Berberine-Functionalized Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite for Enhanced Corrosion Protection of Epoxy-Coated Copper in Marine Environments.

This study introduces a novel anticorrosion coating for copper based on an epoxy matrix reinforced with a berberine-loaded graphene oxide (BBR@GO) nanocomposite. The BBR@GO was synthesized via a simple, non-covalent functionalization method, leveraging π-π stacking interactions between the planar berberine molecule and the graphene oxide surface. The successful loading of berberine was confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The BBR@GO nanocomposite was incorporated into an epoxy resin at 0.1

Dawn of the dread: threatening cinematic virtual reality environments enhance general but not specific pavlovian-instrumental transfer.

INTRODUCTION: Pavlovian-Instrumental Transfer (PIT) exemplifies how Pavlovian-motivational influences modulate goal-directed behavior, yielding outcome-specific (specific PIT) and general (general PIT) transfer. General PIT is commonly interpreted as outcome-general invigoration and is sensitive to stress. However, human PIT research typically uses visual, appetitive procedures, whereas rodent PIT research often uses auditory cues, limiting translation. We tested whether cue modality, along with additional factors such as immersive threat contexts, modulates PIT, and whether virtual reality (V

Inactivation mechanisms of cold plasma on Bacillus cereus biofilms and its application in simulated meat processing environments.

Bacterial biofilms are a common source of contamination in the food industry, often forming on surfaces such as equipment and pipelines, and contributing to the spread of foodborne diseases. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) in inactivating Bacillus cereus biofilms on glass surfaces and to explore the underlying sterilization mechanisms. Meanwhile, the formation conditions of biofilms in the beef slaughtering and processing environments are simulated to assess the application potential of plasma technology in the food industry. Factors that contribute to collision avoidance behaviours involving a single pedestrian versus a group of pedestrians in a natural environment.

Along busy walking paths many pedestrians walk in a group, thus challenging the collision avoidance behaviours of both the group and individual pedestrians. Here we sought to determine what factors contribute to these behaviours in a real-world environment. We hypothesized that pedestrian group size, spatial separation between parties, presence of an additional interferer not involved in the interaction, pedestrian distractedness, constraints to a pedestrian's mobility (i.e., holding or pushing an object), and pedestrian age would significantly influence the likelihood and extent of path devia

Static-electricity-induced luminescence trajectory tracking: A paradigm for noncontact human-machine interaction in dark environments.

Multiscenario adaptability is a core target of emerging human-machine interaction (HMI) technologies, but conventional visual HMI relies on ambient light illumination, failing to adapt to low-/no-light scenarios. Here, we propose a static-electricity-induced luminescence (SEL) trajectory tracking model, and develop a portable SEL platform integrated with SrAl2O4:Eu2+/polydimethylsiloxane film, featuring 5 to 50 kV operating voltage, 13 mm noncontact distance, ≥150-day stability, 400 K thermal tolerance, and <1 nA body current for high biosafety. Wide-Range Adaptive Metal Oxide for Hydrogen Sulfide Detection From Earth to Space-Like Environments.

Chemiresistive gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides for toxic gas detection are widely explored for terrestrial applications under ambient environments, but their potential in extraterrestrial applications remains underexplored. Herein, we developed porous Cu-doped SnO2 microspheres, enabling high sensitivity and selectivity toward hydrogen sulfide (H2S), from the ambient air (25°C, 105 Pa) to extreme conditions (-40°C, ∼10- 4 Pa) designed to simulate the space-like oxygen defects and cryogenic environments. Hierarchical porosity enables efficient gas diffusion across pressure regi

Analysis of First and Second Sleep Environments in Unexplained Sudden Deaths in Infants Based on Scene Reenactment Data.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that a safe sleep environment consist of an infant lying supine on a separate, uncluttered, approved sleep surface. Infant awakenings may lead to moving the infant from the initial sleep environment to a second one. The Connecticut Office of the Chief Medical Examiner electronic database was searched from 2018 through 2022 for infant deaths with non-homicidal manner in which scene reenactments were performed; 87 such deaths were identified. The most common causes of death were unsafe sleep environments (64.4%) and asphyxia (21.8%). Of the tot

Heat stress responses of plants during adaptation to high temperature environments: A review of recent advances and insights.

Plants, as sessile organisms, continuously encounter diverse environmental challenges, often experiencing multiple abiotic stresses during their development and growth. Among these stress events, heat has emerged as an increasingly severe factor because of global warming and currently poses a major threat to plant development, crop productivity, and agricultural sustainability. As a heat stress response, plants have evolved multilayered sensing and signaling systems that perceive heat cues and activate downstream protective and adaptive programs. This review summarizes recent knowledge regardi

Grand canonical equilibrium unifies quantum electrodynamics and statistical mechanics in wet electrolytic environments at room temperature.

Quantum rate (QR) theory has previously shown that the charge-relaxation resistance of ferrocene redox monolayers is locked at Rq = h/2e2 ≈ 12.9 kΩ at room temperature, and that electron-transfer rates are accessible from equilibrium quantum capacitance without kinetic fitting. What has remained without a first-principles thermodynamic explanation is why a room-temperature ionic bath sustains rather than destroys quantum coherence. Here, we provide that mechanism. By applying the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to the grand canonical equilibrium of an electrochemical junction, we show that min

Current research on the HIF-2α-EPO-Hb axis in hypoxic environments: from molecular mechanisms to clinical.

Hypoxic environments modulate downstream gene expression via activation of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) signaling pathway, which facilitates adaptive responses to low oxygen. Under hypoxic conditions, HIF-2α is stabilized and translocated to the nucleus, where it binds to hypoxia-response elements and upregulates transcription of the erythropoietin (EPO) gene. Increased EPO stimulates red blood cell production in the bone marrow, raising hemoglobin (Hb) levels to improve oxygen transport. This review examines the principal regulatory pathway, the Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-2α-Erythropoieti

Evaluating the efficacy of delafloxacin and combination therapy against Staphylococcus aureus Biofilms: insights into activity in acidic environments.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major contributor to biofilm-associated infections, which complicate the treatment of chronic conditions like osteomyelitis and prosthetic infections. This study aimed to evaluate the activity of delafloxacin, a novel fluoroquinolone, against biofilm-forming S. aureus strains, including methicillin-resistant and methicillin-sensitive isolates. Delafloxacin’s efficacy was compared with traditional antibiotics (vancomycin, linezolid, doxycycline, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and rifampicin) using minimal inhibitory concentration assays, including testing at different

A Nature-Inspired Hybrid Heuristic for Orchestrating the Self-Deployment of Mobile Supply Robots in Communication-Contested Environments.

We present a nature-inspired approach for self-organizing logistics in contested environments characterized by uncertainty. The presented approach leverages territorial partitioning principles observed in natural collectives and systems. The logistics challenge addressed involves autonomously deploying a fleet of uncrewed mobile robots tasked with dynamically adjusting their positions to optimally service spatially and temporally fluctuating demands. Unlike traditional logistics, our approach is largely decentralized, relying almost exclusively on local interactions and decision-making. Monte
