The gait lab effect: symmetry restoration strategy after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is different in natural environments than the gait laboratory.

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a promising pathway to extend functional-recovery assessment after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) beyond laboratory or in-clinic evaluations. Yet, it remains unclear how joint kinematics change in natural environments over time. In this study, 26 participants wore five sticker-like IMUs on the pelvis, thighs, and shanks for up to seven days, three and nine months after their surgery. They also participated in a laboratory assessment at each timepoint using standard marker- and inertial-based motion capture systems. Knee extension excurs

Supporting self-determination in ageing adults with mild-to-moderate intellectual disabilities through virtual reality environments.

Background: The increasing longevity of people with intellectual disabilities has intensified the need to promote participation, autonomy and quality of life in later adulthood. However, ageing often occurs in contexts with limited opportunities for decision-making and personal agency. Virtual reality offers psychologically safe environments to rehearse complex actions and strengthen beliefs in capability. Methods: A qualitative, theory-informed design was conducted with 45 adults aged 50-78 years with mild-to-moderate intellectual disability who completed a 12-week immersive virtual reality p

Microplastics in urban environments: The dog as a bioindicator of exposure and human gastrointestinal risk.

INTRODUCTION: Microplastics, particles smaller than 5 mm, are an environmental and public health concern due to their widespread presence in domestic environments. They affect humans and animals that share water, food, and environments. In Santo Domingo (Ecuador), companion dogs can act as environmental sentinels, reflecting exposure to these contaminants and their potential association to health problems. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate microplastics in dog feces in Santo Domingo and their possible relationship with domestic plastic waste and gastrointestinal diseases in their human tutors. MATERIAL

Tonsillar Tfh cells contribute to the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy in collaboration with memory B cells.

INTRODUCTION: Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is a chronic glomerular disease characterized by mesangial IgA deposition, which can progress to end-stage renal failure. Tonsillectomy is used as a therapeutic intervention to slow disease progression and provide early clinical benefit. However, the immune mechanisms within the palatine tonsils that contribute to IgAN pathogenesis remain incompletely understood. METHODS: To define the tonsillar immune environment that regulates pathological antibody production, we analyzed T and B lymphocyte subsets in relation to renal function. We also cond

Housing and malaria risk: Evidence across ecological and climatic gradients in sub-Saharan Africa.

Malaria risk in sub-Saharan Africa is patterned not only by ecological suitability but also by unequal access to protective domestic environments. Housing is increasingly recognized as a social determinant of health that can structure exposure to infectious bites, yet evidence remains limited on whether housing-associated differences persist across heterogeneous transmission ecologies. Pooled DHS and MIS data (17 countries, 2006-2022; n=206,723) were analysed using logistic regression to predict positive malaria rapid diagnostic test (RDT), adjusting for child and household characteristics and

An Overview of Mobile Colistin Resistance (mcr) Genes in Gram-Negative Bacilli.

The increasing spread of mobile colistin resistance (mcr) genes is becoming a major concern in the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacilli. Colistin is often used as a last treatment option, but the emergence of mcr genes is reducing its effectiveness. These genes are most commonly found in bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Salmonella, and have also been reported, though less frequently, in organisms like Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This review provides an overview of the occurrence, diversity, and mechanisms of mcr genes in Gram-neg

Novel insights into quorum-sensing microbe combined with dimethylsulfoniopropionate enhancing bioremediation of oil-contaminated sediment under typical deep-sea conditions: The performances and molecular mechanisms.

The deep-sea environment poses significant metabolic challenges to microorganisms, rendering the bioremediation of oil pollution even more formidable. Quorum sensing (QS) signals are known to assist microbiota in maintaining their function and stability under toxic contaminants. Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is an ideal cryoprotectant and stress protectant, enhancing microbial resilience in extreme environments. Given these, the comprehensive investigations on the application of QS bacteria and DMSP in restoring oil-polluted sediment were conducted at deep-sea microcosm over two months. Fi

An Examination of Acoustic Neuroprotection in the Neonate: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss in neonates is more than 100 times that of the general pediatric population. Research suggests that there is a large amount of toxic noise exposure for these neonates in the neonatal intensive care unit and in the transport environments. Thus, acoustic neuroprotection, or auditory protection and support of neurodevelopment, is an important concept, particularly for neonates. PURPOSE: A systematic review of the literature was conducted to determine the possibility of successfully supporting acoustic neuroprotection and decreasing the ambient noise level to the recommen

Pharmacotherapeutic strategies to promote regulatory T cell function in autoimmunity.

Autoimmune diseases arise when self-antigen-specific T and B cells escape central and peripheral mechanisms of tolerance. One such mechanism is control of autoreactivity by regulatory T cells (Tregs), which have an essential role in suppressing autoimmunity. Consequently, there is significant interest in developing ways to boost or restore the function of Tregs in order to prevent or treat autoimmunity, induce tolerance, and thus reduce the reliance on broadly immunosuppressive agents. Strategies include enhancing the numbers and/or function of Tregs directly in vivo or via adoptive cell thera

Scientific and Regulatory Perspectives on Chemical Risk Assessment of Pesticides in the European Union.

People are exposed to pesticides daily through food, drinking water, and the environment, both in urban and rural settings. These chemicals, while offering economic and agricultural benefits through pest control and increased productivity, may pose a growing risk to human health and ecosystem biodiversity. While the European regulatory framework offers a robust foundation for risk assessment, significant limitations persist, especially in addressing cumulative exposure, low-dose effects, and chemical mixtures. This review focuses on selected scientific and regulatory challenges by reviewing re

Flagellar dynamics and entanglement of E.coli bacteria in polymeric hydrogel.

Motility is important for bacteria for their survival, adaptation, and pathogenesis, especially in complex environments such as mucus, tissues, and biofilms. Although bacterial motility has been extensively studied based on imaging and tracking bacterial cell bodies, how the behavior and dynamics of the flagellar filaments of bacteria are affected by complex environments remains largely unexplored. To address this knowledge gap, we exploited site-directed mutagenesis and specific fluorescence labeling and directly visualized the flagellar filaments of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria in pol

Modulation of immune gene expression profile in Labeo catla with chronic toxicity to emerging endocrine disruptors through a multiorgan approach.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the aquatic environment are an emerging concern and can lead to adverse health effects on humans and aquatic life. EDCsare ubiquitous in several daily use and personal care products and ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems. The aquatic ecosystems also serve as major sinks of EDCs and have even been found to accumulate in aquatic organisms. Fish are an important sentinel species in the aquatic system and are a reliable indication of environmental water pollution. In the present study, we have assessed the immunotoxicity effects of three important EDCs, i.e.,

3-Carboxyphenylboronic acid functionalized polydopamine-coated cellulose nanocrystals as a pH-responsive nanocarrier for targeted curcumin delivery.

Targeted and stimuli-responsive drug delivery systems (DDS) hold significant potential for improving therapeutic efficacy and mitigating adverse effects in cancer treatment. Here, we developed a pH-responsive nanocarrier through a surface modification strategy, which enables active targeting of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells for the delivery of drug curcumin (Cur), a poorly water-soluble therapeutic agent. Briefly, a polydopamine (PDA) layer was first deposited onto the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) via the self-polymerization of dopamine hydrochloride. Subsequently, 3-Carboxy

Rapid Colorimetric Detection of Sulfite in Red Wine Using Alginate-Copper Laccase Nanozyme with Smartphone as an Optical Readout.

Compared with the conventional analytical methods, nanozyme-based colorimetric sensors offer simpler and more accessible solutions for point-of-need food safety monitoring. Herein, Alginate-Cu (AlgCu) is reported as a robust laccase mimetic nanozyme for the colorimetric detection of sulfite in red wine, a common preservative in winemaking. AlgCu represents a rational design of nanozymes where the multifunctional group alginate is used as a coordination environment for the Cu catalytic center, mimicking the amino acids microenvironment in the natural laccase. The laccase activity of the AlgCu i

Metagenomics unveils the role of hospitals and wastewater treatment plants on the environmental burden of antibiotic resistance genes and opportunistic pathogens.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health challenge, with hospitals and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) serving as significant pathways for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This study investigates the potential of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) as an early warning system for assessing the burden of AMR at the population level. In this comprehensive year-long study, effluent was collected weekly from three large hospitals, and treated and untreated wastewater were collected monthly from three associated community WWTPs. Metagenomic analysis revealed a si

The Beneficial Role of the Thyroid Hormone Receptor Beta 2 (thrb2) in Facilitating the First Feeding and Subsequent Growth in Medaka as Fish Larval Model.

During the early growth stages of fish larvae, there are significant challenges to their viability, so improving their visual environment is essential to promoting their growth and survival. Following the successful knockout of thyroid hormone receptor beta 2 (thrb2) using Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/Cas9 technology, there was an increase in the expression of UV opsin (short-wave-sensitive 1, sws1), while the expression of other cone opsins was significantly decreased. Further analysis of the retinal structure demonstrated that the thrb2 knockout resulted
