Unveiling the Invisible: Challenges Faced by Arab Women International Medical Graduates in U.S. Academia.

PURPOSE: The Arab experience is understudied because until 2024 Arabs were categorized as White on the U.S. Census, leading to diminished documentation of their personal experiences. There is also little understanding of the Arab experience and its intersectionality with gender, being an international medical graduate (IMG), and working in academia. The authors studied the experience of Arab women IMGs working in the U.S. academic system. METHOD: This qualitative study used interpretative phenomenological analysis to analyze in-depth interview data from 20 first-generation U.S. immigrant Arab

Association between deep learning measured retinal vessel calibre and incident myocardial infarction in a retrospective cohort from the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of global death. Prospective population-based studies have found that changes in retinal microvasculature are associated with the development of coronary artery disease. Recently, artificial intelligence deep learning (DL) algorithms have been developed for the fully automated assessment of retinal vessel calibres. METHODS: In this study, we validate the association between retinal vessel calibres measured by a DL system (Singapore I Vessel Assessment) and incident myocardial infarction (MI) and assess its incremental performance in discri

Predicting drug adverse effects using a new Gastro-Intestinal Pacemaker Activity Drug Database (GIPADD).

Electrical data could be a new source of big-data for training artificial intelligence (AI) for drug discovery. A Gastro-Intestinal Pacemaker Activity Drug Database (GIPADD) was built using a standardized methodology to test drug effects on electrical gastrointestinal (GI) pacemaker activity. The current report used data obtained from 89 drugs with 4867 datasets to evaluate the potential use of the GIPADD for predicting drug adverse effects (AEs) using a machine-learning (ML) approach and to explore correlations between AEs and GI pacemaker activity. Twenty-four "electrical" features (EFs) wer

Respiratory distress syndrome prediction at birth by optical skin maturity assessment and machine learning models for limited-resource settings: a development and validation study.

BACKGROUND: A handheld optical device was developed to evaluate a newborn's skin maturity by assessing the photobiological properties of the tissue and processing it with other variables to predict early neonatal prognosis related to prematurity. This study assessed the device's ability to predict respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). METHODS: To assess the device's utility we enrolled newborns at childbirth in six urban perinatal centers from two multicenter single-blinded clinical trials. All newborns had inpatient follow-up until 72 h of life. We trained supervised machine learning models w

Classification of patients with embolic stroke of undetermined source into cardioembolic and non-cardioembolic profile subgroups.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: It is currently thought that embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) has diverse underlying hidden etiologies, of which cardioembolism is one of the most important. The subgroup of patients with this etiology could theoretically benefit from oral anticoagulation, but it remains unclear if these patients can be correctly identified from other ESUS subgroups and which markers should be used. We aimed to determine whether a machine-learning (ML) model could discriminate between ESUS patients with cardioembolic and those with non-cardioembolic profiles using baseline d

Automated analysis of fibrous cap in intravascular optical coherence tomography images of coronary arteries.

Thin-cap fibroatheroma (TCFA) and plaque rupture have been recognized as the most frequent risk factor for thrombosis and acute coronary syndrome. Intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT) can identify TCFA and assess cap thickness, which provides an opportunity to assess plaque vulnerability. We developed an automated method that can detect lipidous plaque and assess fibrous cap thickness in IVOCT images. This study analyzed a total of 4360 IVOCT image frames of 77 lesions among 41 patients. Expert cardiologists manually labeled lipidous plaque based on established criteria. To impro

How to pin a compulsive behavior down: A systematic review and conceptual synthesis of compulsivity-sensitive items in measures of behavioral addiction.

Experimental models identify the transition from choice to compulsivity as the main mechanism underlying addiction. In behavioral addictions research, however, the adjective compulsive is used to describe virtually any kind of excessive or dysregulated behavior, which hinders the connection between experimental and clinical models. In this systematic review, we adopted a preliminary definition of compulsive behavior based on previous theoretical work. Subsequently, a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted (a) to identify the validated instruments, currently used in behavio

Repurposing FDA approved drugs as possible anti-SARS-CoV-2 medications using ligand-based computational approaches: sum of ranking difference-based model selection.

The worldwide burden of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still unremittingly prevailing, with more than 440 million infections and over 5.9 million deaths documented so far since the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) pandemic. The non-availability of treatment further aggravates the scenario, thereby demanding the exploration of pre-existing FDA-approved drugs for their effectiveness against COVID-19. The current research aims to identify potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 drugs using a computational approach and repurpose them if possible. In the present study, we have

Cerebral blood flow alterations in migraine patients with and without aura: An arterial spin labeling study.

BACKGROUND: Migraine aura is a transient, fully reversible visual, sensory, or other central nervous system symptom that classically precedes migraine headache. This study aimed to investigate cerebral blood flow (CBF) alterations of migraine with aura patients (MwA) and without aura patients (MwoA) during inter-ictal periods, using arterial spin labeling (ASL). METHODS: We evaluated 88 migraine patients (32 MwA) and 44 healthy control subjects (HC) who underwent a three-dimensional pseudo-continuous ASL MRI scanning. Voxel-based comparison of normalized CBF was conducted between MwA and MwoA

Rapid quantification of COVID-19 pneumonia burden from computed tomography with convolutional long short-term memory networks.

Purpose: Quantitative lung measures derived from computed tomography (CT) have been demonstrated to improve prognostication in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients but are not part of clinical routine because the required manual segmentation of lung lesions is prohibitively time consuming. We aim to automatically segment ground-glass opacities and high opacities (comprising consolidation and pleural effusion). Approach: We propose a new fully automated deep-learning framework for fast multi-class segmentation of lung lesions in COVID-19 pneumonia from both contrast and non-contrast CT

Machine Learning Model to Identify Sepsis Patients in the Emergency Department: Algorithm Development and Validation.

Accurate stratification of sepsis can effectively guide the triage of patient care and shared decision making in the emergency department (ED). However, previous research on sepsis identification models focused mainly on ICU patients, and discrepancies in model performance between the development and external validation datasets are rarely evaluated. The aim of our study was to develop and externally validate a machine learning model to stratify sepsis patients in the ED. We retrospectively collected clinical data from two geographically separate institutes that provided a different level of c

Classification accuracy of the word memory test genuine memory impairment index.

OBJECTIVE: The Word Memory Test (WMT) assesses non-credible performance in neuropsychological assessment. To mitigate risk of false positives among patients with severe cognitive dysfunction, the Genuine Memory Impairment Profile was derived. Only a modest number of investigations has evaluated classification accuracy among clinical samples, leaving the GMIP's accuracy largely uncertain. Accordingly, a simulation experiment evaluated the classification accuracy of the GMIP in a group of healthy individuals coached to simulate mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) related memory impairment on the W

Decoding Activity in Broca's Area Predicts the Occurrence of Auditory Hallucinations Across Subjects.

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) capture aims at detecting auditory-verbal hallucinations (AVHs) from continuously recorded brain activity. Establishing efficient capture methods with low computational cost that easily generalize between patients remains a key objective in precision psychiatry. To address this issue, we developed a novel automatized fMRI-capture procedure for AVHs in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ). METHODS: We used a previously validated but labor-intensive personalized fMRI-capture method to train a linear classifier using machine learning techniqu

Network science inspires novel tree shape statistics.

The shape of phylogenetic trees can be used to gain evolutionary insights. A tree's shape specifies the connectivity of a tree, while its branch lengths reflect either the time or genetic distance between branching events; well-known measures of tree shape include the Colless and Sackin imbalance, which describe the asymmetry of a tree. In other contexts, network science has become an important paradigm for describing structural features of networks and using them to understand complex systems, ranging from protein interactions to social systems. Network science is thus a potential source of m

Democratizing EHR analyses with FIDDLE: a flexible data-driven preprocessing pipeline for structured clinical data.

OBJECTIVE: In applying machine learning (ML) to electronic health record (EHR) data, many decisions must be made before any ML is applied; such preprocessing requires substantial effort and can be labor-intensive. As the role of ML in health care grows, there is an increasing need for systematic and reproducible preprocessing techniques for EHR data. Thus, we developed FIDDLE (Flexible Data-Driven Pipeline), an open-source framework that streamlines the preprocessing of data extracted from the EHR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Largely data-driven, FIDDLE systematically transforms structured EHR dat

Radiomics Method for the Differential Diagnosis of Radionecrosis Versus Progression after Fractionated Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy for Brain Oligometastasis.

Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is recommended for treatment of brain oligometastasis (BoM) in patients with controlled primary disease. Where contrast enhancement enlargement occurs during follow-up, distinguishing between radionecrosis and progression presents a critical challenge. Without pathological confirmation, decision-making may be inappropriate and delayed. Quantitative imaging features extracted from routinely performed examinations are of interest in potentially addressing this problem. We explored the added value of the radiomics method for the differential diagnosis of these two
