Handgrip and Pinch Grip Strength as Functional Indicators of Pediatric Malnutrition and Early Response to Nutritional Therapy: A Preliminary Single-Center Study.

Background/Objectives: Pediatric malnutrition is associated with loss of muscle mass and impaired physical function. While anthropometric measurements are widely used for diagnosis, functional indicators that reflect early changes in nutritional status are limited in children. Handgrip strength has been proposed as a simple and objective marker of muscle function; however, pediatric data remain scarce. Methods: In this prospective controlled study, 55 children aged 3-17 years diagnosed with malnutrition and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were evaluated. Anthropometric measurements an

Comparison of Iodinated Contrast Doses Based on Total Body Weight and Lean Body Weight in Pediatric Patients: Impact on Image Quality and Contrast Exposure.

INTRODUCTION: Iodinated contrast dosing in pediatric computed tomography (CT) traditionally relies on total body weight (TBW), which may result in excessive contrast administration, particularly in patients with higher adiposity. Lean body weight (LBW)-based protocols have shown promise in adults but remain underexplored in children. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare contrast volume requirements and hepatic enhancement quality among three dosing protocols: LBW-based, TBW-based, and the Control Group (CG), based on the institutional standard for pediatric abdominal CT. METHODS: T

Course of arterial hypertension after open and endovascular procedures for significant carotid artery stenosis: single-center randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Arterial hypertension is present in most patients with ischemic stroke and is frequently associated with significant internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) and carotid artery stenting (CAS) are the primary techniques for carotid revascularization; however, their long-term effects on blood pressure control remain debated, particularly given the role of the carotid body in regulating sympathetic activity. Objective - to assess how the chosen method of carotid reconstruction influences the long-term course of arterial hypertension. METHODS: This single-c

Dosimetric impact of deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) technique in right-sided breast cancer radiotherapy: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: While deep-inspiration breath hold (DIBH) is widely used to reduce cardiac dose in left-sided breast cancer radiotherapy, its dosimetric benefits for right-sided cases remain underexplored. This study evaluated DIBH's impact on target coverage and organs at risk (OARs) in right-sided breast cancer, and investigated associations between dose-volume changes, lung volume, and anthropometric indices. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 33 patients with right-sided breast cancer treated using DIBH. Seventeen patients received whole-breast (WB) irradiation following post-br

Oocytes evaluation and in-vitro fertilization/intra cytoplasmic sperm injection outcomes.

The identification of markers capable of evaluating oocyte quality, its maturation, function, and embryo progression and implantation potential has frequently initiated research interest. However, to date, univocal criteria of oocyte competence do not exist. A major cause of low oocyte quality is evidently advanced maternal age. However, other factors may influence oocyte competence. Among these are obesity, lifestyle factors, genetic and systematic pathologies, ovarian stimulation protocols, laboratory procedures, culture, and environmental conditions. The morphological and maturational evalu

Diagnosis and treatment of MYH9-RD in an Australasian cohort with thrombocytopenia.

MYH9-related disorders (MYH9-RDs) caused by mutation of the MYH9 gene which encodes non-muscle myosin heavy-chain-IIA (NMMHC-IIA), an important motor protein in hemopoietic cells, are the most commonly encountered cause of inherited macrothrombocytopenia. Despite distinguishing features including an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance, giant platelets on the peripheral blood film accompanied by leucocytes with cytoplasmic inclusion bodies (döhle-like bodies), these disorders remain generally under-recognized and often misdiagnosed as immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). This may result in inappro

Hemopoietic progenitor cells in the blood as indicators of the functional status of the bone marrow after total-body and partial-body irradiation: experiences from studies in dogs.

The granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming cells (GM-CFC) were studied in the blood of dogs to evaluate their relationship to the bone marrow GM-CFC under normal conditions and their involvement in hemopoietic regeneration after different types of exposure to ionizing radiation. The GM-CFC could be defined as regular blood elements showing characteristic levels of their concentration in individual dogs in the range from 20 to 300 cells per ml. In relative terms, the GM-CFC numbers present in the whole blood of normal dogs were found to be on the order of 0.1% of the GM-CFC numbers present in th

Glucostat capacity and metabolic zonation in rat liver after portocaval anastomosis.

The activities and zonal distribution of key enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism were studied in livers of rats after end-to-side portocaval anastomosis. Sham-operated control animals with the same periods of interruption of hepatic blood supply as the shunted animals were pair-fed. The following alterations were observed: Food uptake was reduced to about 20% at the first postoperational day; it was then increased continuously to about 70% at day 8. Body weight, after a small 10% postoperational decrease, remained unaltered, but liver weight was lowered to 55% at day 8 and then stayed constant.

Integrating trauma-informed principles into collaborative care for depression in primary care.

Depression remains one of the leading causes of disability worldwide despite the availability of effective pharmacological and psychological treatments. Collaborative care has consistently improved depression outcomes through coordinated, multidisciplinary, and measurement-based approaches, particularly in primary care. However, substantial heterogeneity in treatment response persists, especially among adults with histories of childhood maltreatment, who frequently present with earlier illness onset, greater symptom severity, increased psychiatric comorbidity, poorer treatment response, and a

Partitioning secreted sweat in the measure of sweating efficiency during exercise.

Sweating efficiency (SE), defined as the proportion of total secreted sweat that evaporates from the body, is a critical determinant of evaporative heat loss and fluid requirements during exercise. Despite its physiological importance, direct assessments of evaporated sweat loss (ESL) and SE during upright, clothed exercise are rare, owing to substantial methodological and logistical challenges. Here, we describe a modernized direct system for quantifying ESL, total sweat loss (TSL), and SE during exercise while simultaneously partitioning the end-exercise fate of all secreted sweat. The metho

Retrospective study of foramen magnum development in patients with achondroplasia starting vosoritide before age 3.

PURPOSE: Achondroplasia (ACH) is a monogenic skeletal dysplasia caused by gain-of-function variants in FGFR3, leading to impaired endochondral ossification and foramen magnum stenosis. Although vosoritide promotes endochondral ossification, its effects on foramen magnum development remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the impact of early vosoritide administration on foramen magnum development in infants and young children with ACH, using longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: This retrospective, single-center case series included 9 patients who initiated vosoritide before ag

Motion-preserving direct osteosynthesis for a C2 complex fracture involving the vertebral body and posterior elements: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of C2 fractures often involves fixation across C1-2, which restricts atlantoaxial motion. Because the C1-2 segment plays a major role in cervical mobility, motion-preserving strategies may be desirable in selected cases. We report a case of a complex C2 fracture treated with navigation-assisted motion-preserving fixation. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 54-year-old man sustained multiple injuries in a motor vehicle collision, including a C2 fracture involving the vertebral body and posterior elements. He presented with neck pain but no neurological deficits. Computed tomogr
