The Digital Health Scorecard: A New Health Literacy Metric for NCD Prevention and Care.

According to the World Health Organization, 3 out of 5 deaths worldwide are due to common, chronic conditions, such as heart and respiratory diseases, cancer, and diabetes. These noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are linked to multiple lifestyle risk factors, including smoking, the harmful use of alcohol, and physical inactivity. They are associated with other "intermediate" risk factors, such as elevated body mass index (BMI), hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperglycemia. Taking action to reduce these 7 risk factors can help people protect themselves against leading causes of death. All of t

Breaking the mold: expanding options for reproductive health awareness: the CARE experience.

The early years of the CARE family planning and reproductive health program were geared primarily toward modern methods of contraception and providing services. However, new and fresh opportunities to address reproductive health awareness and natural family planning are now emerging as important options. In these programs, coordination and collaboration with other sectors such as food and nutrition, children's health and natural resource management, combined with more sophisticated approaches for assessing need and reaching communities with information, has resulted in more people being reache

Mental capacity legislation and communication disability: A cross-sectional survey exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the provision of specialist decision-making support by UK SLTs.

BACKGROUND: Mental capacity legislation in the UK is designed to safeguard the rights of people who may need support, or may be unable, to make autonomous decisions. Very limited evidence has been published about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the application of mental capacity legislation and, to our knowledge, none on the ability of speech and language therapists (SLTs) to support people with communication disabilities to engage in decision-making. AIMS: To describe how UK SLTs supported people with communication disabilities to make decisions and participate in mental capacity asse

Roles of Hospital Type and Community Setting in Rate of Screening for Metabolic Disorders Among Psychiatric Patients.

OBJECTIVE: Globally, rates of metabolic disorders continue to climb, leading to significant disease morbidity and mortality. Individuals with mental illness are particularly prone to obesity, and some medications, such as antipsychotics, may increase the risk for metabolic disorders. The American Psychiatric Association and the American Diabetes Association recommend that patients taking antipsychotic medications receive regular screening for metabolic disorders. This study examined hospital and community factors associated with screening these patients for such disorders. METHODS: The author

Designing clinically useful systems: examples from medicine and dentistry.

Despite promising results in medical informatics research and the development of a large number of different systems, few systems get beyond a prototype state and are really used in practice. Among other factors, the lack of explicit user focus is one main reason. The research projects presented in this paper follow a user-centered system development approach based on extensive work analyses in interdisciplinary working groups, taking into account human cognitive performance. Different medical and health-care specialists, together with researchers in human-computer interaction and medical info

Inflammation and Cardiometabolic Risk in African American Women Is Reduced by a Pilot Community-Based Educational Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death for women, and African Americans have higher rates of CVD mortality than do other racio/ethnic groups. Women in community settings can benefit from preventive interventions, yet few investigations of successful programs have been conducted and evaluated in high-risk women, especially for metabolic syndrome. The purpose of our study was to pilot and assess the effectiveness of a 4-month pre-/post-CVD preventive educational intervention in improving knowledge, clinical risk profiles, adoption of heart-healthy lifestyles, infl

Health Behavior Survey Among People Who Use Opioids: Protocol for Implementing Technology-Based Rapid Response Surveillance in Community Settings.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, 2 million Americans met the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition diagnostic criteria for an opioid use disorder, and 9.9 million Americans had misused prescription pain relievers the previous year. Despite a rapid increase in opioid misuse, opioid use disorders, and overdoses, data are limited on the behavioral and contextual risks as well as the protective factors fueling the opioid epidemic in some hard hit US cities-Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Opioid use also contributes to the risk of other health problems such as HIV and hepatiti

Development of a community research link worker role to enable culturally tailored research and empower marginalised communities to participate: the IBISES model.

BACKGROUND: People from ethnic minority and socioeconomically deprived backgrounds remain underrepresented in primary healthcare research despite experiencing worse health outcomes and healthcare experiences. Traditional engagement approaches often maintain power imbalances by keeping control within academic institutions, failing to achieve meaningful representation or change. AIM: This paper describes the iterative development of a model of community engagement across four research projects, aimed at increasing research participation from underserved communities through culturally appropriat

User Journey Mapping in Community Health Work: A Case Study From Philly CEAL.

Community health workers (CHWs) serve as bridges between clinical care and community-based social support, yet they are often excluded from the design of the health interventions they implement. User Journey Mapping (UJM) is a tool that can enhance health behavior interventions and their implementation. As part of formative planning for the Philadelphia Community Engagement Alliance (Philly CEAL), we employed UJM methods to engage CHWs as co-designers in the implementation of an adapted chronic disease self-management intervention to promote heart health while addressing social needs. We condu
