Chromosomal abnormalities may be of help in identifying disease genes. To search for susceptibility loci for schizophrenia, we have performed chromosomal examinations by using the GTG banding technique for 250 schizophrenics. We found five cases with an aneuploidy of the X chromosome and ten cases with pericentric inversion of chromosome 9 [inv (9)]. From 1968-1983 302,643 boys were born, 68 of whom were subsequently identified as having Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The overall incidence with respect to live male births is 1:4451 (22.5 x 10(-5)). Cultured lymphocytes from children with kwashiorkor and from normal children were examined for their susceptibility to ultraviolet (UV)-induced chromosome aberrations, sister-chromatid exchanges and cell survival.
