A game-theoretic approach to valuating toxoplasmosis vaccination strategies.

The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite often found in wild and domestic cats, and it is the cause of the disease toxoplasmosis. More than 60 million people in the United States carry the parasite, and the Centers for Disease Control have placed toxoplasmosis in their disease classification group Neglected Parasitic Infections as one of five parasitic diseases targeted as priorities for public health action. In recent years, there has been significant progress toward the development of a practical vaccine, so vaccination programs may soon be a viable approach to controlling the disease.

Isolation, Molecular Characterization, and Pathogenicity Evaluation of a Genotype GI Feline Calicivirus Isolate.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a highly heterogeneous pathogen and a major cause of feline upper respiratory tract disease, highlighting the need for continuous surveillance of its genetic diversity and pathogenic characteristics. In this study, we isolated and comprehensively characterized a newly isolated FCV strain, HN/ZZ/2025, from cats at a feline trading market in Zhengzhou, China, and systematically evaluated its molecular features, in vitro replication characteristics, physicochemical properties, and pathogenicity in cats. Phylogenetic analysis classified HN/ZZ/2025 as genotype GI. The is

Sensitization to food and inhalant allergens in relation to age and wheeze among children with atopic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is common in children; however, persistence of AD with or without asthma is less common. Longitudinal studies remain limited in their ability to characterize how IgE antibody responses evolve in AD, and their relationship with asthma. OBJECTIVE: To use a cross-sectional study design of children with active AD to analyse age-related differences in IgE antibodies and relation to wheeze. METHODS: IgE antibodies to food and inhalant allergens were measured in children with active AD (5 months to 15 years of age, n = 66), with and without history of wheeze. RES

A latex cryptococcal antigen agglutination test for diagnosis and monitoring of therapy for cryptococcosis.

A latex cryptococcal antigen agglutination test (LCAT) was performed on sera obtained during the first 14 days of treatment from 58 animals (46 cats, 9 dogs, 2 koalas and 1 long billed corella) with cryptococcosis. The same commercial kit was used for all samples, and most serum samples were treated with pronase before testing. Sera from all 58 cases tested positive with the qualitative LCAT protocol (using undiluted sera), while sera from all 26 cats without cryptococcosis tested negative. Titres determined using the quantitative protocol ranged from 1 to > or = 131 072 (median titre between

Symptoms improvement and lung function benefits of fixed triple therapy with beclomethasone/formoterol/glycopyrronium inhalation powder in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD: outcomes of the Bulgarian arm of the RESPONSE study.

BACKGROUND: The fixed triple beclomethasone dipropionate/formoterol fumarate/glycopyrronium (BDP/FF/GB) therapy is available in both pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI) and dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulations for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment. While the pMDI form has been extensively investigated in pivotal trials and real-world studies, real-world data on the DPI (88/5/9 μg) formulation remain limited. The RESPONSE study assessed the real-world effectiveness of BDP/FF/GB inhalation powder in a cohort of moderate-to-severe COPD patients uncontrolled with dual com

Characteristics and outcomes of ICU patients with sepsis transmitted by cats and dogs: the PETSEPSIS multicentre retrospective observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Millions of households have cats or dogs as pets, and infections due to bites or scratches are increasing, with the most common pathogens being Pasteurella spp., Bartonella spp., Capnocytophaga spp, and Francisella tularensis. The objective of this study was to describe patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for infection transmitted by cats or dogs, as well as their outcomes. METHODS: The retrospective multicentre observational cohort study PETSEPSIS included consecutive adults admitted to 46 ICUs in France between 2009 and 2019 for sepsis due to cat or dog bites and/o

A feline case of multiple myeloma treated with bortezomib.

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) is an uncommon neoplasm in cats. There is no established standard of treatment due to the rare occurrence of this disease in cats. Bortezomib is a proteasome inhibitor that serves as the first-line drug for MM in humans, but its effectiveness currently is unknown in feline MM. We present here the case report of a feline MM that exhibited a favorable response to bortezomib. CASE PRESENTATION: The case was an 11-year-old non-castrated male domestic cat with light-chain MM presenting with clinical symptoms (anorexia, fatigue, and vomiting), mild azotemia, and pa

Studies on plague in the eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

Investigations were carried out in the area of a human plague outbreak in March 1982 at Coega in the eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Trapping revealed that rodent populations were high owing primarily to a population increase of the four-striped mouse, Rhabdomys pumilio. Flea populations were low and had been declining in the eastern Cape Province since October 1981. The results of a serological survey from March to October 1982 showed haemagglutinating antibody to Yersinia pestis in 0.35% of 5938 dog sera and 0.53% of 1132 small mammal sera. Plague antibody was detected in two small ma

Perplexing pneumonia: Pasteurella lung infection.

Pasteurella multocida, commonly found in the oropharyngeal flora of cats and dogs, typically causes soft tissue infections following animal bites or scratches. Respiratory infections due to Pasteurella are rare and usually occur in individuals with predisposing factors, such as chronic lung disease or immunosuppression. We present an unusual case of an elderly male who developed a Pasteurella lung infection after his cat licked his dentures. The patient, with no significant history of lung disease or immunosuppression, presented with fever, cough and dyspnoea. The diagnosis was confirmed via b

Bartonella Neuroretinitis with Initial Seronegativity and an Absent Macular Star: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Cat-scratch disease (CSD) is an infectious disease caused by Bartonella henselae, presenting with fever and lymphadenopathy following contact with felines. The ocular manifestations include neuroretinitis, characterised by optic nerve swelling and a macular star. Case Presentation: We discuss a case of neuroretinitis that presented atypically, without a macular star. There was an initial suspicion of Bartonella, but the serology was negative. Our patient was eventually empirically treated for infective neuroretinitis based on a positive contact history (recently scratched by one of his three p

Cerebral epidural empyema due to Bartonella henselae: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cat scratch disease frequently involves a benign, self-limited disease. Neurological forms associated with Bartonella henselae are uncommon, consisting mostly in neuroretinitis, encephalitis and meningitis. Cerebral epidural empyema has never described. CASE PRESENTATION: An adult patient was hospitalized for isolated headaches. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) identified typical features of cerebral epidural empyema. The diagnosis of B. henselae was performed incidentally by 16S rDNA gene sequencing on the abscess fluid, and confirmed by specific qPCR. We report here the first ca

An epidemic of sporotrichosis in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: epidemiological aspects of a series of cases.

The first epidemic of sporotrichosis in humans as a result of zoonotic transmission was identified in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1998. A cross-sectional study was conducted applying questionnaires to patients seen in 2002 at Evandro Chagas Clinical Research Institute, Fiocruz, with a confirmed diagnosis of sporotrichosis. A total of 73 dwellings were studied, where 255 individuals, including 94 patients and 161 healthy household contacts, lived with 133 cats with sporotrichosis. Most dwellings were houses with 83% having complete basic sanitation. Among patients, there was a predominance of wo

[Visceral and cutaneous larva migrans].

The syndrome of visceral larva migrans was described for the first time in 1952 by Beaver. He demonstrated that the presence of nematodes larvae, particularly in the liver, were those of Toxocara canis and T. cati. Baylisascaris procyonis, the common racoon ascarid in the U.S.A. can also cause serious diseases in human. Digestive and respiratory clinical symptoms are usually moderate, however severe disease resulting from invasion of the myocardium or the brain has been reported. A blood hypereosinophilia is usually present the first few years after infection. Diagnosis uses serological method

Corneal endothelium in mucopolysaccharide storage disorders. Morphologic studies in animal models.

In the systemic mucopolysaccharidoses (MPS) in animals, corneal clouding resulted from storage of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in stromal keratocytes. The corneal epithelium was normal (MPS VI and VII) or minimally affected (MPS I), and stromal edema was not a feature even though the corneal endothelium demonstrated variable pathology. The MPS I (cat) cornea showed endothelial cells with large numbers of secondary lysosomal inclusions that were vacuolated or had a granular matrix. The endothelium was uniformly affected, but was not markedly hypertrophied. In contrast, the MPS VI (cat) cornea showe

Toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis--a historical review and current concepts.

Toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis usually presents during the first three decades of life as a consequence of intra-uterine infection by Toxoplasma gondii. The ingestion of infected undercooked meat, or foodstuffs contaminated by infected cat faeces, constitute the primary sources of infection for the non-immune mother. It is thought that following congenital infection, Toxoplasma cysts remain dormant in otherwise normal retina and that acute retinochoroiditis is the result of reactivation of the parasite, perhaps by cyst rupture. Treatment is indicated for sight threatening disease and comprises

Rabies prevention in primary care. A four-step approach.

Although most physicians in the United States have not seen a person with rabies, the primary care physician is often confronted with a patient who has been bitten by an animal capable of transmitting rabies virus. Rabies is almost always transmitted by a bite; licks and other nonbite exposures hardly ever cause the disease. The control of rabies in domestic animals has greatly reduced the risk of human disease following the bite of a dog or cat, but rabies in wild animals (especially skunks and raccoons) remains a constant threat. By obtaining epidemiologic information about animal rabies in

Toxoplasmosis.

Recent research has shown that Toxoplasma gondii, the cause of human toxoplasmosis, is a protozoan close to the genus Isospora, whose life cycle involves cats as the definitive host, and other mammals, including man, and birds as intermediate hosts. Cats shed oocysts in their faeces; these are infective to the intermediate hosts when ingested. But the non-felid intermediate hosts can also become infected by eating other intermediate hosts. Probably most human infections occur in this manner and result from eating raw or insufficiently cooked meats. Most people become infected during their life
