Inhibitory effect of the water-soluble retinoid X receptor partial agonist CAt-PMN on allergic conjunctivitis-like responses in mice.

Allergic conjunctivitis (AC) is an immune-mediated inflammatory disease of the conjunctiva characterized by ocular itching, hyperaemia, and edema, and inflammatory cell infiltration. Though topical glucocorticoids (steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are effective for a broad range of signs and symptoms of ocular inflammation, their use is limited by potential adverse effects, including elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). Therefore, steroidal sparing-therapeutic approachs for AC are needed. Here we report a therapeutic effect of CAt-PMN, the highly water-soluble retinoid X receptor (RXR) parti

Successful Repair of Glaucoma Drainage Device Tube Exposure With a Corneal Patch Graft and Double-Layer Amniotic Membrane: A Case Report.

Tube exposure is a recognised complication of glaucoma drainage devices (GDD). We report a case of successful repair of GDD tube exposure using a corneal patch graft and double-layer amniotic membrane in a visually precious eye with previous multiple surgeries. A 47-year-old man with juvenile open-angle glaucoma (JOAG) underwent trabeculectomy in both eyes (OU) and two GDD implantations in the right eye (OD). The left eye (OS) trabeculectomy failed, leading to panophthalmitis and evisceration. Six years after the second GDD in the OD, the superonasal tube became exposed (3.8 mm). Initial repai

Biochemical parameters of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) treated with citronella oil (Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt ex Bor) and its influence on reproduction.

Spodoptera frugiperda is the principal corn pest in Brazil. Searches for new control methods that minimize the adverse effects of synthetic insecticides have initiated a resurgence of the use of botanical insecticides. Citronella oil (a product of Cymbopogon winterianus) is an effective repellent and insecticide. Thus, biochemical profile changes in oil-treated larvae and its influence on reproduction were assessed. Corn leaves dipped in a 50mg/mL concentration were offered to third instar larvae for 24h and assessed in sixth instar to estimate protein, lipid, sugar, and glycogen levels. Adult

Correlation of axial blood velocity to venular and arteriolar diameter in the human eye in vivo.

The axial blood velocity (Vax) association with microvessel diameter (D) was studied at 104 different postcapillary venules (4 μm <  D <  24 μm) and 30 different precapillary arterioles (6 μm≤D≤12 μm) in the human conjunctiva of normal healthy humans. Venular diameter sizes were classified as "very small" (Group 1, 4.4 μm≤D <  8.9 μm), "small" (Group 2, 8.9 μm≤D <  13.8 μm), "medium" (Group 3, 13.8 μm≤D <  19.1 μm) and "large" (Group 4, 19.1 μm≤D≤23.5). The Spearman's correlation coefficient (rs) in all 4 venular groups was less than 0.36 and not statistically significant (n = 26, p≥0.08). Sim
