Ventricular Arterial Coupling as a Marker of Early Cardiotoxicity in Survivors of Childhood Cancer.

Improved childhood cancer survival has been accompanied by substantial late morbidity and mortality related to cardiotoxic cancer therapies. We conducted a retrospective study of childhood cancer survivors (CCS) diagnosed before age 21 and followed at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM). Collected data included demographics, cancer diagnosis and treatment details, medical history, and ambulation status. Initial and most recent echocardiograms obtained at CHAM were reviewed to calculate arterial elastance (Ea), end-systolic elastance (Ees), and ventricular-arterial coupling (VAC). Meas

Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube coating effect on bacterial resistance and Ti6Al4V substrate material properties.

Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube (CI-CNT) coatings have emerged as a promising biomaterial infection prevention strategy due to their inherent topography-driven bacterial resistance. This study examined the impact of CI-CNT manufacturing methods, specifically the use of a hydrogen versus an argon carrier gas environment, on the mechanical properties and bacterial resistance of Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) coated substrates. Tensile and torsional testing, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and fracture profile analysis were used to characterize variations in substrate yield strength, ultimate tensi

Discriminating Relapsing-Remitting From Progressive Multiple Sclerosis Using Multidimensional Speech Biomarkers: An Independent Cohort Validation Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Differentiating relapsing-remitting from progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) remains a clinical challenge, often requiring complex or invasive biomarkers. This study aimed to develop a machine learning model using acoustic speech analysis to classify MS phenotypes. METHOD: A cohort of 300 consecutive people with MS (PwMS) provided speech recordings. Forty-four acoustic features were extracted. An elastic net model first identified the most relevant parameters from the development cohort (n = 200), which were then used to train six supervised ML classifiers. During the va

Deformation and phase transformation of dual-phase Ti under tension and compression process.

CONTEXT: This study utilizes molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to investigate polycrystalline dual-phase titanium (DP Ti) deformation behavior and phase transformation under tensile and compressive loading. The analysis focuses on the influence of hexagonal close-packed (HCP) phase fraction, strain rate, and temperature on the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution. The results indicate that increasing the HCP phase fraction enhances the elastic modulus (36.5%), yield strength, and strain hardening while maintaining acceptable ductility. The optimal mechanical performance is achi

Integrative analysis of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, metabolomics, and polygenic risk reveals novel metabolite associations with Alzheimer's disease.

BackgroundCerebrospinal fluid (CSF) metabolomics offers an opportunity to investigate in vivo biological pathways impacted in the human brain by Alzheimer's disease (AD). While impairments in brain glucose metabolism and lipid homeostasis are implicated in AD, the underlying metabolic pathways remain unclear. Genotype information can also be leveraged to study associations between CSF metabolites and AD genetic risk.ObjectiveTo evaluate how CSF metabolomic profiles and genetic risk are associated with AD pathology as reflected by established CSF biomarkers (Aβ, P-Tau, and T-Tau).MethodsWe coll

Quantitative Analyses of Cerebral Hemodynamics and Wave Dynamics in Essential Systemic Hypertension: A Multiscale Computational Modeling Study.

Hypertension-induced alterations in hemodynamics and wave dynamics are important pathological mechanisms for cerebrovascular diseases, vascular cognitive impairment and dementia. However, fundamental understanding of hemodynamics and wave dynamics in hypertension remains limited due to the restricted temporal and spatial resolution of current medical devices. To address the gap, this study developed a closed-loop multiscale computational modeling framework for the entire cardiovascular system. A novel "parameter assignment method" designed for diverse 0D peripheral vascular bed models across t

Silk fibroin-based hydrogels with low hysteresis, self-adhesion, and tunable ionic conductivity for wearable devices.

Silk Fibroin (SF) hydrogels are easy to functionalize and possess biocompatibility, making them highly promising for the development of flexible electronic devices and wearable equipment. However, fabricating SF-based hydrogels with multiple functions such as low hysteresis, self-adhesion, and high elasticity, while constructing flexible wearable electronic devices with high sensitivity and fidelity, remains a challenge to date. To address these issues, this work reports a one-step preparation of a fully polymer-based triple-network hydrogel through precursor solution pH pre-regulation, with p

A review of the state-of-the-art: progress in ultrasonic and acoustic techniques for quality assessment in the development and manufacturing of oral solid dosage forms - Part I: theoretical foundations and principles.

Over the past two decades, a diverse array of ultrasonic and acoustic elastic-wave techniques has been developed to non-destructively assess macro- and micro-scale properties of compressed Oral Solid Dosage (OSD) forms. These methods are increasingly recognized for their potential roles in formulation design, process development, quality evaluation, and product release. This review is presented in two parts: Part I focuses on the theoretical foundations and principles of ultrasonic and acoustic techniques, while Part II will address their practical applications and emerging directions. Impact of Collateral Vessels on Fontan Circulation: 0- to 1-Dimensional Fontan Circulation Model and Concept of Oxygen Supply and Consumption.

BACKGROUND: Patients with single ventricle often undergo the Fontan operation to alleviate cyanosis and reduce ventricle volume load. However, long-term outcomes are limited by complications and hemodynamic issues, including collateral vessels, leading to cyanosis and heart failure. Studies have demonstrated considerable blood flow through these collateral vessels; however, their hemodynamic impact on Fontan circulation remains inadequately explained from a theoretical perspective. This study aims to clarify the effects of dobutamine and vasodilators on Fontan circulation in the presence of ao

Variation in Mechanical Properties of 5.5 mm Cobalt Chromium and Titanium Spinal Rods Across Suppliers.

Cobalt chromium (CoCr) and titanium (Ti) alloys are popular spinal rod choices due to biocompatibility, less imaging artifact than stainless steel, and greater corrosion resistance. This study assesses the mechanical behavior in bending of commercially available 5.5 mm diameter CoCr and Ti spinal rods in a four-point bending configuration. For each supplier, rod segments were loaded to 20 mm of deflection with continuous load and displacement recording. Rod mechanical properties were calculated. Suppliers were compared by ANOVA, with post hoc pairwise comparisons. For CoCr rods, flexural modul

Mechanical insights into fat pads: a comparative study of infrapatellar and suprapatellar fat pads in osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common musculoskeletal disorder, primarily affecting knee joints and causing pain and disability. The infrapatellar (IFP) and the suprapatellar (SFP) fat pad are knee adipose tissues that play essential mechanical roles during articular activity but are also sources of adipokines and cytokines, contributing to OA progression. For this reason, this work aims to provide new insights into IFP and SFP implications in knee OA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: IFP and SFP tissue mechanical properties were studied through compression, indentation and shear mechanical

An innovative determination approach for the support strength of stope roof: a case study.

In this study, a novel method to determine the support strength for stope roof in room and expandable prop mining is developed. The process consists of three main steps: determining the stope roof characteristic curve, and then carrying out regional division of the stope roof characteristic curve, and finally determining the support strength of the stope roof. For the gold mine in Dandong, China, the Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) numerical simulation method is utilized, and parameters related to the numerical simulation are precisely determined to define the characteristic curve of th

Transmission electron microscopy ultrastructural characteristics of the distal middle cerebral artery in moyamoya disease.

The etiology of moyamoya disease (MMD) remains unknown. The main pathological finding is fibrocellular thickening of the intima, irregular undulation of the internal elastic lamina affecting the distal portions of the internal carotid artery and A1 and M1 segments. Our aim is to describe the histological and electron microscope ultrastructural characteristics of cortical MMD vessels (middle cerebral artery) in hemorrhagic and ischemic presentation along different Suzuki stages. From January 2022 to December 2022, we collected clinical and radiological data of 310 patients with MMD, among them

Group-theoretic analysis of symmetry-preserving deployable structures and metamaterials.

Many deployable structures in nature, as well as human-made mechanisms, preserve symmetry as their configurations evolve. Examples in nature include blooming flowers, dilation of the iris within the human eye, viral capsid maturation and molecular and bacterial motors. Engineered examples include opening umbrellas, elongating scissor jacks, variable apertures in cameras, expanding Hoberman spheres and some kinds of morphing origami structures. In these cases, the structures either preserve a discrete symmetry group or are described as an evolution from one discrete symmetry group to another of

Altering the interfacial rheology of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus with N-acetyl cysteine and cysteamine.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic lung infection due to bacterial biofilms is one of the leading causes of mortality in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. Among many species colonizing the lung airways, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are two virulent pathogens involved in mechanically robust biofilms that are difficult to eradicate using airway clearance techniques like lung lavage. To remove such biological materials, glycoside hydrolase-based compounds are commonly employed for targeting and breaking down the biofilm matrix, and subsequently increasing cell susceptibility to antibiotics.
