEG) pattern of the brain, we combined intestinal electrical stimulation (IES) and non-invasive telemetric full-band DC EEG recordings in an acute pig-model. Intestinal motility was monitored with accelerometers. Brain activity was analyzed with regard to network driven phenomena like phase amplitude coupling (PAC) within two

The heart rate recovery is impaired in participants with premature ejaculation.

Premature ejaculation (PE) is one of the most common sexual disorders in men. Excessive activity of the sympathetic nervous system is considered as one of the pathological mechanisms of PE. Heart rate recovery (HRR) is a noninvasive and easily applicable method for evaluating autonomic functions. We aimed to investigate the relationship between PE and HRR. This cross-sectional study included 42 consecutive patients with lifelong PE and 98 healthy volunteers. All participants underwent stress tests according to age-dependent target heart rates outlined in the Bruce protocol. When the maximal he

Diffuse Lewy body disease.

Diffuse Lewy body disease, also called dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), is defined as progressive dementia and pathological Lewy bodies distributed in the central and autonomic nervous systems. The clinical features are dementia, cognitive fluctuations, visual hallucinations, parkinsonism, and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). Confirmatory techniques include dopamine transporter imaging, meta-iodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) myocardial scintigraphy, and polysomnography. The pathology finding in DLB is misfolded alpha-synuclein, the main component of Lewy bodies, propagating in the central nervous s

Plasma catecholamine levels before and after paroxetine treatment in patients with panic disorder.

Catecholamines such as norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine are closely related to the autonomic nervous system, suggesting that panic disorder may involve elevated catecholamine levels. This study investigated basal and posttreatment catecholamine levels in patients with panic disorder. A total of 29 patients with panic disorder and 23 healthy controls participated in the study. Panic disorder patients received paroxetine treatment for 12 weeks after clinical tests and examination had been conducted. We investigated the difference in basal levels of catecholamine and measured the changes

[Nerve growth factor and diabetic neuropathy].

INTRODUCTION: The progress made by contemporary neurobiology opens new horizons both for study and for treatment of disorders of the nervous system. At the present time we are in the age of growth factors. These are molecules which affect survival, development and the normal functioning of cell populations. DEVELOPMENT: One of the most widely studied growth factors is nervous growth factor (NGF) which is necessary for normal life of various types of neurones, including sensory nerves and nerves derived from the neural crests. Diabetic neuropathy, worldwide a major neurological disorder, is pr

Central leptin stimulates corticosterone secretion at the onset of the dark phase.

Leptin, a hormone secreted by adipose tissue in proportion to body adiposity, is proposed to be involved in the central nervous regulation of food intake and body weight. In addition, evidence is emerging that leptin regulates neuroendocrine and metabolic functions as well, presumably via its action in the central nervous system (CNS). To investigate this regulatory effect of leptin, we infused 3.5 microg of human leptin directly into the third cerebral ventricle (i3vt) of lean male Long-Evans rats, 90 min before the onset of their dark phase. Before and after infusion, blood samples were with
