Links between eating disorder symptom severity, comorbid psychopathology, and risk for hospital readmission among inpatient adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

Early identification of factors that predict readmission could enhance treatment planning and reduce re-hospitalization. This study evaluated the predictive value of the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) for inpatient readmission for adolescents with AN. This retrospective longitudinal study included 226 adolescent participants admitted to an inpatient eating disorder unit. Adolescents completed the EDE-Q within the first 14 days of admission; demographic variables, anxiety and mood comorbidities, and readmission status within 1 year of discharge were obtained through chart rev

Study Protocol for the Japan Pregnancy, Eating, Activity, Cohort (J-PEACH) Study: Investigating Perinatal Maternal Lifestyle and Infant Health.

The prevalence of low-birth-weight infants has increased over the past 40 years to approximately 9-10% of Japanese live births. This study aims to identify healthy lifestyle behaviors and psychosocial factors contributing to appropriate perinatal outcomes, gestational weight gain, and postpartum weight change. The Japan Pregnancy, Eating, Activity, and Cohort study was initiated in 2020 in Tokyo, Yamagata/Miyagi, Osaka, and Fukuoka. Participants will be enrolled at approximately 12 weeks of gestation, with follow-up at 18-27 and 35-41 weeks of gestation and 1, 6, and 12 months postpartum. Appr

Effects of time-restricted eating on actigraphy-derived sleep parameters: post hoc analysis of a randomized, isocaloric feeding study.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Time-restricted eating (TRE) is a novel dietary intervention targeting weight loss and cardiometabolic risk factors. The impact of TRE on sleep patterns remains under-explored. METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of a parallel-arm, controlled feeding trial in 41 adults with obesity and prediabetes/diabetes, randomized to TRE (08:00 am-06:00 pm) or usual eating pattern (UEP; 08:00 am-12:00 am) for 12 weeks. We objectively determined sleep-wake patterns from 7-day wrist actigraphy data obtained at baseline and week 12. From this data, we derived total sleep time (TST) and sl

Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy-Eating Disorders (MIT-ED) Versus CBT-E for Adults: A Proof-of-Concept Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: There is an urgent need for psychological therapies in Eating Disorders (ED) that target both eating disorder symptoms and broader aspects of psychological functioning, such as personality disorder (PD) features. We integrated Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy, developed for treating PDs, with existing CBT techniques for eating disorders (MIT-ED). This psychotherapy targets aspects of ED that are not included in the transdiagnostic CBT-E model, specifically poor metacognition and interpersonal schemas. METHOD: A proof-of-concept randomized clinical trial (RCT) recruited 21 indivi

The Associations between Healthy Eating Patterns and Risk of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease: A Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Although several epidemiological studies have identified an inverse association between healthy dietary patterns and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)/non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), little is known about the contribution of the food component to MASLD risk and the association between dietary patterns and severity of MASLD. This study aimed to investigate the association between healthy eating patterns and MASLD risk and severity of MASLD. METHODS: A case-control study including 228 patients diagnosed with MASLD and 228 controls was conduc

Do Swedish rock-climbers exhibit more eating disorder and body dissatisfaction symptoms than non-climbers? A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: The inclusion of rock-climbing in the Olympic Games has increased participation in the sport and attention to athletes' health. In sports where the importance of low body weight is considerate, there is an increased risk of developing eating disorders (EDs). There is sparse research on EDs among rock-climbers. The primary aim was to map ED symptoms among rock-climbers compared with controls. The secondary aim was to analyze differences in body dissatisfaction. Comparisons between rock-climbing levels and sexes were performed. DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study in a larger pro

Suicide in individuals with eating disorders who had sought mental health treatment in England: a national retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although studies have suggested a high risk of suicide in people with eating disorders, most studies have focused on suicidal ideation and attempts. There is little research on the characteristics of people with eating disorders who died by suicide, nor investigation of trends over time. We aimed to compare the characteristics of patients with eating disorders who died by suicide versus patients with other mental health diagnoses who died by suicide in England and to examine the trends in rates. METHODS: In this national retrospective cohort study, data on all people (aged ≥10 yea

Early reduction in anxiety sensitivity predicts greater reduction in disordered eating and trait anxiety during treatment for bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety sensitivity (AS), the trait-like fear of symptoms of anxiety, has been associated with eating disorder (ED) pathology broadly, bulimia nervosa (BN) symptoms specifically, and the anxiety disorders that are commonly comorbid with BN. AS, especially for physical symptoms specifically, maybe a risk and maintenance factor for BN and comorbid anxiety. METHOD: Adult participants with BN (n = 44) in a clinical trial comparing CBT to mindfulness and acceptance-based treatment (MABT) reported ED symptoms, trait anxiety, and AS through treatment and follow-up. We predicted that great

Dimensional personality pathology and disordered eating in young adults: measuring the DSM-5 alternative model using the PID-5.

INTRODUCTION: The Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) is a self-report measure of personality pathology designed to measure pathological personality traits outlined in the DSM-5 alternative model of personality disorders. Within the extensive literature exploring the relationship between personality and disordered eating, there are few that explore the relationship between the PID-5 and disordered eating behaviours in a non-clinical sample of males and females: restrictive eating, binge eating, purging, chewing and spitting, excessive exercising and muscle building. METHODS: An online sur

Body dissatisfaction and disordered eating symptoms in children's daily life: Can parents protect against appearance comparison on social media?

Research suggests that body dissatisfaction is common among children. However, it remains largely unknown how body dissatisfaction occurs on a daily basis and which environmental factors are linked to this. The purpose of this study was to examine (1) state body dissatisfaction, dietary restraint, compensatory exercise and loss of control eating among children and its association with upward comparisons via social media and (2) whether trust in parents may attenuate this association. Children from 10 to 12 years old (N = 50) were assessed three times a day during a two-week period. Trust was e

Exploring Correlations of Food-Specific Disgust with Eating Disorder Psychopathology and Food Interaction: A Preliminary Study Using Virtual Reality.

The emotion of disgust is thought to play a critical role in maintaining restrictive eating among individuals with anorexia nervosa. This exploratory cross-sectional study examined correlations between food-specific trait and state disgust, eating disorder psychopathology, illness severity (body mass index: BMI), and interactions with virtual foods in people with anorexia nervosa. Food-specific trait disgust and eating disorder symptoms were measured before exposure to virtual foods in one of three virtual reality (VR) kitchens to which participants were randomly allocated. Food interactions (

Gut microbiota analysis of Blenniidae fishes including an algae-eating fish and clear boundary formation among isolated Vibrio strains.

Some marine fishes are algae-feeding, and the microorganisms in their digestive tracts produce carbohydrate hydrolyzing enzymes such as agarose and fucosidase, which are potentially interesting resource for new functional enzymes. The purpose of this study was to establish a method for identifying and utilizing characteristic bacteria from the intestines of two algae-eating fish species: Andamia tetradactylus, which exclusively eats algae on the rock surface, and stellar rockskipper Entomacrodus stellifer, which feeds on both algae and invertebrates. We tested the species composition of the in

Ketogenic diet and ketamine infusion treatment to target chronic persistent eating disorder psychopathology in anorexia nervosa: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a severe psychiatric disorder, and shape and weight concerns are often chronic despite weight normalization. No specific treatments exist for those preoccupations that interfere with recovery and trigger relapse. A case study using a ketogenic diet followed by ketamine infusions led to sustained remission in one patient with chronic AN. Here we conducted an open-label trial to test whether this response could be replicated. METHODS: Five adults weight recovered from AN but with persistent eating disorder thoughts and behaviors adopted a therapeutic ketogenic

Attention Biases for Eating Disorder-Related Stimuli Versus Social Stimuli in Adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa - An Eye-Tracking Study.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by attention biases for eating disorder-related information as well as altered attentional processing of social information. However, little is known about the interplay between the altered attentional processing of these two types of information. The present study investigates attention biases for eating disorder-related information (pictures of bodies) versus social information (pictures of faces), in adolescents with AN. Attention biases were assessed via eye-tracking during a passive-viewing task in which female bodies and faces were presented simulta

Eating disorders and subsequent risk of substance use disorders involving illicit drugs: a Danish nationwide register-based cohort study.

PURPOSE: No study has investigated the ongoing risk of substance use disorders involving illicit drugs (ISUD) after first eating disorder (ED) and whether the pattern of risk differs according to types of ED and ISUD. Therefore, we aimed to longitudinally assess the risk of a subsequent diagnosis of any ISUD (pooled category) and specific ISUD after a first-time diagnosis of anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), or unspecified ED (USED). METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using data from Danish nationwide registers identified 20,759 ED patients and 83,038 matched controls (1:4 ratio

Identification of Behavior Change Techniques From Successful Web-Based Interventions Targeting Alcohol Consumption, Binge Eating, and Gambling: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Web-based interventions are thought to overcome barriers to treatment, such as accessibility and geographical location, which can undermine the effectiveness of traditional face-to-face interventions. Owing to these features, researchers are increasingly testing the efficacy of web-based interventions as ways to reduce alcohol misuse, binge eating, and gambling. However, many web-based interventions have poorly defined mechanisms of action; therefore, it is often uncertain how they propose to bring about behavior change. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to identify effective
