Trends in childhood disease.

Child mortality has declined remarkably during the last decades. While neonatal disorders, diarrhoea, pneumonia, and malaria as well as being underweight account for most of the child deaths worldwide, children's health discussions in Europe and the USA focus on other issues such as asthma, neurodevelopmental disorders, male genital malformations, and childhood cancer. There is clear evidence of increasing rates of asthma in various countries during the last decades, although rates in some countries may now have stabilised or even decline as recent UK data indicate. Although an increase in the

Relationship between body size and severity of dengue hemorrhagic fever among children aged 0-14 years.

A hospital based case-control study was conducted from October 2002 to November 2003 among children aged 0-14 years at Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health (Children's Hospital), Bangkok, Thailand. This study focused on body size and severity of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in children. One hundred five patients diagnosed as having DHF grade III or IV were the cases and 105 diagnosed as having DHF grade I or II were controls. They were matched at a ratio of 1:1 by their gender and age (within 5 years). Normal growth charts were used to differentiate child body size into normal, t

Elimination of HIV infection in infants in Europe--challenges and demand for response.

Effective interventions for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection now exist and where these are fully implemented, MTCT rates of 1-2% are achievable. Virtual elimination of HIV in infants by 2010 has therefore been set as a goal for European region. There are, however, many challenges. The eastern European and central Asian countries are facing the fastest growing HIV epidemic in the world with a dramatic increase in numbers of HIV-positive pregnancies and new HIV infected infants. Nevertheless, the prevalence of HIV among pregnan

Mothers' health following youth police stops.

Research documents that criminal justice contact, such as incarceration, impairs health among family members of those experiencing the contact. Yet little is known about the health consequences of vicarious exposure to another common type of criminal justice contact, police stops. In the present study, we examined the association between youth police stops and mothers' health. We used data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a cohort of urban children born around the turn of the 21st century and followed through adolescence (2014 to 2017), to estimate the association between y

The application of chatbots in perinatal mental health interventions: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal mental health problems are prevalent during pregnancy and the postpartum period and can have substantial consequences for both mothers and infants. Chatbot-based interventions represent a promising and scalable approach to perinatal mental health support. However, the evidence base remains heterogeneous and has not been systematically mapped. This scoping review aims to synthesise existing research on chatbot-based interventions for perinatal mental health, focusing on study characteristics, intervention features, outcomes and implementation challenges. METHODS AND ANA

Understanding Maternal Health Outcomes Among Latina Mothers of Children With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: The Roles of Social Determinants and Sociocultural Contexts.

Latinx families of children with disabilities are at disproportionally high risk of adverse health outcomes, including overweight, obesity, and depression. Research on specific social determinants and sociocultural factors that impact their health remains limited. In this study, we examined how social determinants of health (SDOH) and sociocultural contexts are related to maternal health outcomes in a sample of 105 Latina mothers of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the United States. Mothers were interviewed by phone or video conference call and were asked abo

The second-order effects that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on pediatric populations.

INTRODUCTION: SARS-CoV-2 can have long-term health consequences that persist beyond acute infection. While this is evident in adults and the elderly, the impact on children and adolescents remains under recognized. Here we navigate the second-order post-acute effects that the COVID-19 has had on the pediatric populations, with the exception of the mental health implication of social restrictions. AREAS COVERED: We outline common scenarios related with SARS-CoV-2 infection encountered in pediatric clinical practice, such as in the Multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C), Long Covid, neurolog

Proposed Physiological Mechanisms Underlying the Association between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Mental Health Conditions: A Narrative Review.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs; e.g., physical abuse) can impact lifelong mental health both directly and intergenerationally, with effects transmitted from the parent to the child. Several physiological mechanisms have been proposed to explain the impacts of ACEs on mental health. The purpose of this narrative review was to synthesize and critique the peer-reviewed literature on physiological mechanisms proposed to underlie the impacts of ACEs on mental health, specifically: (1) hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis functioning, (2) inflammation, (3) genetic inheritance and differential su

It Is Complicated: The Medico-Social Journey of an Undocumented Pregnant Adolescent.

Adolescent pregnancies are a global health problem with over 16 million children born to this age group globally. Adolescent females also represent almost half of all adolescent global migrants. Adolescent pregnancy by itself is associated with poor health care access and morbidities; the additional risk of social insecurity in the case of undocumented adolescent migrants leads to higher risks for the mother and newborn. According to the CDC, adolescents comprise half of all new sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including reported primary and secondary syphilis. Our case highlights the rela

[Community health and social action in the epidemiologic control of infantile trachoma, Spain (1932-1939)].

Within the context of the endemic trachoma that affected different regions of Spain until the 1960s, this paper analyses the epidemiological determinants of child trachoma and its treatment, based on a preventive care model which incorporated the concept of community health that took shape during the interwar period. Early detection of cases, together with preventive measures, education, therapy and inspections, such as those carried out by visiting nurses, all helped to control the disease. Our results reaffirm the validity of the horizontal intervention strategies used for improving the sani

Reducing Intergenerational Poverty.

How can the United States reduce the number of children in our country who, after growing up in families with incomes below the poverty line, remain poor as adults? This article summarizes key conclusions of a 2024 report issued by the Committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on Policies and Programs to Reduce Intergenerational Poverty. The committee sought to identify evidence-based policies and programs directed at low-income children, their families, or their neighborhoods that could reduce children's chances of remaining low-income as adults. The committee

[A PhD completed. Preventing dental caries through collaboration of healthy child programmes and oral healthcare providers].

Despite measures, caries in children continues to be a problem. Caries is seen more often in young children with a low socio-economic status than in children with a high socio-economic status. The aim of this PhD research was to find ways to improve preventive oral healthcare for all children. This was achieved by collecting scientific evidence in 3 research components: targeting, effectiveness and implementation of preventive oral healthcare. Analysis of the data revealed that, despite a system fully covering oral healthcare for children, there still are disparities in children s oral health

Establishment of the South-Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority Resource Center for Children with Prenatal Alcohol/Drug Exposure.

This paper presents a new initiative in the South-Eastern Health Region of Norway to establish a regional resource center focusing on services for children and adolescents aged 2-18 years with prenatal exposure to alcohol or other drugs. In Norway, the prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum (FAS) is not known but has been estimated to be between 1 and 2 children per 1000 births, while the prevalence of prenatal exposure to illicit drugs is unknown. The resource center is the first of its kind in Scandinavia and will have three main objectives: (1) provide hospital staff, community health and chi

The reported health and functioning of children maltreated while in family foster care.

The ability to assess accurately risk factors for maltreatment while in family foster care is essential for developing prevention and intervention strategies. Yet information about children involved in maltreatment episodes while in foster care is severely limited. This correlational study reports on characteristics, health, and functioning parameters of all 78 children with substantiated maltreatment reports between 1984-1988 in an urban foster care program as compared to a random sample of 229 nonmaltreated children in foster care in the same time period. Almost 50% of the substantiated malt

Perceived changes in mothers' outcomes following a pilot parenting program for couples with young children in Mwanza, Tanzania: A longitudinal qualitative study.

There is growing interest in engaging not only mothers but also fathers in parenting programs to improve nurturing care, psychosocial support, and early childhood development. However, few studies have explored how mothers perceive and benefit from participating in parenting interventions alongside their partners. This study explored mothers' experiences during the pilot implementation of Familia Bora, a couples-based parenting program delivered in six communities in Mwanza, Tanzania (July-November 2024). In-depth interviews were conducted with mothers at baseline, midline, and endline using b

Associations between aromatic amines and oxidative stress biomarkers among pregnant women in the San Francisco Bay Area of California.

BACKGROUND: Aromatic amines (AAs) have rarely been studied in the context of pregnancy despite their ubiquity and known toxicity. To our knowledge, no study has investigated the relationship between AAs and F2-isoprostanes, which are linked to adverse maternal and child health outcomes. METHODS: Our analytic sample included 176 participants from the Chemicals in Our Bodies prospective birth cohort. Thirty-six AAs and four F2-isoprostanes (biomarkers of oxidative stress) were measured in mid-pregnancy urine. We focused on six AAs that were detected in at least 50% of participants and calculate
