JUVENILE POLYP IN ADULTS.

Colorectal juvenile polyp as a pathologic entity was first described by Verse. These non-neoplastic lesions are most commonly found in children and infants, while in older children after the age of 14 and adults are a rare phenomenon. A 75-year-old female underwent colonoscopy. There was a pedunculated polyp in the transverse colon. Complete endoscopic electroresection of this polyp was performed and the polyp was sent for histopathologic analysis. Macroscopically, the polyp was described as a fragment of irregular round shape, size of about 2.5x2x1 cm, with fine-grained, reddish surface, show

The role of non-coding RNAs in myocarditis: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Myocarditis is a heterogeneous disease that can lead to acute heart failure, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), and sudden death. However, the knowledge of the precise molecular mechanisms of myocarditis is fairly limited. In recent years, non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been demonstrated to be involved in many physiological and pathological processes in myocarditis and to have the potential to be used as novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for myocarditis. This review summarizes the role of ncRNAs in myocarditis and discusses their potential as noninvasive biomarker

Cardiac CIP protein regulates dystrophic cardiomyopathy.

Heart failure is a leading cause of fatality in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) patients. Previously, we discovered that cardiac and skeletal-muscle-enriched CIP proteins play important roles in cardiac function. Here, we report that CIP, a striated muscle-specific protein, participates in the regulation of dystrophic cardiomyopathy. Using a mouse model of human DMD, we found that deletion of CIP leads to dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure in young, non-syndromic mdx mice. Conversely, transgenic overexpression of CIP reduces pathological dystrophic cardiomyopathy in old, syndromic mdx

The DMD gene and therapeutic approaches to restore dystrophin.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe X-linked disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness. It is caused by a variety of DMD gene pathogenic variations (large deletions or duplications, and small mutations) which leads to the absence or to a decreased amount of dystrophin protein. The allelic Becker muscular dystrophy is characterized by later onset and milder muscle involvement, and other rarer phenotypes might also be associated, such as dilated cardiomyopathy, cognitive impairment, and other neurological signs. Following the identification of the genetic cause and the disea

Cellular senescence in vascular wall mesenchymal stromal cells, a possible contribution to the development of aortic aneurysm.

Cellular senescence is a hallmark of ageing and it plays a key role in the development of age-related diseases. Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is an age related degenerative vascular disorder, characterized by a progressive dilatation of the vascular wall and high risk of rupture over time. Nowadays, no pharmacological therapies are available and the understanding of the molecular mechanisms that lead to AAA onset and development are poorly defined. In this study we investigated the cellular features of senescence in vascular mesenchymal stromal cells, isolated from pathological (AAA - MSCs)

Giant Coronary Artery Aneurysm: A Successful Diagnosis.

Coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) are rare, with giant CAAs being even rarer. The precise pathophysiology of this phenomenon is still unknown. CAAs are seldom reported life-threatening abnormalities of the cardiovascular system. We herein present a case of a 74-year-old man who presented at the hospital complaining of chest pain. An adenosine thallium scan revealed a small, reversible defect in the inferior wall of the left ventricle extending into the apex, consistent with ischemia. Echocardiography uncovered a large right coronary artery (RCA) aneurysm, measuring 5.6 × 7.5 cm. Diagnostic coro

Vulvar Varicosities in an Adolescent Girl with Morbid Obesity: A Case Report.

Vulvar varicosities in nonpregnant females, either isolated or as a part of the pelvic congestion syndrome, are rare. We present a case of an adolescent girl with morbid obesity with bilateral bluish protrusions on the labia minora, as an incidental finding, that coincided with her excessive weight gain. The adolescent underwent thorough clinical examination, doppler ultrasound, contrast venography and varicography, and magnetic resonance angiography to rule out alternative diagnoses. Imaging results confirmed the presence of large venous lakes. Venous drainage to the internal iliac vein and c

Endoscopic Laser Fenestration to Treat a Bobble-Head Doll Syndrome Caused by Suprasellar Cyst.

The bobble-head doll syndrome (BHDS) is a rare acquired head movement disorder characterized by up and down or side-to-side movement, most commonly seen in the first decade of life. The syndrome occurs more often in lesions causing third ventricle dilatation such as suprasellar or third ventricle cyst, but it is also found in other pathologies associated with hydrocephalus like shunt dysfunctions, trapped fourth ventricle, congenital aqueductal stenosis, Dandy-Walker syndrome, and cerebellar malformations. The pathophysiology of this head movement has different origins theories; one states tha

Stereotactic surgery for neurocysticercosis of the 4th ventricle: illustrative cases.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis, caused by the larval stage of Taenia solium, affects the cerebral ventricles in 20-30% of cases and may lead to hydrocephalus and other neurological morbidity. Conventional treatment for cysts in the 4th ventricle includes open surgery (suboccipital approach) and neuroendoscopy, with the latter being the option of choice. Stereotactic surgery, minimally invasive, offers a good alternative for this type of deep lesion. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the cases of two women, 30 and 45 years old, who presented with headache, dizziness, and ataxia and were diagnos

Eurytrema coelomaticum natural infection in small ruminants: a neglected condition.

Pancreatic eurytrematosis (PE) is an under diagnosed and neglected parasitosis in goats and sheep in the Americas. Clinical and pathological features of PE are not well defined in small ruminants worldwide. Natural cases of PE in small ruminants were detected in the Federal District, Brazil. A survey of necropsy records, including epidemiological and clinicopathological data, in goats and sheep was conducted. Most cases of PE occurred during the rainy season in adult females, with an incidence of 12.9% in goats and 0.8% in sheep. Clinical signs varied from asymptomatic infections to anorexia,

The clinical impact of growth differentiation factor-15 in heart disease: A 2019 update.

Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), also known as macrophage inhibitory cytokine-1 (MIC-1) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug-activated gene (NAG-1) has been identified as a biomarker of response to treatment and prognosis in cardiovascular diseases. GDF-15 is a member of the transforming growth factor-β superfamily and is involved in several pathological conditions such as inflammation, cancer, cardiovascular, pulmonary and renal diseases. Cardiac myocytes produce and secrete GDF-15 in response to oxidative stress, stimulation with angiotensin II or proinflammatory cytokines, isch

Extracellular matrix, regional heterogeneity of the aorta, and aortic aneurysm.

Aortic aneurysm is an asymptomatic disease with dire outcomes if undiagnosed. Aortic aneurysm rupture is a significant cause of death worldwide. To date, surgical repair or endovascular repair (EVAR) is the only effective treatment for aortic aneurysm, as no pharmacological treatment has been found effective. Aortic aneurysm, a focal dilation of the aorta, can be formed in the thoracic (TAA) or the abdominal (AAA) region; however, our understanding as to what determines the site of aneurysm formation remains quite limited. The extracellular matrix (ECM) is the noncellular component of the aort

Polyamines and microbiota in bicuspid and tricuspid aortic valve aortopathy.

Polyamines are small aliphatic cationic molecules synthesized via a highly regulated pathway and involved in general molecular and cellular phenomena. Both mammalian cells and microorganisms synthesize polyamines, and both sources may contribute to the presence of polyamines in the circulation. The dominant location for microorganisms within the body is the gut. Accordingly, the gut microbiota probably synthesizes most of the polyamines in the circulation in addition to those produced by the mammalian host cells. Polyamines are mandatory for cellular growth and proliferation. Established evide

Intracranial Aneurysms: Pathology, Genetics, and Molecular Mechanisms.

Intracranial aneurysms (IA) are local dilatations in cerebral arteries that predominantly affect the circle of Willis. Occurring in approximately 2-5% of adults, these weakened areas are susceptible to rupture, leading to subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of hemorrhagic stroke. Due to its early age of onset and poor prognosis, SAH accounts for > 25% of years lost for all stroke victims under the age of 65. In this review, we describe the cerebrovascular pathology associated with intracranial aneurysms. To understand IA genetics, we summarize syndromes with elevated incidence, genome-wide a

The effects of cardiomyopathy-associated mutations in the head-to-tail overlap junction of α-tropomyosin on its properties and interaction with actin.

Tropomyosin (Tpm) plays a crucial role in the regulation of muscle contraction by controlling actin-myosin interaction. Tpm coiled-coil molecules bind each other via overlap junctions of their N- and C-termini and form a semi-rigid strand that binds the helical surface of an actin filament. The high bending stiffness of the strand is essential for high cooperativity of muscle regulation. Point mutations M8R and K15N in the N-terminal part of the junction and the A277V one in the C-terminal part are associated with dilated cardiomyopathy, while the M281T and I284V mutations are related to hyper

Low Back Pain: A Pain That May Not Be Harmless.

UNLABELLED: Abdominal aortic aneurysms are defined as vascular dilatations greater than 50% of the normal proximal segment or those that have a maximum diameter above 3 cm. Risk factors include male gender, age over 75 years, history of vascular pathology, hypertension and arteriosclerosis. The Authors describe a case of a 74-year-old man, evaluated in an emergency setting for right lumbar pain lasting 4 days. The pain did not respond to analgesia and became progressively worse. Due to the severity of symptoms, CT angiography was performed, which showed an active rupture of a partially contain

Role of autophagy and regulatory mechanisms in alcoholic cardiomyopathy.

Alcoholism is accompanied with a high incidence of cardiac morbidity and mortality due to the development of alcoholic cardiomyopathy, manifested as dilation of one or both ventricles, reduced ventricular wall thickness, myofibrillary disarray, interstitial fibrosis, hypertrophy and contractile dysfunction. Several theories have been postulated for the etiology of alcoholic cardiomyopathy including ethanol/acetaldehyde toxicity, mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species, oxidative injury, apoptosis, impaired myofilament Ca2+ sensitivity and protein synthesis, altered fatty acid extra

APOE and MS4A6A interact with GnRH signaling in Alzheimer's disease: Enrichment of epistatic effects.

INTRODUCTION: It is unknown if risk loci, identified by genome-wide association studies of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD), are linked to common molecular mechanisms through epistatic effects. METHODS: We performed genome-wide interaction studies of five risk variants for LOAD followed by enrichment analyses to find if there are pathways that simultaneously interact with more than one variant. This novel approach was applied to four independent cohorts (5393 cases and 3746 controls). RESULTS: We found enrichment of epistasis in gonadotropin-releasing hormone signaling with risk single-
