Retinal microvascular abnormalities and 10-year cardiovascular mortality: a population-based case-control study.

PURPOSE: Retinal microvascular abnormalities reflect persistent arteriolar damage from hypertension and independently predict stroke. We examined their associations with long-term cardiovascular mortality. DESIGN: Population-based, nested, case-control study. POPULATION: Cases were Beaver Dam Eye Study participants (age range, 43-84 years) who died of coronary heart disease or stroke between the baseline examination in 1988 to 1990 and 1999 (n = 413). Nearly 3 controls per case were selected from the baseline cohort, frequency-matched on 5-year age intervals and gender (n = 1198). METHODS:

Indoor and peridomestic transmission of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in northwestern Argentina: a retrospective case-control study.

A case-control study was carried out during 1990-1994 to identify risk factors associated with American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) in Santiago del Estero, Argentina. The study subjects consisted of 171 cases and 308 controls matched by age, sex, and place of residence. The analysis was performed by conditional logistic regression. Risk factors found to be significantly associated with ACL were related to indoor transmission (few rooms in the house, dirt floor, and a permanent opening in lieu of a window); peridomestic transmission (presence of a pond or woodland within 150 m of the house an

Respiratory viruses in exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requiring hospitalisation: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AE-COPD) are a common cause of hospital admission. Many exacerbations are believed to be due to upper and/or lower respiratory tract viral infections, but the incidence of these infections in patients with COPD is still undetermined. METHODS: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza A and B, parainfluenza 3, and picornaviruses were detected by nested reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) in upper (nasal lavage) and lower respiratory tract specimens (induced sputum). In a 2:1 case-control set up, 8

Pregnancy-associated breast cancer: a case control and long-term follow-up study in China.

Pregnancy associated (PA) breast cancer is defined when diagnosed during pregnancy or within one year afterwards. To analyze the prognostic factors related to this disease and assess the impact of pregnancy on breast cancer patients, 88 PA breast cancer patients initially treated in the Shanghai Cancer Hospital from 1957 to 1990 were reviewed. A non-PA group including 176 patients individually well matched to the PA group was also analyzed. Univariate analysis suggested prognostic value for clinical tumor size, TNM stage, and breast feeding time among the classic prognostic factors, pregnancy

A retrospective case-control study of horse falls in the sport of horse trials and three-day eventing.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Serious injuries to horses and riders in horse trials (HT) and three-day events (3DE) are usually associated with falls of horses, which invariably involve falls of the riders. Many potential causes for these falls have been discussed. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this case-control study was to investigate the risk factors for horse falls on the cross-country phase of horse trials and three-day events. METHODS: Using retrospective data, significant risk factors identified with unvariable analysis (P value <0.2) were entered into a multivariable logistic regression mod

Case-control study to investigate risk factors for horse falls in hurdle racing in England and Wales.

Between March 1, 2000 and August 31, 2001, a case-control study was conducted on 12 racecourses in England and Wales to identify and quantify the risk factors associated with horse falls in hurdle races. The cases and controls were defined so that variables relating to the horse, the jockey, the race and racecourse, and the jump could be considered. The cases were defined as a jumping effort at a hurdle flight that resulted in a fall, and the controls were defined as a successful jump over a hurdle at any of the 12 racecourses within 14 days before or after the case fall. Conditional logistic

Lifestyles, environmental and phenotypic factors associated with lip cancer: a case-control study in southern Spain.

The aim of this study was to identify factors related to lip cancer (LC) considering individual characteristics and sociodemographic factors. A case-control study was carried out in the province of Granada (Andalusia, southern Spain). The cases were 105 males with squamous-cell carcinoma of the lip, diagnosed between 1987 and 1989 (aged 20-70 years) and identified by means of a population-based Cancer Registry. As controls, a randomised populational sample of 239 males, stratified by age, was used. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that risk factors are lifetime cumulative tobacco c

Firefighting and risk of testicular cancer: results from a German population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: There is some evidence of an elevated risk for testicular cancer among firefighters. METHODS: We performed a population-based case-control study including 269 testicular cancer cases and 797 controls matching on age and region with a special focus on occupational exposures. Job tasks were coded according to the International Standard Classification of Occupations (ISCO 68). We used conditional logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (OR). RESULTS: Three controls (0.4%) and four cases (1.5%) ever worked as firefighters. Firefighters showed an increased odds of testicular canc

[Risk factors of malignant skin melanoma in Italian population: review of results of a case-control study].

Cutaneous melanoma incidence rates are rapidly increasing worldwide, including in the Mediterranean countries. Sunlight exposure has been associated with melanoma, but the mechanisms of UV radiation-induced carcinogenesis is still largely unknown. In mammalian cells, UV radiation induces DNA damage that can be repaired mostly by the nucleotide excision repair system. We summarize here the results of a case-control study conducted at the Bufalini Hospital in Cesena, Italy to assess host and environmental risk factors for melanoma. We recruited 183 incident cutaneous melanoma cases and 179 contr

Risk factors for invasive epithelial ovarian cancer: results from a Swedish case-control study.

This case-control study evaluated reproductive and other factors in relation to epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) risk. Between 1993 and 1995, the authors recruited 655 EOC cases and 3,899 population controls aged 50-74 years who were born in and residents of Sweden. Data were collected through mailed questionnaires. Odds ratios were estimated by unconditional logistic regression. Parity reduced EOC risk (odds ratio = 0.61, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.46, 0.81) for uniparous compared with nulliparous women. The risk of EOC decreased with incomplete pregnancies, early menopausal age, late age

The prognostic role of CD5 negativity in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia: a case-control study.

B cells in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) usually express the CD5 antigen, which appears to participate in the pathogenesis of autoimmune phenomena. However, 7-20% of B-CLL patients are CD5-. The aim of this study was to assess whether CD5 expression could be used as a discriminating factor for two subgroups of B-CLL. Twenty-nine CD5- B-CLL patients were compared in terms of clinico-biological characteristics and survival with a control group of 29 sex- and age-matched, consecutive CD5+ B-CLL subjects. B-CLL was considered to be CD5- when less than 5% of mononuclear cells expressed CD5 af
