The association between temperature and alcohol- and substance-related disorder hospital visits in New York State.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists on how temperature increases are associated with hospital visits from alcohol- and substance-related disorders, despite plausible behavioral and physiological pathways. METHODS: In the present study, we implemented a case-crossover design, which controls for seasonal patterns, long-term trends, and non- or slowly-varying confounders, with distributed lag non-linear temperature terms (0-6 days) to estimate associations between daily ZIP Code-level temperature and alcohol- and substance-related disorder hospital visit rates in New York State during 1995-2014.

Acute bioaccumulation and chronic toxicity of olivine in the marine amphipod Gammarus locusta.

Active atmospheric carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is needed at a gigaton scale in the next decades to keep global warming below 1.5 °C. Coastal enhanced silicate weathering (CESW) aims to increase natural ocean carbon sequestration via chemical weathering of finely ground olivine (MgxFe(1-x)SiO4) rich rock dispersed in dynamic coastal environments. However, the environmental safety of the technique remains in question due to the high Ni and Cr content of olivine. Therefore, we investigated the short term bioaccumulation and chronic toxicity of olivine in the marine amphipod Gammarus locusta. Acu

Human Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in North Africa and Its Threats to Public Health: A Statistical Study Focused on Djelfa (Algeria).

Cutaneous leishmaniasis, the most common form of leishmaniasis, causes long-term skin lesions on exposed areas of the skin. It is caused by a protozoan parasite belonging to the genus Leishmania and is transmitted via infected phlebotomine sand flies. In North Africa, particularly Algeria, the disease represents a major public health problem. This retrospective study, which focuses on the agropastoral region of Djelfa (central Algeria) during a period of 16 years, from 2006 to 2021, is part of the surveillance of cutaneous leishmaniasis to identify the key factors favouring its probable spread

Detection of Wuchereria bancrofti in human blood samples and mosquitoes in Matayos, Busia County-Kenya.

Lymphatic filariasis is a mosquito borne disease which leads to abnormal painful enlarged body parts, severe disability and social stigma. We screened Wuchereria bancrofti in Matayos constituency in Busia County. Blood samples were collected from 23 villages selected purposively based on clinical case reports. Finger prick and/or venous blood sampling and mosquito collections was carried out. Antigenaemia and filarial DNA prevalence were determined. Infection rates on mosquito pools were estimated and SPSS version 26 was used for descriptive statistics analysis. A total of 262 participants wer

Ecological factors shaping the ectoparasite community assembly of the Azara's Grass Mouse, Akodon azarae (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

Parasites are integral members of the global biodiversity. They are useful indicators of environmental stress, food web structure and diversity. Ectoparasites have the potential to transmit vector-borne diseases of public health and veterinary importance and to play an important role in the regulation and evolution of host populations. The interlinkages between hosts, parasites and the environment are complex and challenging to study, leading to controversial results. Most previous studies have been focused on one or two parasite groups, while hosts are often co-infected by different taxa. The

[French research organization on emerging infectious diseases: From REACTing to ANRS emerging infectious diseases].

Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) can be responsible for epidemics or even pandemics that disrupt societies and cause national and international crises. In our globalized world, anarchic urbanization, ecosystem disruptions (deforestation, creation of dams…), changes in crop and livestock farming conditions, the increasing availability of air transport, population displacement and climate change are all factors that favor the occurrence and spread of emerging or re-emerging pathogens such as SARS-Cov, MERS-CoV, Ebola, Zika, influenza, or more recently SARS-CoV-2 and Monkeypox. States, regiona

An economic evaluation of Wolbachia deployments for dengue control in Vietnam.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is a major public health challenge and a growing problem due to climate change. The release of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with the intracellular bacterium Wolbachia is a novel form of vector control against dengue. However, there remains a need to evaluate the benefits of such an intervention at a large scale. In this paper, we evaluate the potential economic impact and cost-effectiveness of scaled Wolbachia deployments as a form of dengue control in Vietnam-targeted at the highest burden urban areas. METHODS: Ten settings within Vietnam were identified as priority

Inhibition of 3-Hydroxykynurenine Transaminase from Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae: A Mosquito-Specific Target to Combat the Transmission of Arboviruses.

Arboviral infections such as Zika, chikungunya, dengue, and yellow fever pose significant health problems globally. The population at risk is expanding with the geographical distribution of the main transmission vector of these viruses, the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The global spreading of this mosquito is driven by human migration, urbanization, climate change, and the ecological plasticity of the species. Currently, there are no specific treatments for Aedes-borne infections. One strategy to combat different mosquito-borne arboviruses is to design molecules that can specifically inhibit a crit

California Serogroup Viruses in a Changing Canadian Arctic: A Review.

The Arctic is warming at four times the global rate, changing the diversity, activity and distribution of vectors and associated pathogens. While the Arctic is not often considered a hotbed of vector-borne diseases, Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV) and Snowshoe Hare virus (SSHV) are mosquito-borne zoonotic viruses of the California serogroup endemic to the Canadian North. The viruses are maintained by transovarial transmission in vectors and circulate among vertebrate hosts, both of which are not well characterized in Arctic regions. While most human infections are subclinical or mild, serious cas

Genotype-phenotype correlations in CPT1A deficiency detected by newborn screening in Pacific populations.

Carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A) deficiency is a long chain fatty acid oxidation disorder, typically presenting with hypoketotic hypoglycaemia and liver dysfunction during fasting and intercurrent illness. Classical CPT1A deficiency is a rare disease, although a milder 'Arctic variant' (p.P479L) is common in the Inuit population. Since the introduction of expanded metabolic screening (EMS), the newborn screening programmes of Hawai'i and New Zealand (NZ) have detected a significant increase in the incidence of CPT1A deficiency. We report 22 individuals of Micronesian descent (12 in NZ

Ozone Layer Depletion and Emerging Public Health Concerns - An Update on Epidemiological Perspective of the Ambivalent Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation Exposure.

Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure is the primary etiological agent responsible for developing cutaneous malignancies. Avoiding excessive radiation exposure, especially by high-risk groups, is recommended to prevent UV-induced photo-pathologies. However, optimal sun exposure is essential for the healthy synthesis of about 90% of vitamin D levels in the body. Insufficient exposure to UV-B is linked to vitamin D deficiency in humans. Therefore, optimal sun exposure is necessary for maintaining a normal state of homeostasis in the skin. Humans worldwide face a major existential threat beca

Spatio-temporal Influences on Cereal Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Population Dynamics and the Incidence of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus.

Problems with aphids in small grain cereals, either direct by feeding, or indirect by transmission of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus, are expected to increase due to climate change and a recent ban on neonicotinoid seed treatments by the European Union. Moreover, insecticide resistance against pyrethroid insecticides is reported at multiple locations throughout the world. Therefore, a better understanding of cereal aphid population dynamics and increased attention towards an integrated pest management is needed. In this study, cereal aphids were monitored on 193 maize and small grain cereal fields

Advances in Biologically Applicable Graphene-Based 2D Nanomaterials.

Climate change and increasing contamination of the environment, due to anthropogenic activities, are accompanied with a growing negative impact on human life. Nowadays, humanity is threatened by the increasing incidence of difficult-to-treat cancer and various infectious diseases caused by resistant pathogens, but, on the other hand, ensuring sufficient safe food for balanced human nutrition is threatened by a growing infestation of agriculturally important plants, by various pathogens or by the deteriorating condition of agricultural land. One way to deal with all these undesirable facts is t

DETECTION OF SPLENDIDOFILARIA SP. (ONCHOCERCIDAE:SPLENDIDOFILARIINAE) MICROFILARIA WITHIN ALASKAN GROUND-DWELLING BIRDS IN THE GROUSE SUBFAMILY TETRAONINAE USING TAQMAN PROBE-BASED REAL-TIME PCR.

Grouse and ptarmigan (Galliformes) harbor fairly diverse helminth faunas that can impact the host's health, including filarial nematodes in the genus Splendidofilaria. As host and parasite distributions are predicted to shift in response to recent climate change, novel parasites may be introduced into a region and impose additional stressors on bird populations. Limited information is available on the prevalence of filariasis in Alaska galliforms. To date, no molecular surveys have been completed. Past studies relied on examining blood smears or total body necropsies, which are time-consuming

Potential of mathematical model-based decision making to promote sustainable performance of agriculture in developing countries: A review article.

In developing countries like Ethiopia, agriculture takes the leading role in the economy and enhancing the efficiency of agriculture resource decision making remains essential to eradicate extreme poverty through promoting sustainable agricultural production. Recent economic growth efforts in agriculture dependent economies are aggravating to further natural resource degradation, environmental pollution, and climate change. One of the main challenges is the use of inefficient conventional land use decision-making. Conventional land use decision making refers to the practice of traditional land

Sustainable Development Approaches through Wooden Adhesive Joints Design.

Over recent decades, the need to comply with environmental standards has become a concern in many industrial sectors. As a result, manufacturers have increased their use of eco-friendly, recycled, recyclable, and, overall, more sustainable materials and industrial techniques. One technique highly dependent on petroleum-based products, and at the edge of a paradigm change, is adhesive bonding. Adhesive bonding is often used to join composite materials and depends upon an adhesive to achieve the connection. However, the matrices of the composite materials and the adhesives used, as well as, in s

A barcoding pipeline for mosquito surveillance in Nepal, a biodiverse dengue-endemic country.

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases are on the rise on a global scale, which is anticipated to further accelerate because of anthropogenic climate change. Resource-limited regions are especially hard hit by this increment with the currently implemented surveillance programs being inadequate for the observed expansion of potential vector species. Cost-effective methods that can be easily implemented in resource-limited settings, e.g. under field conditions, are thus urgently needed to function as an early warning system for vector-borne disease epidemics. Our aim was to enhance entomological capa

Community trust of government and non-governmental organizations during the 2014-16 Ebola epidemic in Liberia.

The West African Ebola Virus Disease epidemic of 2014-16 cost more than 11,000 lives. Interventions targeting key behaviors to curb transmission, such as safe funeral practices and reporting and isolating the ill, were initially unsuccessful in a climate of fear, mistrust, and denial. Building trust was eventually recognized as essential to epidemic response and prioritized, and trust was seen to improve toward the end of the epidemic as incidence fell. However, little is understood about how and why trust changed during Ebola, what factors were most influential to community trust, and how dif
