Urinary DNA Extraction in Uro-Oncology and Selected Non-Urological Malignancies: A Narrative Review.

Urine is an attractive source of tumor-derived DNA because collection is non-invasive, repeatable, and compatible with large-volume or home-based sampling. Urinary DNA comprises biologically distinct fractions, principally cellular DNA from exfoliated cells and urinary cell-free DNA (cfDNA), which may originate from local release within the urinary tract or from transrenal passage of circulating DNA. Consequently, analytical performance is strongly influenced by urine collection, fractionation, stabilization, extraction, and downstream molecular analysis. This narrative review summarizes evide

Prognostic value of the HALP (hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet) score in emergency versus elective inguinal hernia repair: A retrospective study.

The hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet (HALP) score is a novel prognostic biomarker that reflects a patient's immune-nutritional status. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of the HALP score in patients undergoing emergency versus elective inguinal hernia repair. This retrospective study analyzed data from 235 patients who underwent inguinal hernia surgery at a single center. The patients were categorized into emergency (n = 97) and elective (n = 138) groups, with the emergency group further divided into intestinal resection (n = 12) and non-resection (n

Understanding HIV/AIDS dynamics: insights from CD4+T cells, antiretroviral treatment, and country-specific analysis.

In this article, we present a mathematical model for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), taking into account the number of CD4+T cells and antiretroviral treatment. This model is developed based on the susceptible, infected, treated, AIDS (SITA) framework, wherein the infected and treated compartments are divided based on the number of CD4+T cells. Additionally, we consider the possibility of treatment failure, which can exacerbate the condition of the treated individual. Initially, we analyze a simplified HIV/AIDS model without differentiation betwee

Magnetic smartphone microflow cytometry enables rapid CD4/CD8 T cell quantification.

Accurate enumeration of CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes is essential for HIV management, yet conventional flow cytometry remains largely inaccessible in resource-limited settings. Current point-of-care testing (POCT) approaches, including lateral flow assays and fluorescence-based imaging methods, offer improved accessibility but typically compromise accuracy and yield semi-quantitative results. Here, we present a magnetic-activated smartphone microflow cytometry (MACC) platform that enables rapid, highly accessible, and fully quantitative T lymphocyte counting at the POCT. MACC integrates microfl

Naples Score: A Novel Predictor of Infrapopliteal Artery Disease Severity and Complexity.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral artery disease (PAD), particularly infrapopliteal lesions, represents a severe form of atherosclerotic vascular disease. The Naples prognostic score (NPS), which reflects systemic inflammation and nutritional status, has emerged as a potential predictor of cardiovascular outcomes. This study investigates the association between the NPS and the severity of infrapopliteal artery disease, as classified by the Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus II (TASC II) system. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed data from 282 patients with infrapopliteal lesions who underwent peri

The Spectrum of Ambulatory Electrocardiographic Monitoring.

Since its introduction as a clinical investigative tool, the 12-lead electrocardiograph (ECG) has been the gold standard for recognition of cardiac arrhythmias. The resting 12-lead ECG, however, gives only a rhythm snapshot in time, whereas arrhythmias maybe short-lived, paroxysmal and even asymptomatic making documentation in many patients very difficult. To overcome this, ambulatory ECG monitoring has been developed as a means of recording the ECG in patients over a set period of time, whether it be short-, medium- or long-term. With the miniaturisation of recording devices and advances in s

A multiple-task gait analysis approach: kinematic, kinetic and EMG reference data for healthy young and adult subjects.

Standard clinical gait analysis protocols usually limit to test self-selected speed gait: this approach is generally valid and permits time and cost saving. Yet, the literature evidences suggest that some pathologies (especially at onset or subclinical level) may not primarily affect plain gait, but more demanding locomotor tasks. In the present study we therefore propose a multiple-task gait analysis protocol including: self-selected, increased and decreased speed gait; walking on toes; walking on heels; step ascending and step descending, and apply it to 40 healthy subjects (20 aged 6-17, 20

The Role of Green Infrastructure in Enhancing Flood Resilience: A Spatial Perspective.

The aim of this study is to empirically assess the effectiveness of green infrastructure (GI) in South Korea as a way to enhance flood resilience. We applied a spatial analytical approach to examine the impact of GI on flood resilience. Specifically, we tested spatial dependence with Moran's I and local indicators of spatial association, addressing it with spatial lag and spatial error models. We compiled government data on GI and other regional attributes for 226 administrative districts in South Korea. Unlike previous studies that focused only on damage costs, this study incorporated both da

Cost implications of alternative treatments for AIDS patients with cryptococcal meningitis. Comparison of fluconazole and amphotericin B-based therapies.

The extra demands placed upon health care resources by management of AIDS patients have increased the focus on cost implications of therapeutic alternatives. Cryptococcal meningitis is a common life-threatening infection in AIDS patients, usually treated with amphotericin B, often in combination with flucytosine. Administered intravenously, this therapy is associated with frequent and often severe side effects. Fluconazole is a new alternative which can be given orally once daily and has fewer such side effects. The purpose of this study was to examine the cost implications of these different
