[Increased nervous excitability, anxiety, and sleep disorders in childhood - the role of multicomponent low-dose medications].

Anxiety, emotional excitability, and sleep disturbances are common in pediatric populations, often emerging during stressful periods such as chronic family conflict, parental divorce, initial socialization in kindergarten, and the beginning of formal schooling. These conditions are frequently linked to autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction. During such periods, nervous system instability impairs stress adaptation and may lead to neurotic reactions. Chronic stress and anxiety can trigger neuroinflammatory processes, which further intensify anxiety and ANS dysfunction. Clinically, these mec

Psychological Interventions Targeting Depressive Symptoms in Children and Adolescents Living in War or Conflict Affected Zones: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review maps psychological and psychosocial interventions aimed at reducing depressive symptoms in children and adolescents who continue to live within war- or armed conflict–affected zones. We sought to identify which approaches are specifically designed for depressive symptoms, how they are delivered in humanitarian contexts, and where robust evidence is still lacking. RECENT FINDINGS: Twenty-one studies published between 2005 and 2025 were identified across diverse settings including Palestine, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Nepal, and Northern Uganda. Most interven

The disputed role of knowledge in truth illusions: A critical test based on comparative judgments.

It has been argued that the illusory truth effect - the tendency to judge repeated statements as more likely true - persists even when a statement is known to be false, whereas a competing view maintains that knowledge shields against such truth illusions. In this study, we reexamine two models of truth judgment that formalize these opposing perspectives: the fluency-conditional model (FCM), which assumes that repetition-induced fluency can override knowledge, and the knowledge-conditional model (KCM), which assumes that knowledge always takes precedence over fluency, such that fluency only be

Commercial content moderation: Trauma exposure on the digital frontline.

Commercial content moderators (CCMs) serve as the hidden first responders of the internet, sifting through flagged user-generated content to keep online platforms safe. In their work, they have repetitive, frequent exposure to traumatic content, including child sexual abuse material, graphic violence, death, hate rhetoric, and more. Yet, relative to other occupations in which trauma exposure is common, the mental health effects of content moderation have received little study. This is in large part because it is a newer profession that arose with the widespread adoption of social media. In thi

[Research progress on early life protective factors for the developmental trajectories of children's internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems].

The long-term upward trend in children's internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems has become increasingly prominent, exerting profound impacts on their physical growth and mental health, and has emerged as a major public health concern of global significance. Multiple factors, including genetics, psychosocial conditions, family environments, and early life conditions, influence these behavioral problems. Notably, the early life stage is a critical period for an individual's physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development. The multiple protective factors inherent in this stage p

Treating CRPS and FNSD in an Adolescent: A Case Study.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a significantly impairing pain condition that can co-occur with other disorders, including Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder (FNSD). Interdisciplinary interventions augmented with peripheral nerve catheters (PNCs) are gaining attention as effective treatments for CRPS, but their utility in treating comorbid conditions like FNSD remains unclear. This case study presents a 15-year-old female who completed a PNC-augmented interdisciplinary pain program followed by outpatient psychotherapy, providing the first description of this approach for a patie

The lived experience of mask wearing among patients with chronic illnesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated widespread mask-wearing as a key preventive measure. While masks played a crucial role in limiting virus transmission, their implications for individuals living with chronic illnesses remain underexplored. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of patients with chronic conditions regarding mask-wearing during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on physical, psychological, and social aspects. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to explore the lived experiences of individuals with chronic illnesses regarding mask-wearing du

Erectile Dysfunction and Oxidative Stress: A Narrative Review.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a prevalent condition affecting male sexual health, characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain satisfactory erections. ED has a multifactorial pathogenesis in which psychological, hormonal, neurologic, cardiovascular, and lifestyle factors all contribute to a progressive decline of erectile function. A critical underlying mechanism involves oxidative stress (OS), an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and antioxidant defenses, which disrupts endothelial function, reduces nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, and contributes to vascula

An Insight on Ellagic Acid Formulations for the Management of Skin Diseases.

The skin is exposed to many environmental stressors, such as UV rays, pollution, and smoke, and psychological stress, which can compromise its structure and function. These factors can cause premature aging, weaken the skin barrier, worsen or induce pathological conditions such as acne and eczema, hyperpigmentation, and melanoma, and slow healing. Ellagic acid (EA) is a polyphenol with various pharmacological effects important for the treatment of skin conditions. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and depigmenting properties, and it inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase, involved in melanin prod

Essentials of hidradenitis suppurativa: a comprehensive review of diagnostic and treatment perspectives.

Hidradenitis suppurativa, or acne inversa, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition with recurrent inflammatory nodules, abscesses, subcutaneous tracts, and scars. This condition may cause severe psychological distress and reduce the quality of life for affected individuals. It is considered to have one of the most damaging effects on quality of life of any skin disorder as a result of the discomfort and foul-smelling discharge from these lesions. Although the pathophysiology of HS is still unclear, multiple factors, including lifestyle, genetic, and hormonal factors, have been associated with

Unveiling Coronasomnia: Pandemic Stress and Sleep Problems During the COVID-19 Outbreak.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed an unprecedented challenge to public well-being, necessitating an examination of its health impact. This review discusses the relationship between pandemic-induced stressors and individual sleep patterns and quality. The pandemic stressors include lockdown or physical distancing measures, direct virus exposure, and the dissemination of misinformation and disinformation. The pandemic led to delayed sleep-wake cycles, except for healthcare professionals, and worsened sleep quality. The prevalence of insomnia was higher for women due to pre-existing conditions and susc

Masked distress: The mediated effects of face masks on physical and emotional suffocation.

This study explores the effects of bodily states on emotions based on embodied cognition theories of conceptual metaphor and feelings-as-information theory. Specifically, it investigates how physical suffocation induced by mask-wearing affects perceptions of emotional suffocation related to one's romantic relationship and financial situation. In this quantitative online experiment, we employed a convenience sampling method through a crowdsourcing platform. Adult participants (N = 180, 25 years or older and involved in a romantic relationship) were randomly assigned to three conditions: wearing

Association of Deja vu With Cardiovascular Diseases.

Recent studies have suggested a link between déjà vu and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). While the mechanism for this association is not fully understood, 1 theory suggests that déjà vu may be a result of a disruption in the temporal lobe, which is also responsible for regulating blood pressure and heart rate. Another theory suggests that there may be a shared genetic factor between the 2 conditions, with certain individuals being predisposed to experiencing both. The Apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene, in particular, has been associated with memory processing, Alzheimer's disease, and an increased

Imagine All the People: A Guided Internet-Based Imagery Training to Increase Assertiveness among University Students-Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

The importance of communication skills for well-being and self-realization is widely accepted. Despite that, research on assertiveness and assertiveness training has declined significantly in recent decades. Consequently, traditional training does not consider the most recent novel technologies used to spread psychological interventions. This study proposes the development of ComunicaBene: a guided Internet-based imagery intervention to promote assertiveness. Moreover, it describes the study protocol for a randomized control trial to investigate the intervention's efficacy and acceptability. P

Neurotechnological solutions for post-traumatic stress disorder: A perspective review and concept proposal.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety condition caused by exposure to severe trauma. It is characterised by nightmares, flashbacks, hyper-vigilance and avoidance behaviour. These all lead to impaired functioning reducing quality of life. PTSD affects 2-5% of the population globally. Most sufferers cannot access effective treatment, leading to impaired psychological functioning reducing quality of life. Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) is a non-invasive brain stimulation treatment that has shown significant clinical effectiveness in PTSD. Another treatment moda

[First Central American and Caribbean Consensus on Irritable Bowel Syndrome].

Irritable bowel syndrome is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders seen by physicians, both in primary and secondary care. Significant advances have been made in understanding its complex pathophysiology, resulting in its reclassification as a gut-brain interaction disorder, rather than a functional gastrointestinal disorder. The condition affects between 5% and 10% of the population and, in most cases, it is characterized by having a relapsing-remitting course. This diagnosis can be made based on the clinical history with limited and judicious use of investigations, unless symptoms
