Exploring the feasibility and effectiveness of a naturalistic family centered intervention to enhance early interactions in toddlers with Down syndrome.

This study analyses the feasibility and effectiveness of BabyMICARE, a manualised intervention programme aimed at improving the interactions between caregivers and infants and toddlers with Down syndrome. The programme's goal is to enhance caregivers' sensitivity and reduce directivity during early interactions, particularly during play and daily routines. A pre-test and post-test design was used with 40 dyads of infants with Down syndrome and their caregivers, who were divided into a control group (n = 20) and an intervention group (n = 20), based on baseline scores in key interaction subscal

Exploring language profiles with a focus on pragmatic skills in children with orofacial clefts.

This study explored language profiles in a sample of Norwegian children born with orofacial cleft. A total of 38 children, median age 71 months, were assessed by the Children's Communication Checklist Second Edition. Altogether 36.8% was identified with language impairment. The results showed that the group mean was lower than the normative mean on all pragmatic subscales as well as on the composite score, indicating that impaired pragmatic skills are common in children with OFC. However, great variability was found within the group with individual results ranging from severely impaired to wel

Height growth of Mexican boys by geographic region: an evaluation based on nationally representative data of ENSANUT 2012 and 2018.

Existing research on human growth in Mexico is regionally focused, creating a gap in the understanding of growth patterns of children and adolescents at national level and regional variation. The objective of the present study was to characterize the height growth curve of the Mexican population by geographic area and to cluster the states of the Mexican Republic according to their somatic maturation characteristics, based on a national representative sample of boys. Data on age, height, socioeconomic level, and geographic area of 18,219 boys were obtained from the National Health and Nutritio

Prioritizing family-centered developmental care: insights from parents of children with critical congenital heart disease: a qualitative study.

As survivors of early cardiac surgery are at high risk of neurodevelopmental impairments, systematic health observations of children with critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) throughout childhood are recommended to enable early diagnosis and offer interventions to optimize neurodevelopment. A qualitative study using thematic analysis was performed to explore parents' concerns, experiences, and needs regarding the development and received developmental care of their child (0-10 years) during hospital admission and beyond. Data were collected using semi-structured online interviews with 20 p

Should We Stop Using Lexical Diversity Measures in Children's Language Sample Analysis?

PURPOSE: Prior work has identified weaknesses in commonly used indices of lexical diversity in spoken language samples, such as type-token ratio (TTR) due to sample size and elicitation variation, we explored whether TTR and other diversity measures, such as number of different words/100 (NDW), vocabulary diversity (VocD), and the moving average TTR would be more sensitive to child age and clinical status (typically developing [TD] or developmental language disorder [DLD]) if samples were obtained from standardized prompts. METHOD: We utilized archival data from the norming samples of the Tes

Joint Developmental Trajectories of Conduct Problems and Hyperactivity/Inattention: Antecedent Risk Markers for Group Membership.

This study investigated joint trajectories of conduct problems and hyperactivity/inattention from age three to nine in a cohort of 7,507 children in Ireland (50.3% males; 84.9% Irish). The parent-reported Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire was used to collect information on conduct problems (CP) and hyperactivity/inattention (HI). Information regarding risk markers was collected when participants were nine-months-old via parent report and standardised assessments. Using a person-centred approach (i.e., group-based multi trajectory modelling), six trajectories were identified: no CP/low H

Characterizing subdomains of insistence on sameness in autistic youth.

Insistence on sameness (IS) encompasses a range of behavioral patterns, including resistance to change, routines, and ritualized behaviors, that can be present across social and non-social contexts. Given the breadth of behaviors encompassed by IS, it is important to determine whether this domain is best conceptualized and measured as uni- or a multi-dimensional construct. Therefore, the current study aimed to characterize the structure of IS and explore potentially distinct of patterns of associations between identified IS factors and relevant correlates, including age, sex, IQ, anxiety, soci

Neonatal Leptin Levels Predict the Early Childhood Developmental Assessment Scores of Preterm Infants.

Preterm infants have low circulating levels of leptin, a key trophic hormone that influences growth and development. While the clinical importance of prematurity-associated leptin deficiency is undefined, recent preclinical and clinical investigations have shown that targeted enteral leptin supplementation can normalize neonatal leptin levels. We tested the hypothesis that, independent of growth velocity, prematurity-related neonatal leptin deficiency predicts adverse cardiovascular and neurodevelopmental outcomes. In a planned 2-year longitudinal follow-up of 83 preterm infants born at 22 to

Characteristics of children on the autism spectrum who benefit the most from receiving intervention in inclusive versus specialised early childhood education settings.

This study examined the factors associated with social-communicative outcomes for children on the autism spectrum receiving early intervention in inclusive versus specialised early childhood education programmes. Fifty-eight preschool-aged children randomly assigned to receive the Group-Early Start Denver Model (G-ESDM) in either inclusive or specialised (i.e., autism-specific) classrooms across one calendar year showed similar outcomes at group mean-level across measures of communication and social behaviour. We examined factors moderating outcomes across settings. Novel moderation analyses r

Affordances for Motor Development in the Home Environment for Young Children with and without CHARGE Syndrome.

Affordances in the home environment are critical to early motor development. Currently, the home environment has not been examined in children with deafblindness or severe disabilities. The present study examined differences in, and relationships between, the home environment and motor development in children with and without CHARGE syndrome. CHARGE syndrome is a low-incidence, complex disorder with sensory and motor impairments. Participants included 28 parents of children with CHARGE syndrome and 32 parents of children without disabilities. Children with CHARGE syndrome achieved motor milest

Birth weight for gestational age, recovery of growth and anthropometric profile of pre-school children born full term: a follow-up study.

INTRODUCTION: Being born small for gestational age (SGA) implies an increase in the childhood morbidity and mortality rates, in addition to being related to changes in the pattern of growth and body composition, which may be associated with the development of risk factors linked to metabolic diseases. Aim of the study: To describe the development of anthropomorphic indicators of children born at full term, small (SGA) or appropriate for gestational age (AGA), up to the sixth month of life, and again when they reached school-age. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study, with

Trends in child growth failure among children under five years of age in Ethiopia: Evidence from the 2000 to 2016 Demographic and Health Surveys.

INTRODUCTION: In a majority of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), levels of child growth failure (CGF) have steadily declined since 2000. However, some countries show a different trend. Despite continued investment from the government of Ethiopia as well as donors, CGF levels are still high in Ethiopia. This study aimed to assess trends in CGF and associated sociodemographic, economic and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) factors from 2000 to 2016 in Ethiopia. METHODS: Data were taken from four rounds of the Ethiopia Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS). Children aged between 0 to

Prospective Association between Childhood Behavioral Inhibition and Anxiety: a Meta-Analysis.

Behavioral inhibition (BI) is a risk factor for anxiety. However, the estimates of the strength of this association vary widely. In addition, while BI is a strong predictor of social anxiety disorder (SAD), its association with other anxiety disorders is unclear. The current study sought to establish the relationship between BI and anxiety and to quantify this association for a range of anxiety disorders. We searched PsycInfo, PubMed and Embase for articles published before May 18th, 2019 using search terms for BI, anxiety and prospective study design. We selected articles which assessed the p

Lowering Urinary Phthalate Metabolite Concentrations among Children by Reducing Contaminated Dust in Housing Units: A Randomized Controlled Trial and Observational Study.

Dust in homes can contain phthalates that may adversely affect child development, but whether residential interventions and dust removal can prevent children's exposure to phthalates is unknown. We quantified the influence of a residential lead hazard intervention and dust control on children's urinary phthalate metabolite concentrations. Between 2003 and 2006, The Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study randomized 355 pregnant women to receive an intervention to reduce either residential lead or injury hazards before delivery. We quantified eight urinary phthalate metabol

The spatiotemporal organization of episodic memory and its disruption in a neurodevelopmental disorder.

Recent theories of episodic memory (EM) posit that the hippocampus provides a spatiotemporal framework necessary for representing events. If such theories hold true, then does the development of EM in children depend on the ability to first bind spatial and temporal information? And does this ability rely, at least in part, on normal hippocampal function? We investigated the development of EM in children 2-8 years of age (Study 1) and its impairment in Williams Syndrome, a genetic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by visuospatial deficits and irregular hippocampal function, (Study 2) b

Predictors of childhood trajectories of overt and indirect aggression: An interdisciplinary approach.

The aim of this study was to advance our understanding of the development of aggression in boys and girls by testing a model combining insights from both evolutionary theory and developmental psychology. A sample of 744 children (348 girls) between six and 13 years old was recruited in schools with high deprivation indices. Half of the sample (N = 372; 40.1% girls) had received special educational services for behavioral and/or socio-emotional problems. Two trajectories for overt aggression and two trajectories for indirect aggression were identified and binomial logistic regressions were used
