Characterizing cerebrospinal fluid mobility using heavily T2-weighted 3D fast spin echo (FSE) imaging with improved multi-directional diffusion-sensitized driven-equilibrium (iMDDSDE) preparation.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow patterns and their relationship with arterial pulsation can depict the function of glymphatic system (GS). We propose an improved multi-directional diffusion-sensitized driven-equilibrium (iMDDSDE) prepared heavily T2-weighted 3D FSE (iMDDSDE-HT2) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method to noninvasively assess the mobility (MO) of CSF distributed in the ventricles and perivascular spaces (PVS). This method could obtain 3D high resolution (1 mm isotropic) imaging of CSF MO with full brain coverage within five min and distinguish the CSF MO across different pulse p

Puberty differentially predicts brain maturation in male and female youth: A longitudinal ABCD Study.

Research has demonstrated associations between pubertal development and brain maturation. However, existing studies have been limited by small samples, cross-sectional designs, and inconclusive findings regarding directionality of effects and sex differences. We examined the longitudinal temporal coupling of puberty status assessed using the Pubertal Development Scale (PDS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based grey and white matter brain structure. Our sample consisted of 8896 children and adolescents at baseline (mean age = 9.9) and 6099 at follow-up (mean age = 11.9) from the Adolescen

Textural Analysis of Magnetic Resonance Images as an Additional Evaluation Tool of Parotid Glands in Sjögren-Primarily Findings.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a leading role in diagnosing soft tissue pathologies, especially in the head and neck. It is increasingly popular for evaluating salivary gland issues like neoplasms and Sjogren's Syndrome. Advanced MRI methods, including MRI sialography and texture analysis, offer non-invasive alternatives, enhancing MRI's role. This study focused on the relationship between the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and T2-weighted MRI sialography and texture analysis (TA) of parotid glands in children with and without Sjogren's Syndrome (SS). Using 3.0 Tesla MRI with DWI

Brain Network Connectivity and Executive Function in Children with Infantile Hydrocephalus.

Introduction: Infantile hydrocephalus (HCP) is a condition in which there is an abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles within the first few months of life, which puts pressure on surrounding brain tissues. Compression of the developing brain increases the risk of secondary brain injury and cognitive disabilities. Methods: In this study, we used diffusion-weighted imaging and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the effects of ventricle dilatation on structural and functional brain networks in children with shunted infantile HCP and examined how

Acute middle cerebral artery occlusion caused by spontaneous thrombosis of a small internal carotid artery aneurysm: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous thrombosis of a saccular, unruptured, intracranial aneurysm is rare in nongiant aneurysms. Herein, the authors present a case of acute middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCO) caused by spontaneous thrombus of a small internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm. OBSERVATIONS: A 68-year-old woman presented with increased somnolence, right-sided hemiplegia, hemispatial neglect, and total aphagia. Left MCO and a small left ICA aneurysm were suspected based on magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). The authors detected early ischemic lesions from diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI).

Sex Differences in Anatomical Rich-Club and Structural-Functional Coupling in the Human Brain Network.

Structural and functional differences between the brains of female and male adults have been well documented. However, potential sex differences in the patterns of rich-club organization and the coupling between their structural connectivity (SC) and functional connectivity (FC) remain to be determined. In this study, functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging techniques were combined to examine sex differences in rich-club organization. Females had a stronger SC-FC coupling than males. Moreover, stronger SC-FC coupling in the females was primarily located in feeder con

Diffusion property and functional connectivity of superior longitudinal fasciculus underpin human metacognition.

Metacognition as the capacity of monitoring one's own cognition operates across domains. Here, we addressed whether metacognition in different cognitive domains rely on common or distinct neural substrates with combined diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) techniques. After acquiring DTI and resting-state fMRI data, we asked participants to perform a temporal-order memory task and a perceptual discrimination task, followed by trial-specific confidence judgments. DTI analysis revealed that the structural integrity (indexed by fractional anisotropy) in

Homonymous Hemianopsia Due to the Infarction in the Splenium of the Corpus Callosum.

The precise functions of the splenium of the corpus callosum (CC) remain unclear, and infarction of this location manifests varied clinical symptoms. We describe a rare case of right homonymous hemianopsia resulting from pure infarction in the right-side splenium of the CC. An 85-year-old man presented with right homonymous hemianopsia lasting for a week. Diffusion-weighted imaging showed a high-intensity area in the right-side splenium of the CC and did not show any other lesions in other portions of the visual pathways. Magnetic resonance angiography demonstrated anterior and posterior cereb

Local Anesthetic-Induced Central Nervous System Toxicity during Interscalene Brachial Plexus Block: A Case Series Study of Three Patients.

Local anesthetics are commonly administered by nuchal infiltration to provide a temporary interscalene brachial plexus block (ISB) in a surgical setting. Although less commonly reported, local anesthetics can induce central nervous system toxicity. In this case study, we present three patients with acute central nervous system toxicity induced by local anesthetics applied during ISB with emphasis on neurological symptoms, key neuroradiological findings and functional outcome. Medical history, clinical and imaging findings, and outcome of three patients with local anesthetic-induced toxic left

Improved brain growth and microstructural development in breast milk-fed very low birth weight premature infants.

AIM: Breast milk feeding is linked to improved neurodevelopmental outcomes in very low birth weight (VLBW) infants, though the mechanisms are not well understood. This study utilised quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) techniques to compare brain growth and white matter development in preterm infants receiving primarily breast milk versus formula feeds. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled infants born at very low birth weight (<1500 g) and <32 weeks gestational age and performed MRI at term-equivalent age. We utilised volumetric segmentation to calculate regional and total brain vol

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES): presentation, diagnosis and treatment.

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is a neurological disorder which is characterised by variable symptoms, which include visual disturbances, headache, vomiting, seizures and altered consciousness. The exact pathophysiology of PRES has not been completely explained, but hypertension and endothelial injury seem to be almost always present. Vasoconstriction resulting in vasogenic and cytotoxic edema is suspected to be responsible for the clinical symptoms as well as the neuro-radiological presentation. On imaging studies, Symmetrical white matter abnormalities suggestive of edem

Comparison of MRI-based automated segmentation methods and functional neurosurgery targeting with direct visualization of the Ventro-intermediate thalamic nucleus at 7T.

The ventro-intermediate nucleus (Vim), as part of the motor thalamic nuclei, is a commonly used target in functional stereotactic neurosurgery for treatment of drug-resistant tremor. As it cannot be directly visualized on routinely used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), its clinical targeting is performed using indirect methods. Recent literature suggests that the Vim can be directly visualized on susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) acquired at 7 T. Our work aims to assess the distinguishable Vim on 7 T SWI in both healthy-population and patients and, using it as a reference, to compare it w
