Aggression Replacement Training for Violent Young Men in a Forensic Psychiatric Outpatient Clinic.

The effects of Aggression Replacement Training (ART) were explored in a group of Dutch violent young men aged 16 to 21 years, who were obliged by the court to follow a treatment program in a forensic psychiatric outpatient clinic. To evaluate the training, patients completed a set of self-report questionnaires at three moments in time: at intake/before a waiting period, after the waiting period/before the training, and after the training. During the waiting period, the patients did not change on most measures, although they displayed a significant increase in anger. The patients who completed

The place of additional individual psychotherapy in the treatment of alcoholism: a randomized controlled study in nonresponders to anticraving medication-results of the PREDICT study.

BACKGROUND: Goal of the presented study is to evaluate whether alcohol-dependent patients given additional individual psychotherapy after a heavy relapse during pharmacotherapy remain abstinent for longer than those who continue with pharmacotherapy alone. METHODS: In a randomized, multicenter study, 109 alcohol-dependent patients who had suffered a heavy relapse either while receiving anticraving medication or placebo were randomized into 2 groups. One group received medication, medical management, and additional individual, disorder-specific, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, while the co

[Therapeutic approaches for obesity and comorbidities in young immigrants].

The prevalence of overweight and obesity is higher in children and adolescents with a migrational background. However, if the country of origin is taken into account, the picture of these differences becomes more complex and more heterogeneous. Predictors for obesity and the ethnic differences are manifold and can be roughly differentiated into cultural, social and individual causes as well as into causes related to the process of acculturation. There are special problems in the long-term health care of obese adolescents with a migrational background. The most important are (1) treatment delay

One-year repeated cycles of cognitive training (CT) for Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Recent research suggests that a combination of both pharmacological and psychosocial treatments targeting cognitive functions improves cognition in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The present study evaluated the effectiveness of a 1-year cognitive training (CT) by comparing the cognitive performance of 16 patients with AD treated with CT and cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs) (experimental group) with the performance of 16 patients treated with a non-specific cognitive treatment and ChEIs (control group). METHODS: This study was a single-blind randomized controlled trial. T

An online emotional regulation system to deliver homework assignments for treating adjustment disorders.

Adjustment Disorders (AD) is a very common mental health problem in primary care. Only general treatment guidelines are available for its treatment. Our research team has developed a cognitive-behavioural treatment (CBT) supported by Virtual reality (EMMA system) that has shown its utility in the treatment of AD. EMMA is a VR adaptive display that adapts its presentation to the patient' therapeutic needs. So far, researchers have been centered on how to use the Information and Communication Technologies to deliver treatment within the therapeutic context. TEO is a completely open Online Emotio

Do pharmacological and behavioral interventions differentially affect treatment outcome for children with social phobia?

In a randomized trial for children with social phobia (SP), Social Effectiveness Therapy for Children (SET-C; a treatment consisting of exposure and social skills training) and fluoxetine were more effective than pill placebo in reducing social distress and behavioral avoidance, but only SET-C demonstrated significantly improved overall social skill and social competence. In the current study, the authors examined the specific social skills enhanced by SET-C using a recently developed coding schema. At posttreatment, children treated with SET-C displayed a more effective ability to manage the

The effects of combined acamprosate and integrative behaviour therapy in the outpatient treatment of alcohol dependence: a randomized controlled trial.

AIMS: The aim of this randomized, controlled, multisite trial was to evaluate the efficacy of combined treatment with integrative behaviour therapy (IBT) and acamprosate on drinking behaviour in detoxified alcohol-dependent patients. METHODS: A total of 371 patients were randomized to one of the three treatment conditions: IBT plus acamprosate, IBT plus placebo, or supportive counselling ('treatment as usual', TAU) plus acamprosate. The main outcome was success rate, i.e., rate of abstinence plus improvement according to the criteria of Feuerlein and Küfner (1989), at the end of the six-month

Motor impairment rehabilitation post acquired brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the efficacy of treatment strategies used to manage motor impairments following acquired brain injury (ABI) in order to provide guidance for clinical practice based on the best available evidence. METHODS AND MAIN OUTCOMES: A systematic review of the literature from 1980-2005 was conducted focusing on pharmacological, non-pharmacological, and exercise interventions available for motor impairments post ABI. The efficacy of a given intervention was classified as strong (supported by two or more randomized controlled trials (RCTs)), moderate (supported by a si

The effect of SpeechEasy on stuttering frequency in laboratory conditions.

UNLABELLED: The effect of SpeechEasy on stuttering frequency during speech produced in a laboratory setting was examined. Thirteen adults who stutter participated. Stuttering frequencies in two baseline conditions were compared to stuttering frequencies with the device fitted according to the manufacturer's protocol. The fitting protocol includes instructions for deliberate use of vowel prolongation. Relative to the initial baseline condition, stuttering was reduced by 74%, 36%, and 49% for reading, monologue, and conversation, respectively. In comparison, stuttering was reduced by 42%, 30%, a

A comparison of intensive behavior analytic and eclectic treatments for young children with autism.

We compared the effects of three treatment approaches on preschool-age children with autism spectrum disorders. Twenty-nine children received intensive behavior analytic intervention (IBT; 1:1 adult:child ratio, 25-40 h per week). A comparison group (n=16) received intensive "eclectic" intervention (a combination of methods, 1:1 or 1:2 ratio, 30 h per week) in public special education classrooms (designated the AP group). A second comparison group (GP) comprised 16 children in non-intensive public early intervention programs (a combination of methods, small groups, 15 h per week). Independent

Psychoanalysis as cognitive remediation: Dynamic and Vygotskian perspectives in the analysis of an early adolescent dyslexic girl.

The interface of neurocognitive problems and dynamic concerns are examined in the treatment of an early adolescent dyslexic girl. Despite previous intensive remediation, she had been unable to master reading and spelling, but made remarkable progress after a relatively brief period of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic and Vygotskian perspectives are integrated to provide a model of how play, within the analytic context, is mutative for learning disabled children. Through the process of reexteriorization in the transference, play allows for the interpretation and resolution of traumatic situations

A preliminary examination of treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder in chronic pain patients: a case study.

Manualized treatments have become popular, despite concern about their use when comorbid diagnoses are present. In this report, the efficacy of manualized posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) treatment was examined in the presence of chronic pain. Additionally, the effect of PTSD treatment on chronic pain and additional psychiatric diagnoses was explored. Six female patients with both PTSD and chronic pain following motor vehicle accidents were treated for PTSD using a multiple baseline design. The results indicate that manualized treatment for PTSD was effective in reducing PTSD symptoms in t

Study refusal and exclusion from a randomized treatment study of generalized social phobia.

We examine treatment exclusion and refusal rates as well as reasons for non-participation in a sub-sample of phone interviews conducted to determine eligibility for a randomized study of treatments for generalized social phobia (GSP). This study compared group comprehensive cognitive behavioral therapy (CCBT) to fluoxetine (FLU), placebo (PLA), or their combination. Results suggest that the major exclusion for the study was due to comorbid depression, followed by having a different diagnosis as primary. Patient refusal to enter the study was also common, with the most frequently reported reaso

Evaluation of child therapy and caregiver training in the treatment of school refusal.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relative efficacy of (1) child therapy, (2) parent/teacher training, and (3) the combination of child therapy and parent/teacher training in the treatment of anxiety-based school refusal. METHOD: Sixty-one school-refusing children (aged 7-14 years) from throughout Melbourne, Australia, were randomized to a child therapy program, a parent and teacher training program, or a combination of the two. Children were assessed before and after treatment, and at 4.5-month follow-up, by means of attendance records, self-report of emotional distress and self-efficacy, parent an

Panic and agoraphobia in a virtual world.

Virtual reality (VR) offers a great new perspective on what it can offer an individual. These new approaches can give an individual the immersion and cognitive guidance that they need to help overcome his or her disorder. VR differs from the traditional displays in computer graphics as these various displays are integrated to give the user a sense of presence or immersion in the virtual world. To more effectively treat panic and agoraphobic patients using VR, it is necessary to determine the physiological responses of nonphobics when placed in the virtual panic and agoraphobia environments. [Neuropsychological examination in evaluating dementia].

Neuropsychological assessment of dementia should be obtained using a two-step procedure: 1) a family physician performs a mental screening; 2) specialists determine the diagnosis after a thorough differential diagnostic process. This second step includes the quantitative neuropsychological assessment of the patients' cognitive functions which has the following purposes: a) to contribute to the differential diagnostic process; b) to aid in diagnosing patients at the earliest stage of dementia; c) to document disease progression and therapy outcomes; and, d) to identify relatively intact areas o

[Chronic fatigue syndrome. Clinical, social psychological problems and management].

Fatigue chronic syndrome (SFC) is the heir-at-law of neurasthenia. Both are seen like physical diseases and share certain therapeutic measures, such as sleep; they have the same symbolic function and enable patients as well as doctors reluctant to psychological dimensions of pathology, to get and express sympathy and attention. A strong controversy developed these last years concerning the SFC physiopathology particularly concerning the responsibility of viral infectious agents or psychiatric troubles. The SFC fatigue is unlikely hysterical or neuromuscular but it probably depends on several a
