Topological properties of Xene tuned by perpendicular electric field and exchange field in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling.

Xene (X=Si, Ge, Sn) is a typical and promising two-dimensional topological insulator with many novel topological properties. Here, we investigate the topological properties of Xene tuned by a perpendicularly applied electric field, exchange field, and Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) using the tight-binding (TB) method. We show that in the presence of RSOC, the system can be converted from a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator into a conventional band insulator (BI) by a weak perpendicular electric field or into a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator by a weak exchange field. Additionally, a

Naming impairments evoked by focal cortical electrical stimulation in the ventral temporal cortex correlate with increased functional connectivity.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency cortical electrical stimulations (HF-CES) are the gold standard for presurgical functional mapping. In the dominant ventral temporal cortex (VTC) HF-CES can elicit transient naming impairment (eloquent sites), defining a basal temporal language area (BTLA). OBJECTIVE: Whether naming impairments induced by HF-CES within the VTC are related to a specific pattern of connectivity of the BTLA within the temporal lobe remains unknown. We addressed this issue by comparing the connectivity of eloquent and non-eloquent sites from the VTC using cortico-cortical evoked potenti

Focused electric field (FEF) ablation in a left ventricular and infrared thermal imaging model: a proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: Currently, RF ablation is limited in its ability to deliver deep lesions, as most of the energy delivered to the tissue is dissipated in the first few millimeters from the catheter tip. Focused electric field (FEF) is a novel technology with the potential to ablate deeper than currently available RF catheters. This work is the first proof of concept of FEF technology. OBJECTIVE: To introduce FEF technology and demonstrate its feasibility as an ablation tool. METHODS: We constructed a FEF catheter with a truncated dome-shaped tip, creating a toroidal ablating surface. We performed

Electrical Signal Initiates Kinetic Assembly of Collagen to Construct Optically Transparent and Geometry Customized Artificial Cornea Substitutes.

Corneal transplantation is an effective treatment for reconstructing injured corneas but is very limited due to insufficient donors, which has led to a growing demand for development of artificial corneal substitutes (ACSs). Collagen is a potential building block for ACS fabrication, whereas technically there are limited capabilities to control the collagen assembly for creating highly transparent collagen ACSs. Here, we report an electro-assembly technique to kinetically control collagen assembly on the nanoscale that allows the yielding collagen ACSs with structure determined superior optics

Electrical, Electromagnetic, Ultrasound Wave Therapies, and Electronic Implants for Neuronal Rejuvenation, Neuroprotection, Axonal Regeneration, and IOP Reduction.

The peripheral nervous system (PNS) of mammals and nervous systems of lower organisms possess significant regenerative potential. In contrast, although neural plasticity can provide some compensation, the central nervous system (CNS) neurons and nerves of adult mammals generally fail to regenerate after an injury or damage. However, use of diverse electrical, electromagnetic and sonographic energy waves are illuminating novel ways to stimulate neuronal differentiation, proliferation, neurite growth, and axonal elongation/regeneration leading to various levels of functional recovery in animals

Combined conventional speech therapy and functional electrical stimulation in acute stroke patients with dyphagia: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is the main cause of oropharyngeal neurogenic dysphagia. Electrostimulation has been used as a therapeutic tool in these cases. However, there are few studies that prove its effectiveness. We evaluated the effect of functional electrostimulation as a complement to conventional speech therapy in patients with dysphagia after a stroke in a stroke unit. METHODS: We performed a clinical, randomized, and controlled trial divided into intervention group (IG) (n = 16) and control group (CG) (n = 17). All patients were treated with conventional speech therapy, and the IG also was s

Prolonged inhibition of bladder function is evoked by low-amplitude electrical stimulation of the saphenous nerve in urethane-anesthetized rats.

To better understand the effects of saphenous nerve (SN) stimulation on bladder function, we investigated the duration of electrical stimulation as a key variable in eliciting urodynamic changes. SN stimulation is a novel approach to electrically modulating bladder function. In previous animal studies, bladder-inhibitory responses were evoked by low-amplitude (25 μA) stimulus pulses applied in short-duration (10 min) trials and at frequencies between 10 and 20 Hz. Experiments were performed in urethane-anesthetized rats that were separated into three groups: intravesical saline infusion + SN s

Firefighters' Clothing Contamination in Fires of Electric Vehicle Batteries and Photovoltaic Modules-Literature Review and Pilot Tests Results.

The electric vehicle (EV) market, together with photovoltaic (PV) installations continues to develop at a pace. However, there are concerns that EV and PV installation fires may create more harmful substances than other types of fire. PV modules and car battery fires emit a range of carcinogenic and highly toxic compounds that are not yet fully understood and may pose a threat to firefighters' health. This also raises the question of the impact on firefighters' clothing and the safe handling and cleaning after such fires. This article presents a literature and standards review of the firefight

Ageing Increases Cardiac Electrical Remodelling in Rats and Mice via NOX4/ROS/CaMKII-Mediated Calcium Signalling.

OBJECTIVE: Ageing is one of the risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases including cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. Ageing-related cardiac dysfunction involves a complicated pathophysiological progress. Abnormal membrane voltage and Ca2+ dynamics in aged cardiomyocytes contribute to ageing-related arrhythmias. However, its underlying mechanisms have not been well clarified. METHODS: Young and old rats or mice were included in this study. Cardiac electrophysiological properties and functions were assessed by ECG, echocardiography, and ex vivo heart voltage and Ca2+ optical ma

Neutral auditory words immediately followed by painful electric shock may show reduced next-day recollection.

In this study, we investigated the effect of experimentally delivered acute pain on memory. Twenty-five participants participated in experimental sessions on consecutive days. The first session involved a categorization task to encourage memory encoding. There were two conditions, presented in randomized order, in which participants listened to a series of words, which were repeated three times. In one condition, one-third of the word items were immediately followed by a painful electrical shock. This word-shock pairing was consistent across repetition and the pain-paired items were presented

Quantifying Arms and Legs Contributions during Repetitive Electrically-Assisted Sit-To-Stand Exercise in Paraplegics: A Pilot Study.

Execution of Sit-to-Stand (SitTS) in incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) patients involves motor function in both upper and lower extremities. The use of arm support, in particular, is a significant assistive factor while executing SitTS movement in SCI population. In addition, the application of functional electrical stimulation (FES) onto quadriceps and gluteus maximus muscles is one of the prescribed management for incomplete SCI to improve muscle action for simple lower limb movements. However, the relative contribution of upper and lower extremities during SitTS has not been thoroughly in

Continuous heart rate dynamics preceding in-hospital pulseless electrical activity or asystolic cardiac arrest of respiratory etiology.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory failure is a common cause of pulseless electrical activity (PEA) and asystolic cardiac arrest, but the changes in heart rate (HR) pre-arrest are not well described. We describe HR dynamics prior to in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) among PEA/asystole arrest patients with respiratory etiology. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we evaluated 139 patients with 3-24 hours of continuous electrocardiogram data recorded preceding PEA/asystole IHCA from 2010-2017. We identified respiratory failure cases by chart review and evaluated electrocardiogram data to identify patt

Background suppression of electrical activity is a potential biomarker of subsequent brain injury in a rat model of neonatal hypoxia-ischemia.

Electrographic seizures and abnormal background activity in the neonatal electroencephalogram (EEG) may differentiate between harmful versus benign brain insults. Using two animal models of neonatal seizures, electrical activity was recorded in freely behaving rats and examined quantitatively during successive time periods with field-potential recordings obtained shortly after the brain insult (i.e., 0-4 days). Single-channel, differential recordings with miniature wireless telemetry were used to analyze spontaneous electrographic seizures and background suppression of electrical activity afte

Electrical field stimulated modulation of cell fate of pre-osteoblasts on PVDF/BT/MWCNT based electroactive biomaterials.

The present study reports the impact of the interplay between electroactive properties of the biomaterials and electrical stimulation (ES) toward the cell proliferation, migration and maturation of osteoprogenitors (preosteoblasts; MC3T3-E1) on the electroactive poly (vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF)-based composites. The barium titanate (BaTiO3; BT; 30 wt%) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT; 3 wt%) were introduced into the PVDF via melt mixing, which led to an enhancement of the dielectric permittivity, electrical conductivity, and surface roughness. We also present the design and developm
