Computational analysis of asymmetric thyroarytenoid and cricothyroid activation in human phonation.

Asymmetric activation of intrinsic laryngeal muscles is common in human phonation, yet its effects on vocal fold (VF) vibration and acoustic output remain unclear. In this study, we used a high-fidelity, anatomically resolved 3D computational framework to examine how asymmetric thyroarytenoid (TA) and cricothyroid (CT) activation regulates VF strain, vibratory dynamics, and flow-related acoustics. The results show that TA activation is the primary source of left-right mechanical imbalance. In contrast, CT asymmetry produces limited vibratory asymmetry due to the bilateral anatomical constraint

Proposed modification of the playing area in table tennis for wheelchair players (C3).

BACKGROUND: Short balls near the net in wheelchair table tennis reduce rally continuity and may increase injury risk due to biomechanical constraints and the limited forward reach of wheelchair players. Modifying the effective playing area may improve rally dynamics and enhance playing safety. METHODS: Twenty wheelchair table tennis players (class C3; mean age = 26.5 ± 3 years) participated in a repeated-measures quasi-experimental study. Players first competed on the official table and then on a modified table after completing an 8-week familiarisation training program. The modification intr

Comparison of Sprint Deceleration Capacity in Front- and Side-Facing End Stances in Multidirectional Team Sport Athletes.

Deceleration is a crucial task in multidirectional team sports. However, no research has explored how different end stances impact deceleration performance. This is important due to the multidirectional nature and variance of these directional changes in such sports. This study aimed to compare sprint deceleration capacity between front-facing (FF) and side-facing (SF) end stances using a deceleration threshold methodology to standardize the start point of deceleration. 20 team-sport athletes completed three maximal sprint deceleration trials in three conditions: FF and SF with both preferred

Relationship between the stiffness of the medial gastrocnemius and spatiotemporal variables during 100-m sprint running in collegiate sprinters.

Higher stiffness of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) has been reported to be associated with faster race time in 100-m sprint running. However, the association of muscle stiffness with spatiotemporal variables (i.e., step frequency, step length, flight time, stance time, flight distance, and stance distance), which are determinants of sprint running velocity, remains unknown. Thus, we aimed to elucidate the relationship between the passive/active stiffness of MG and spatiotemporal variables at the 50-60 m interval (maximal velocity phase) during 100-m sprint running. Using an ultrasound scanner (

Running Economy Benefits of Shoes Incorporating Advanced Footwear Technology Decrease With Increasing Incline and Are Negligible Above Moderate Gradients.

Shoes incorporating advanced footwear technology (AFT) improve running economy (RE) during level running by ~3%-4% compared to traditional shoes, but the extent to which benefits are preserved on inclines is unclear. Here we investigated the impact of AFT shoes on the energetics of incline running and examined how much benefits are reduced relative to level running. Twelve competitive male runners ran on a treadmill at four gradients (level, 3%, 6%, and 9%) in the Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% shoe (VF, AFT) and the Nike ZoomX Streakfly shoe (SF, control) in randomized order. Oxygen consumption wa

Energetic Contribution of the Human Plantar Aponeurosis to Locomotor Economy During Bipedal Walking and Running.

OBJECTIVES: The human plantar aponeurosis (PA) is a unique structure that spans the longitudinal arch of the foot, contributing to locomotor efficiency by storing and releasing elastic energy. It is traditionally believed that the PA primarily enhances running economy by reducing muscular effort and metabolic cost. However, the extent to which the PA contributes to walking versus running has not been quantitatively assessed. This study aims to quantitatively compare the mechanical contribution of the PA during walking and running, and to evaluate its relative contribution to whole-body metabol

Drift-free 3D orientation and displacement estimation for the lower extremities using independent inertial measurement units at various walking and running speeds.

This study presents a modular adaptation of the Drift-Free 3D Orientation and Displacement (DFOD) estimation method for estimating lower-extremity kinematics using independent inertial measurement units (IMU) during steady-state walking and running without calibration procedures or biomechanical models. The adapted DFOD was evaluated in ten healthy recreational runners during walking (2.5 and 5 km/h) and running (9, 11, and 13 km/h), using optical motion capture as reference. Good accuracy was achieved for the feet and lower legs in the sagittal plane (orientation) and forward direction (displ

Divergent trajectories of structural accrual and matrix-level mechanical properties during alveolar bone maturation.

Alveolar bone, a highly dynamic tissue supporting dentition, undergoes a poorly characterized transition from growth to maturity that is critical for orthodontic treatment and periodontal risk assessment. We integrated micro‑CT (μCT), nanoindentation creep modeling, and RNA sequencing to define structural, mechanical, and transcriptomic signatures of this transition in rats at 12 and 24 weeks, using the molar‑bearing alveolar region (M1) and the mandibular notch as a non‑alveolar reference. μCT revealed progressive cortical and trabecular bone accrual at 24 weeks, with trabeculae shifting from

Geometric confinement reveals scale-free velocity correlations in epithelial cell monolayer.

Collective cell flows are a hallmark of tissue dynamics in development, wound healing, and various diseases. Here, we investigate how the size, shape, topology and rigidity of patterned substrate influence the organization of flows and mechanical fields in an epithelial MDCK cell monolayer at several time and space scales. Using micropatterned substrates with and without free front (a strip and a closed racetrack), we show that confinement and obstacles induce spatial heterogeneities in velocity and force fields, leading to the emergence of domains, waves, and long-range correlations. We show

A Multimodal Dataset of Full-Body Kinematics and Kinetics from Laboratory- and Wearable-Based Systems.

Kinematic and kinetic biomechanical measurements are critical for understanding human movements. Although laboratory-based systems such as optical motion capture (OMC) and instrumented treadmills provide gold-standard accuracy, their use is confined to controlled laboratory settings. Wearable systems, including inertial motion capture (IMC) and pressure-sensing insoles, enable measurements in real-world conditions but require validation against laboratory-based references. In this study, we present a comprehensive dataset that combines laboratory- and wearable-based systems to capture synchron

A Hybrid Compliant-Tendon Laparoscopic Instrument for Distal Articulation and Grasping: Design and Experimental Validation.

BACKGROUND: Conventional laparoscopic instruments provide limited dexterity in confined anatomical environments, whereas existing articulated designs rely on complex rigid joints or motorised actuation, increasing mechanical complexity and limiting miniaturisation. METHODS: A hybrid compliant-tendon laparoscopic instrument was developed to integrate articulated distal motion and active grasping within a 5 mm form factor. The compliant segment was fabricated from super-elastic Nitinol, and grasping was achieved using a tendon-pulley mechanism. The system was evaluated using nonlinear finite el

Defining optimal frame rate for kinematic semen analysis of different dog breeds assessed by computer-assisted sperm analysis.

The development of computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) systems has expanded the number of analyzable seminal parameters. The aim of this study was to define the optimal frame rate analysis using CASA-Mot system, and to evaluate the effect of different dog breeds on the sperm kinematic variables measured. Ninety-seven ejaculates from 49 adult males of 11 dog breeds enrolled in an artificial insemination program were collected, extended and analyzed at 37 °C. Samples were obtained via manual stimulation at the Sangüeso Veterinary Clinic in Valencia, Spain, and were immediately analyzed using

Editorial Commentary: The Lateral Femoral Condyle Angle: Adding Another Piece to the Complex Puzzle of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Risk.

Predicting risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and ACL graft rupture remains an elusive challenge, with a substantial and emerging body of literature attempting to elucidate the clinical and anatomic factors that influence risk. In particular, anatomic risk factors have gained interest as advancements in imaging technology have conferred an enhanced ability to identify and quantify novel variables with differential magnitudes of clinical importance. The lateral femoral condyle angle represents one such novel metric that accounts for the relative flexion or extension of the lateral

Revisiting the tension-free paradigm: Axially prestretched elastomeric nanofibrillar grafts restore artery-like axial biomechanics in a preclinical model.

Healthy arteries function under substantial axial prestretch (AP), the ratio of in vivo to unloaded ex vivo length. Loss of AP promotes tortuosity and disturbed hemodynamics associated with vascular pathology, yet artery-like AP has not been incorporated in vascular reconstructions, because conventional substitutes are axially stiff and cannot safely sustain physiological AP. Here, we present Axially Prestretched Elastomeric Nanofibrillar Grafts (APENGs), fabricated by ultrahigh-speed (43,000 rpm) rotational collector electrospinning of biomedical-grade polyurethane. APENGs matched native arte

A pushing stick or a pulled rubber band: Material perception reverses the causal arrow in agent-patient dynamics.

People effortlessly recognize objects of various materials and predict their behavior from visual information. However, research on causal perception has largely underexplored dynamic interactions involving nonrigid objects, often treating spatiotemporal causality as independent of object properties. To address this gap, we introduce a novel causal perception phenomenon in which speed profiles alone evoke the perception of elastic, nonrigid motion in interactions between simple geometric figures, ultimately shaping causal perception. Using an ambiguous-motion stimulus involving a separation ev

Influence of anatomical geometry and fiber dispersion on Achilles tendon Mechanics: A finite element modelling approach.

Tendons adapt their structure and mechanical behavior in response to mechanical loading, where mechanical stimuli, such as strain, are believed to play a pivotal role. Recent studies employing finite element modeling have provided detailed insights into the distribution of strain across tendon structures under various loading conditions. However, most researchers have adopted highly simplified geometries, which are unable to capture the inherent strain heterogeneity in tendons, thereby emphasizing the need for anatomically accurate models. The current study explores how both geometry and fiber

Predictive neuromuscular simulations of slip-perturbed sit-to-walk reveal the combined effects of quadriceps weakness and sensorimotor delay.

BACKGROUND: Sit-to-walk (STW) is an unstable transition in which age-related quadriceps weakness and slowed sensorimotor processing may combine to elevate slip-related fall risk. This study quantified how vastus weakness and neural transmission delay, alone and together, affect stability and recovery mechanics during slip-perturbed STW. METHODS: We used predictive neuromuscular simulations of a sagittal-plane musculoskeletal model to impose a standardized slip-like disturbance (20 N anterior force to both heels for 0.1 s at t = 1.0 s) across a 5 × 5 factorial grid: vastus strength scaled to 1

Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) Swallowing Physiology: Novel Dysphagia Model Across Lifespan.

Dysphagia, a pervasive global health issue, is increasingly prevalent with age (presbyphagia), significantly impacting well-being. Studying its complex mechanisms in humans is challenging, often necessitating animal models. Ideally, such models should combine close anatomical and physiological similarity to humans with practical attributes that facilitate longitudinal research, including ease of handling and housing, manageable lifespan, compressed developmental timelines, and high fecundity. Marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), with their notable human-like similarities and practical advantages, r

Initial Head-Neck Posture Affects Neck Injury Risk in Pilot Emergency Ejection.

INTRODUCTION: Neck injuries are commonly sustained during emergency aircraft ejections, with head-neck posture identified as a critical factor influencing injury risk. Despite this, the relationship between the initial head-neck posture and neck injury during emergency ejection has not been comprehensively studied. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of head-neck postures on the dynamic neck response of pilots during ejection. METHODS: Using the Total Human Model for Safety, simulations were conducted involving four initial postures (i.e., rotation, flexion, exte
