We evaluated autonomic nervous function in 14 subjects with severe pre-eclampsia and 11 subjects with normal third-trimester pregnancies using standard cardiovascular tests, i.e. heart rate responses to deep breathing and standing up, and blood pressure response to standing up. Both of the heart rate responses were lower in subjects with severe pre-eclampsia than in the control group (P less than 0.01 and P less than 0.001, respectively). Four subjects with severe pre-eclampsia had postural hypotension, defined as a systolic blood pressure fall of at least 30 mmHg on standing. Our results show

The effect of increased concentrations of ambient negative air ions on incidental visual memory for words and purposive auditory memory for dichotic digits was investigated in 20 normal grade 4 children, 8 learning-disabled children, and 8 mildly mentally retarded children. Half in each group were assigned randomly to an unmodified air-placebo condition under double-blind testing procedures. All of the children breathing negatively ionized air were superior in incidental memory. In dichotic listening, the negative ions produced a counter-priming effect in the two learning-impaired groups, offs

Sleep polygraphic recording was carried out on 57 normal infants and on 100 SIDS siblings during morning naps between birth and the 4th month of life. Total sleep time and duration of sleep stages were determined. Central apnoeas of 2 sec and longer duration were analysed in AS, QS and IS. Apnoea index and number of apnoeas per 100 min of sleep stage were determined. Obstructive and mixed apnoeas were tabulated separately. Percentage of periodic breathing was also determined. Control babies and SIDS siblings were compared on these parameters, using the Mann-Whitney test. Between the 6th and 13

Cyclofenil is a new diphenyl ethylene derivative related to stilboestrol without oestrogenicity but with marked effects on connective tissue metabolism. The drug has been tested, in a daily dose of 200mg X3, in six patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) to analyze the expected beneficial effects on the PSS symptoms. The typical skin hardness, joint and muscle rigidity, and reduced breathing capacity were improved to varying dgrees. The only side-effect was a slight transient liver enzyme elevation in 1 out of 6 patients. A slight increase was found in urinary calcium and hydroxypro

Preoperative pulmonary function, intracardiac pressures and degree of dyspnea were related to the incidence of postoperative respiratory insufficiency in 102 adult patients who underwent cardiac surgery. The purpose was to seek a reliable method of prognosticating the risk of postoperative respiratory insufficiency, especially after the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. When the heart-lung pump was used, 24 of 30 patients with a vital capacity less than 80% of the predicted normal developed respiratory insufficiency, whereas only eight of 41 patients with a normal vital capacity had this complica

Objective. We tested the hypothesis that the oxygen uptake (O2) associated with systematic changes in skin temperature (Tsk) during ramp-incremental exercise would coincide with the respiratory compensation point (RCP) and not the gas exchange threshold (GET).Approach.Thirty-eight healthy adults (16 females; 24 ± 5 years, body mass 73.0 ± 11.4 kg, height 174.8 ± 8.5 cm) completed a ramp-incremental exercise test on a cycle ergometer (20-45 W min-1depending on self-reported aerobic fitness; selected to induce task disengagement within 10-15 min) in a climate-controlled laboratory. IntroductionAlthough long short-term memory (LSTM) networks have been tested to predict short-term respiratory motion, their performance in long-term forecasting under breathing irregularities must be assessed. We aim to evaluate and enhance the long-term prediction of internal motion from an external surrogate using subject-specific LSTM models through a hybrid, adaptive approach.MethodsConcurrent internal navigator and external bellows respiratory-motion waveforms were acquired for ten volunteers during two four-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (4DMRI) scans lasting 3-10 min each. Body posture influences cardiovascular and respiratory responses during exercise, yet in a clinical setting, differences in body positions are not considered when comparing different methodologies analyzing physical effort, such as cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), stress echo, or invasive hemodynamic. We aimed to investigate how upright (UP), semirecumbent (SR), and supine (SP) positions affect key CPET variables and cardiac output (CO) in healthy adults. Twelve healthy volunteers (30.9 ± 4.4 yr; 50% female) performed three randomized CPETs in UP, SR, and SP positions. Breath-by-breath

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Insulin resistance is associated with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in the general population, but its relationship with MASLD in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) remains insufficiently defined.
METHODS: We performed a 40 mU/m2/min hyperinsulinaemic-euglycaemic clamp to quantify the whole-body glucose disposal rate (M-value, mg/kg/min). Furthermore, we assessed insulin sensitivity using 13C-glucose breath test and estimated glucose disposal rate. Liver fat content (LFC) was measured by magnetic resonance spectroscopy. We also perform

BACKGROUND: Patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) have pulmonary system abnormalities resulting in impaired ventilatory reserve and heightened respiratory muscle work during submaximal exercise.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Do patients with HFpEF have higher respiratory muscle oxygen uptake (V˙o2) during submaximal exercise than control participants?
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Patients with HFpEF (n = 13) and control participants (n = 16) completed 2 visits. The first visit included pulmonary function tests and an incremental exercise test. On the second visit, participan

AIM: To investigate the impact of ongoing workshop training of the "Helping Babies Breathe" program on the durability of midwives' knowledge and skills.
BACKGROUND: Implementing the Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) program is crucial as a simple protocol for neonatal resuscitation in low-resource healthcare settings to decrease the rate of asphyxia and perinatal mortality by the initial healthcare providers. In addition to training in this program, it is also essential to guarantee the retention of the acquired knowledge and skills.
DESIGN: A quasi-experimental clinical trial study with a single

UNLABELLED: There is only low-certainty evidence on the use of predictive models to assist COVID-19 patient's ICU admission decision-making process. Accumulative evidence suggests that lung ultrasound (LUS) assessment of COVID-19 patients allows accurate bedside evaluation of lung integrity, with the added advantage of repeatability, absence of radiation exposure, reduced risk of virus dissemination, and low cost. Our goal is to assess the performance of a quantified indicator resulting from LUS data compared with standard clinical practice model to predict critical respiratory illness in the

BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common forms of chronic liver disease worldwide. Approximately 20% of individuals with NAFLD develop nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which is associated with increased risk of cirrhosis, portal hypertension, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Intestinal microflora, including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), appear to play an important role in the pathogenesis of the disease, as demonstrated in several clinical and experimental studies, by altering intestinal permeability and allowing bacterial endotoxins to en

Chest wall strapping (CWS) induces breathing at low lung volumes but also increases parenchymal elastic recoil. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that CWS dilates airways via airway-parenchymal interdependence. In 11 subjects (6 healthy and 5 with mild to moderate COPD), pulmonary function tests and lung volumes were obtained in control (baseline) and the CWS state. Control and CWS-CT scans were obtained at 50% of control (baseline) total lung-capacity (TLC). CT lung volumes were analyzed by CT volumetry. If control and CWS-CT volumetry did not differ by more than 25%, airway dimensions

INTRODUCTION: The use of noninvasive positive-pressure mechanical ventilation (NPPV) has been investigated in several acute respiratory failure situations. Questions remain about its benefits when used in weaning patients from invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of bi-level NPPV for patients who fail weaning from IMV.
METHODS: This experimental randomized clinical trial followed up patients undergoing IMV weaning, under ventilation for more than 48 hours, and who failed a spontaneous breathing T-piece trial. Patients with contraindication

The major findings and conclusions of this study are the following: 1. Indirect evidence suggested that nervous afferentation from the cutaneous thermoreceptors and nervous efferentation to the skin blood vessels mediated the 0.01-0.10 Hz thermally entrained response of the oscillations of the forearm skin blood flow in supine and upright subjects. 2. Postural stimulation decreased skin blood flow and oscillations of skin blood flow. The 0.10 Hz thermal stimulation interacted with the postural stimulation by increasing the oscillations of skin blood flow from sitting to standing position on th
