The purpose of this prospective study performed at a non-university hospital was to assess the role of enteroclysis in the diagnosis of unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, gastrointestinal bleeding, and chronic diarrhea done following inconclusive imaging or endoscopic procedures. 184 consecutive patients were subjected to enteroclysis over 25 months. 84 (46%) had abdominal pain, 52 (28%) gastrointestinal bleeding, and 48 (26%) chronic diarrhea. In order to determine the accuracy of endoscopic localization of colon cancers, the endoscopic location was compared to the actual location at the time of operation in 320 patients who underwent resection of intraabdominal colon cancer between 1983 and 1988. The endoscopic location was correct in 86% of the cases. There were 44 endoscopic errors, including seven missed cancers. One-third of all endoscopic errors occurred when the tumor was in the cecum. Two basic anilides EA-7 and EA-8 were investigated for their antispasmodic activity against a variety of spasmogens on different tissues from different species of animals and comparison was made with lignocaine. EA-8 was found to be the most potent in this respect, followed by EA-7 and lignocaine. The antispasmodic potency does not correspond to their local anaesthetic potency. This suggests a direct depressant effect on tissues.

Pseudomonas testosteroni H-8 utilizes as sole carbon source benzene sulfonate (BS), p-toluene sulfonate (pTS), and ethylbenzene sulfonate (EBS) but not higher homologs. The subject of malrotation in infants and children without other congenital anatomical abnormalities is reviewed from the perspective of experience with 97 patients operated in 11 years. Fifty-five patients were younger than 6 weeks at operation. They often presented with bilious vomiting, in contrast to older children who presented with non-bilious vomiting or feeding problems. Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is a disorder of hem biosynthesis resulting from a decreased activity of the uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase enzyme. Hem precursors are accumulated in the blood, liver and skin. Inherited and acquired factors also contribute to the pathogenesis of PCT.
