The association between occupational mechanical exposures and low-back and lower-body musculoskeletal disorders: an overview of systematic reviews.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic overview was to summarize and synthesize systematic reviews (SRs) with meta-analyses of the association between occupational mechanical exposures and low-back and lower-body musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). METHODS: A protocol was registered in PROSPERO and a systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and CINAHL. Systematic reviews were considered eligible if they included occupational mechanical exposures and provided weighted measures of association in relation to specific MSDs. Data were extracted from each SR, incl

A Hospital Avoidance Pathway With Digitally Supported Follow-Up for Low Back Pain: An Alternative to Emergency Department Care.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a common reason for presentation to an emergency department (ED) but LBP-care in this setting is frequently low-value, costly and often fails to meet system and patient needs. Other service options are urgently required. This study evaluated a novel care pathway that diverted people with suspected non-serious LBP seeking ED-care to a community-based, hospital avoidance service in a large South Australian health network. METHODS: A retrospective quantitative analysis was conducted on data extracted from electronic medical records (demographics, service activi

Association of proximity to greenspaces and back pain in older men and women: Analysis of data from two cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Access to greenspace (eg, parks) may improve aspects of physical and mental health that are known biopsychosocial contributors to back pain. However, little is known about the association between access to greenspace and back pain. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used data from the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF) and the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS) to investigate the association of proximity to greenspace with back pain among community-dwelling older adults living in Portland, Oregon, USA. Geospatial software characterized proximity to greenspace (dista

Abdominal and Back Pain Initially Suspected to Be Transient Intestinal Ischemia in a Case of Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis Bacteremia.

Streptococcus dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis (SDSE) has been increasingly recognized as a causative pathogen of skin and soft tissue infections and bacteremia, particularly in elderly individuals or those with underlying comorbidities. It typically presents with fever and localized pain associated with cellulitis; however, it may occasionally manifest with nonspecific symptoms, leading to diagnostic delay. We report the case of an 87-year-old man who presented with abdominal and lower back pain, initially suspected to have intestinal ischemia based on contrast-enhanced computed tomography fin

An extensive skin defect and necrotizing fasciitis derived from a neglected epidermal cyst on the upper back: A case report.

RATIONALE: Epidermal cysts are one of the most prevalent skin lesions encountered in clinical practice. Although generally harmless, complications may arise when epidermal cysts are neglected, leading to potentially severe consequences, such as necrotizing fasciitis. Here, we report an unusual case of an extensive soft-tissue defect and necrotizing fasciitis resulting from an untreated epidermal cyst on the upper back. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 37-year-old male patient presented with a 12 × 10 cm epidermal cyst on his back with severe inflammation. The patient was also diagnosed with diabetes melli

How the Camel's Back Breaks: A Scoping Review of Cumulative Occupational Distress and the Conceptual Absence of Micro-Trauma in Nursing.

Background/Objectives: Nursing involves repeated exposure to emotionally, morally, and psychologically distressing experiences, yet the mechanisms through which low-intensity occupational stressors accumulate and contribute to psychological harm remain conceptually unclear. This scoping review examined how the nursing literature conceptualises the cumulative effects of repeated occupationally distressing experiences and identified the conceptual gap created by the absence of a unifying term such as micro-trauma. Methods: A scoping review was undertaken to map concepts used to describe cumulati

Reliability and Construct Validity of the Six-Minute Step Test in Individuals With Non-Specific Chronic Low Back Pain.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The six-minute step test (6MST) is a practical, field-based assessment that may provide useful information about stepping performance in individuals with non-specific chronic low back pain (NSCLBP). However, evidence regarding its measurement properties in this population is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the inter-rater reliability and construct validity of the 6MST in individuals with NSCLBP. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional psychometric study to evaluate the 6MST's inter-rater reliability and construct validity using a known-groups approach. T

An optical method for deriving the anterior and posterior curvatures of intraocular lenses using dual back-vertex power measurements.

We present a theoretical framework to estimate the anterior and posterior radii of curvature of a thick intraocular lens (IOL) by measuring its back-vertex power in two orientations. Armed with the lens thickness, refractive index, and a potential axial offset d from haptic angulation, one can determine the individual surface powers and, thus, the geometry of the implant. Using paraxial optics, we derive the back-vertex power in normal and flipped orientations. We consider two cases: d = 0 (no haptic-induced offset) and [Formula: see text] (finite shift). In the d = 0 case, using standard para

"When My Past Came Back to Me:" Understanding Mothers' Decisions to Disclose Their Experiences of Sexual Assault to Their Children.

This study examines mothers' decisions to disclose past experiences of sexual assault to their children. These survivors reported their assaults to the police years ago, but no action was taken in their cases. When new DNA evidence came to light, prosecutors re-opened their cases, which caused significant disruption in survivors' personal lives and in their family dynamics. We examined whether the mothers in our sample decided to tell their children about their past sexual assault and pending court cases, and whether these decisions varied by the current age of their children. We conducted exp

Hindcast (back to 1955) and forecast (up to 2100) of sea-surface pH at BATS and hydrostation S (Bermuda area).

Time-series measurements in the North Atlantic Ocean at the Hydrostation S site (32°10'N, 64°30'W), started in 1954. At that time, temperature and salinity were measured but it was not yet possible to measure the properties of the oceanic carbon cycle. We use these important hydrographic data with the knowledge acquired from more recent measurements (since 1989) of the CO2/carbonate properties at the near-by Bermuda Atlantic Time Series Study (BATS; 31°40'N, 64°10'W), to reconstruct, using two different approaches based upon multi-linear-regressions, the pH at this hydrostation S since its beg

Stretch syncope in humans: Evidence for symptomatic neural reflex hypotension triggered by stretching of shoulder and upper back muscles.

BACKGROUND: Stretch-induced syncope (SIS) is a poorly understood condition that we hypothesized may be due to a neural reflex hypotensive response triggered by stretching of shoulder/upper back muscles. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the impact of shoulder/upper back stretching on heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) responses in patients with SIS, with the findings in controls evaluated for symptoms unrelated to stretching. METHODS: The study population comprised 33 individuals: 9 otherwise healthy patients with SIS and 24 healthy controls. Beat-to-beat HR and systolic BP (SBP) and mean

Transferrin confers imidacloprid resistance by attenuating ROS-induced apoptotic signaling in the white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera.

Transferrins constitute a multifunctional protein family involved in cellular iron homeostasis, reproductive regulation, and innate immune responses. Recently, the critical roles of these proteins in insect pesticide resistance have garnered considerable attention. However, the molecular mechanisms by which transferrins alleviate pesticide-induced toxicity remain poorly understood. In this study, we performed genome-wide identification of transferrin family members in Sogatella furcifera (white-backed planthopper, WBPH), a devastating agricultural pest, and investigated their functional roles

Effect of the back skeleton ligand on the ultrafast excited-state dynamics of Cu(I) cyano substituted bipyridine complexes.

Cu(I) complexes have attracted a lot of research interest as potential alternatives to functional noble metal complexes. In previous research studies of the ultrafast dynamics of Cu(I) complexes, most of the acceptor ligands used are symmetric and examples of only a limited number of asymmetric ligands were reported. To further understand the ultrafast excited state dynamics of Cu(I) complexes with an asymmetric cyano-substituted bipyridine electron acceptor ligand, Cu(I) complexes with 6-cyano-2,2'-bipyridine and 4,4'-dimethyl-6-cyano-2,2'-bipyridine ligands in dichloromethane and acetonitril

Running is acceptable and efficacious in adults with non-specific chronic low back pain: the ASTEROID randomised controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Running is one of the most accessible forms of exercise, yet its suitability for adults with chronic low back pain (LBP) is unknown. This study assessed the efficacy and acceptability of running in adults with chronic LBP. METHODS: This two-arm parallel (1:1) individually randomised controlled trial allocated 40 participants (mean (SD) age: 33 (6) years, female: 50%) with non-specific chronic LBP to a 12-week intervention or waitlist control. The intervention was a progressive run-walk interval programme comprising three 30-min sessions per week that were digitally delivered and r

Cost savings of reducing opioid prescribing for the treatment of people with low back pain in general practice: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Contrary to clinical guidelines, opioids are frequently prescribed early in the management of LBP in primary care, leading to potential harm and downstream healthcare costs. The objective of this study was to model the one-year impacts of strategies that reduce opioid prescribing for low back pain (LBP) in primary care on healthcare costs and overdose deaths Australia-wide and explore the potential for such strategies to be cost-neutral. METHODS: Two decision tree models were developed: the healthcare actions model,

Screening for depression, anxiety, and psychological distress associated with low back pain by musculoskeletal and spinal clinicians. A scoping review.

PURPOSE: A biopsychosocial assessment of a person with low back pain (LBP) should include the detection of psychological risk factors. Pragmatically, clinicians often use their clinical impression rather than questionnaires to screen for psychological risk factors. This scoping review explores how accurately depression, anxiety, and psychological distress can be identified by musculoskeletal (MSK) or spinal clinicians using clinical impression alone. METHODS: The study protocol was pre-registered on Open Science Framework (OSF) https://osf.io/pt3a6/ . A comprehensive search strategy using fiv

Impact of education in patients undergoing physiotherapy for lower back pain: a level I systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Lower back pain (LBP) is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders in modern society, with a lifetime incidence of up to 90%. According to most national and international guidelines, educational interventions play a central role in the multimodal treatment of LBP. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the impact of educational interventions on pain and disability in patients with LBP undergoing physiotherapy compared to patients without educational interventions undergoing physiotherapy. METHODS: In October 2024, a comprehensive computer-aided search was p
