Normative scores for the three factor eating questionnaire (TFEQ-R18) in a UK population-based cohort.

Eating behaviour traits (EBTs), individuals' reactions to food, food-related cues, and food intake, play an important role in the development and maintenance of overweight and obesity. We provide population-based norms for cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating as measured by the Three Factor Eating questionnaire (short form, TFEQ-18) in a UK cohort of middle-aged adults (the Fenland Study). Participants included 7830 individuals recruited across Cambridgeshire General Practices; 51.8 % identified as female and participants reported a mean BMI of 26.8. Unadjusted linear

Tracing the development and lifespan change of population-level structural asymmetry in the cerebral cortex.

Cortical asymmetry is a ubiquitous feature of brain organization that is subtly altered in some neurodevelopmental disorders, yet we lack knowledge of how its development proceeds across life in health. Achieving consensus on the precise cortical asymmetries in humans is necessary to uncover the developmental timing of asymmetry and the extent to which it arises through genetic and later influences in childhood. Here, we delineate population-level asymmetry in cortical thickness and surface area vertex-wise in seven datasets and chart asymmetry trajectories longitudinally across life (4-89 yea

Effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the development of white matter volume and change in executive function.

Prenatal alcohol exposure can cause a wide range of deficits in executive function that persist throughout life, but little is known about how changes in brain structure relate to cognition in affected individuals. In the current study, we predicted that the rate of white matter volumetric development would be atypical in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) when compared to typically developing children, and that the rate of change in cognitive function would relate to differential white matter development between groups. Data were available for 103 subjects [49 with FASD, 54

Baseline characteristics of the North American prodromal Synucleinopathy cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is widely considered a prodromal synucleinopathy, as most with RBD develop overt synucleinopathy within ~10 years. Accordingly, RBD offers an opportunity to test potential treatments at the earliest stages of synucleinopathy. The North American Prodromal Synucleinopathy (NAPS) Consortium has created a multisite RBD participant, primarily clinic-based cohort to better understand characteristics at diagnosis, and in future work, identify predictors of phenoconversion, develop synucleinopathy biomarkers, and enable early stage clin

A developmental examination of amygdala response to facial expressions.

Several lines of evidence implicate the amygdala in face-emotion processing, particularly for fearful facial expressions. Related findings suggest that face-emotion processing engages the amygdala within an interconnected circuitry that can be studied using a functional-connectivity approach. Past work also underscores important functional changes in the amygdala during development. Taken together, prior research on amygdala function and development reveals a need for more work examining developmental changes in the amygdala's response to fearful faces and in amygdala functional connectivity d

Interferon-β deficiency alters brain response to chronic HIV-1 envelope protein exposure in a transgenic model of NeuroHIV.

Human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) infects the central nervous system (CNS) and causes HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) in about half of the population living with the virus despite combination anti-retroviral therapy (cART). HIV-1 activates the innate immune system, including the production of type 1 interferons (IFNs) α and β. Transgenic mice expressing HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120 (HIVgp120tg) in the CNS develop memory impairment and share key neuropathological features and differential CNS gene expression with HIV patients, including the induction of IFN-stimulated g

Genital malformation: Trigger of the diagnosis of severe variants of Klinefelter syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Among the disorders of sexual development, Klinefelter syndrome and its variants are classified as an alteration in the number of sex chromosomes. These patients show signs of hypergonadotropic hypogonadism at puberty, however cases of severe variants also present neurocognitive and language problems from an early age. OBJECTIVE: To describe two patients with genital malformation with genetic diagnosis of severe variants of Klinefelter syndrome, and to review clinical and therapeutic aspects. CLINICAL CASES: Case 1: Diagnosis of atypical genitalia at birth: Small and curved pha

Report of the American Psychiatric Association Task Force on Treatment of Gender Identity Disorder.

Both the diagnosis and treatment of Gender Identity Disorder (GID) are controversial. Although linked, they are separate issues and the DSM does not evaluate treatments. The Board of Trustees (BOT) of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), therefore, formed a Task Force charged to perform a critical review of the literature on the treatment of GID at different ages, to assess the quality of evidence pertaining to treatment, and to prepare a report that included an opinion as to whether or not sufficient credible literature exists for development of treatment recommendations by the APA. Personality assessment inventory sex differences in people with epileptic and functional seizures.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown that the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) is useful in differentiating individuals with functional seizures (FS) from those with epileptic seizures (ES). In these two groups, sex differences in PAI validity and clinical subscales have not been investigated. Elucidating sex differences could improve the understanding of how males and females experience FS or ES and may improve differential diagnosis and treatment planning. METHOD: We examined sex differences across PAI scales, subscales, and validity profiles amongst adults with FS (n = 62) and ES (

Maternal-fetal immune conflict contributes to male-specific impairments in a mouse model of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) arises from genetic and environmental risk factors. One environmental factor, maternal immune activation (MIA)-in which pathogenic infection during pregnancy increases ASD risk in offspring-disproportionately affects males. However, the basis for this male-specific vulnerability and the mechanisms by which inflammatory signals cross the maternal-fetal interface to affect the male embryo remain largely unknown. Using the poly(I:C) mouse model of neurodevelopmental disorders, we characterize fetal, placental, and amniotic changes occurring within 24 hours of MIA. W

Prenatal Downregulation of CB1 Cannabinoid Receptors in the Mouse Prefrontal Cortex Disrupts Cortical Lamination and Induces a Transcriptional Signature Associated with Social Interaction Deficits.

Endocannabinoid signaling exerts a neurodevelopmental regulatory role via CB1 cannabinoid receptors (CB1Rs), which control pyramidal neuron differentiation, migration, and axonal guidance. Here, we investigated the long-lasting consequences of transient prenatal CB1R downregulation within the mouse prefrontal cortex by assessing its impact on gene expression, neuronal electrophysiological properties, and animal behavioral traits. Transient loss of CB1Rs as induced by in-utero small-interference RNA electroporation at Embryonic Day 14.5, when upper-layer neurons are generated, arrested cell mig

Shared Genetic Architecture Between COVID-19 Severity and Alzheimer's Disease Across European and African Ancestries.

The global outbreak of COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has been linked to long-term neurological complications, including an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) among older adults. However, the precise genetic impact of COVID-19 on long-term AD development remains unclear. This study leveraged genome-wide association study (GWAS) data and genotype data to explore the genetic association between AD and various COVID-19 phenotypes across European ancestry (EA) and African ancestry (AA) cohorts, and the possibility of a causal effect of COVID-19 on AD. We first calculated polygen

Long term effects of chronic intranasal oxytocin on adult pair bonding behavior and brain glucose uptake in titi monkeys (Plecturocebus cupreus).

Intranasal oxytocin (IN OXT) administration has been proposed as a pharmacological treatment for a range of biomedical conditions including neurodevelopmental disorders. However, studies evaluating the potential long-lasting effects of chronic IN OXT during development are still scarce. Here we conducted a follow-up study of a cohort of adult titi monkeys that received intranasal oxytocin 0.8 IU/kg (n = 15) or saline (n = 14) daily for six months during their juvenile period (12 to 18 months of age), with the goal of evaluating the potential long-lasting behavioral and neural effects one year

Progesterone exerts antidepressant-like effect in a mouse model of maternal separation stress through mitigation of neuroinflammatory response and oxidative stress.

Context: Experiencing early-life adversity plays a key role in the development of mood disorders in adulthood. Experiencing adversities during early life period negatively affects brain development. Sex steroids such as progesterone affect the brain structure and functions and subsequently affects behaviour. Objective: We assess the antidepressant-like effect of progesterone in a mouse model of maternal separation (MS) stress, focussing on its anti-neuroinflammatory and antioxidative effects.Materials and methods: NMRI mice were treated with progesterone (10, 50, and 100 mg/kg, i.p., respective

Mapping the serum testosterone landscape in boys aged 1-14 years: A population-based study.

UNLABELLED: Testosterone plays a vital role in the development of boys. There is a lack of age-specific reference data for testosterone representing a gap in our abilities to differentiate physiological deviations from pathological conditions such as delayed or precocious puberty, anatomical aberrations such as hypospadias or epispadias, micro-penis or buried-penis and disorders of sex development. OBJECTIVE: To establish age-specific reference values for serum testosterone in boys aged 1-14 years and generate centile curves to predict testosterone levels by age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum

Maternal obesity induces sex-specific changes in the endocannabinoid system of the hypothalamus and dorsal hippocampus of offspring associated with anxiety-like behavior in adolescent female rats.

Maternal obesity during perinatal period increases the risk of metabolic and behavioral deleterious outcomes in the offspring, since it is critical for brain development, maturation, and reorganization. These processes are highly modulated by the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which comprises the main lipid ligands anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2 (CB1R and CB2R), and several metabolizing enzymes. The ECS is overactivated in obesity and it contributes to the physiological activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, promoting stress relief. We h

The role of cerebellar FOXP1 in the development of motor and communicative behaviors in mice.

The gene FOXP2 is well established for a role in human speech and language; far less is known about FOXP1. However, this related gene has also been implicated in human language development as well as disorders associated with features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). FOXP1 protein expression has also recently been identified in the cerebellum-a neural structure previously shown to express FOXP2 protein. The current study sought to elucidate the behavioral implications of a conditional knock-out of Foxp1 using an En1-Cre driver, which is active in the entirety of the cerebellum and a subset o

Exploring Age-Related Changes in Resting State Functional Connectivity of the Amygdala: From Young to Middle Adulthood.

Functional connectivities of the amygdala support emotional and cognitive processing. Life-span development of resting-state functional connectivities (rsFC) of the amygdala may underlie age-related differences in emotion regulatory mechanisms. To date, age-related changes in amygdala rsFC have been reported through adolescence but not as thoroughly for adulthood. This study investigated age-related differences in amygdala rsFC in 132 young and middle-aged adults (19-55 years). Data processing followed published routines. Overall, amygdala showed positive rsFC with the temporal, sensorimotor a
