Sexually transmitted diseases pose a significant problem for children who have been sexually abused. The pattern of sexually transmitted diseases in this group reflects their changing pattern in the community at large. The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases in sexual abuse victims is significant although it depends on a number of factors, including sexually transmitted disease prevalence in the community, the organism, and the type of abuse. The transmission route of most common sexually transmitted diseases beyond the neonatal period is accepted as sexual abuse, although the possibil

Vaginal discharges in prepubertal girls can be categorized under two broad headings--those with specific microbiological causes and, in the absence of such, those that are nonspecific in origin. For specific vulvovaginitis, treatment should be tailored to the findings on cultures, wet mounts, KOH, or other slide preparations. For the sexually transmissible organisms resulting in a vaginal discharge, thorough social service investigation should be undertaken in addition to appropriate antibiotic therapy. When a microbiological cause cannot be found and a foreign body has been ruled out, one is

BACKGROUND: As syphilis rates have increased globally, chancroid has dramatically declined as a cause of genital ulcer disease (GUD).
METHODS: We recruited patients aged ≥18 years presenting to a sexually transmitted infection clinic with GUD from Lilongwe, Malawi, from November 2019 through April 2022. Lesion exudates were tested by darkfield microscopy (DFM) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Treponema pallidum (TP) and by PCR for Haemophilus ducreyi (HD), herpes simplex virus, and Chlamydia trachomatis. We evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of DFM relative to TP PCR, the distri

The United States has one of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among high-income countries, with women-particularly young Black women-bearing the greatest burden. Gendered power dynamics are a driver of women's STI risk, yet most research has focused on couple relationships, rather than the structural gender inequalities that shape power imbalances. This study investigates the extent to which the gender pay gap, a key indicator of structural sexism, is associated with women's sexual health outcomes in the US. Drawing on theories of household bargaining and gendered po

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) place a substantial burden on outpatient health care and are a key focus for antimicrobial stewardship due to rising antimicrobial resistance. Suboptimal treatment can result in ongoing transmission, reinfection and complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease. Evaluating prescribing quality is essential to improve patient care and support stewardship efforts. This review synthesises evidence on antimicrobial prescribing quality for STIs and identifies gaps to inform targeted interventions for this unique but critical setting. This PRISMA-ScR scopin

Over the past two decades, the global incidence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis have increased significantly, particularly among cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). This rise in STIs has spurred interest in new preventive measures, including doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP). Clinical trials in the United States and France have demonstrated the effectiveness of DoxyPEP in reducing both chlamydia and syphilis incidence among MSM and TGW; although, its efficacy against gonorrhea remains limited,

The high incidence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and an unmet need for modern contraception resulting in a high unintended pregnancy rate, are major problems in reproductive health. The concept of multipurpose prevention technology (MPT) was introduced following the failure of several leading microbicide candidates to prevent human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) transmission in large clinical trials in the early 2000s. MPTs are defined as products designed to simultaneously prevent at least two of the following conditions: unintended pregnancy, HIV-1, or other

BackgroundDiagnoses of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have increased in France since the 2000s. The main strategy to control STI transmission is recommending/facilitating access to condom use, testing, and antibiotic treatments.AimThis study analyses the evolution of STI testing in the private sector in France from 2006 to 2020.MethodsNational health insurance reimbursement data were used to determine numbers and rates of individuals aged ≥ 15 years tested for diagnoses of chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis in the private sector in France and to describe their evolution from

OBJECTIVES: In the Netherlands, general practitioners (GPs) perform two-thirds of sexually transmitted infection (STI) consultations and diagnose one-third of HIV infections. GPs are, therefore, a key group to target to improve provider-initiated HIV testing. We describe the design and implementation of an educational intervention to improve HIV testing by Amsterdam GPs and explore trends in GPs' testing behaviour.
METHODS: Interactive sessions on HIV and STI using graphical audit and feedback started in 2015. Participating GPs developed improvement plans that were evaluated in follow-up sess

BACKGROUND: Little is known about population-level sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing in emergency departments (EDs). We sought to explore STD testing patterns in EDs in a large, urban metroplex in North Texas, a high prevalence region.
METHODS: Emergency department claims data were extracted from the Dallas Fort Worth Hospital Council databank for patients attending 54 EDs in 4 counties (Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, and Denton) who were tested for an STD during an ED visit between July 2014 and June 2015. We analyzed patterns of testing for 3 types of STD tests: (1) combined gonorrhea an

BACKGROUND: Despite recommendations that sexually active men who have sex with men be regularly tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and that testing reflect anatomical sites of potential exposure, regular testing is not widely performed, especially for rectal STIs. As such, little is known about the prevalence of rectal and urethral STIs among young men who have sex with men (YMSM).
METHODS: The current study examined the prevalence and risk factors for rectal and urethral chlamydia and gonorrhea in a sample of 1113 YMSM ages 18 to 29 years (mean, 24.07 years). Before participat

BACKGROUND: Most economic evaluations of interventions to prevent or control curable sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as chlamydia, have focused on the longer-term health impacts avoided. However, there is a range of qualitative evidence suggesting that those who think that they might have an STI and/or undergo testing can experience impacts on their quality of life (QoL) at the testing and diagnosis stage. A systematic review was undertaken to identify and evaluate studies that have measured QoL and sexual health for women undergoing testing and screening for chlamydia.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian women may perceive themselves to be at lower risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and use reproductive health care at lower rates compared with heterosexual women. Therefore, STIs in sexual minority women may go undetected. The prevalence and risk factors of urogenital STIs in women of different sexual orientations were investigated.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of women attending the STI clinic of Howard Brown Health Center in Chicago, Illinois. Women were eligible for inclusion in this study if they reported a sexual identity and were screened for

OBJECTIVES: Male sex workers (MSW) are thought to be at increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (STI), however, limited comparative data with other groups are available. Disparities among MSWs by migrant status may also exist. Using newly available, cross-sectional surveillance data, the characteristics of MSWs and other male genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic attendees can be investigated.
METHODS: Demographic characteristics, STI prevalence and service usage among MSWs and other male attendees between 1 January and 31 December 2011 were compared using logistic regression.

BACKGROUND: Given the growing popularity of administrative data for health research, information on the differences and similarities between administrative data and customary data sources (e.g. surveillance) will help to inform the use of administrative data in the field of sexually transmissible infections (STIs). The objective of this study was to compare the incidence rates of three nonviral STIs from a large health insurance administrative database (MarketScan) with surveillance data.
METHODS: We computed and compared STI rates for 2005-10 from MarketScan and national surveillance data fo

BACKGROUND: In many countries, the prevalence of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among men who have sex with men (MSM) is high. We undertook a systematic review to identify clinic-based strategies for increasing screening and detection of bacterial STIs among MSM.
METHODS: We reviewed studies that compared screening for or detection of gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis in the presence and the absence of an intervention. The primary end points were STI screening, rescreening, or detection rates.
RESULTS: Of 1809 studies identified, 8 fulfilled the inclusion criteria; of thes

Several commercial methods exist for the molecular detection of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae in clinical samples. Here we evaluated the performance characteristics of the newly FDA-cleared Abbott RealTime CT/NG assay (where "CT" stands for Chlamydia trachomatis and "NG" stands for Neisseria gonorrhoeae) that uses the automated m2000 molecular platform. Results were compared to those of the Roche Cobas Amplicor CT/NG assay. A total of 926 cervical swab, 45 female urine, 6 male urethral swab, and 407 male urine specimens from 1,384 patients were examined. After resolving all R
