Heavy metal contamination in soil and vegetables: a health risk assessment from urban areas of Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Rapid industrialization, urban expansion, and inadequate waste management in the peri-urban areas of Sylhet city, Bangladesh, have raised concerns regarding heavy metal accumulation in agricultural soils and vegetables and their potential implications for human health. However, information on heavy metal transfer from soil to edible crops and the associated health risks in this rapidly developing region remains limited. This study assessed heavy metal concentrations in peri-urban agricultural soils and commonly consumed vegetables and evaluated their potential human health risks. A total of 60

Constraining combustion efficiency and CO to CO2 emission ratio in the Yangtze River Delta region by using high-altitude atmospheric observations.

Carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are key tracers when evaluating atmospheric pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, with their enhancement ratio (ΔCO:ΔCO2) serving as a widely used metric for assessing combustion efficiency and estimating emissions across major industrial sectors at different spatial scales. However, most previous studies have been conducted based on near-surface observations (i.e. a few meters above ground), limiting the spatial representativeness of emission sources. In contrast, high-altitude mountain observations can provide a more comprehensive perspective f

Intersecting Pathways: Exploring the Link Between Balkan Endemic Nephropathy and Distribution of Aristolochia clematitis , Air Pollution and Pliocene Lignite Coal.

Balkan Endemic Nephropathy (BEN) is a chronic kidney disease with high morbidity and mortality in certain rural areas of Southeast Europe. While the exposure to Aristolochic Acids (AAs), phytotoxins from Aristolochia clematitis plant, has been confirmed as the direct cause, the potential roles of carcinogenic compounds and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) originating from air pollution and Pliocene lignite coal deposits remain insufficiently explored. We applied Monte Carlo simulations to examine the co-occurrence of BEN settlements with (1) the predicted presence of A. clematitis plant

Seasonal patterns and ecological risks of antibiotics in municipal wastewater treatment plants and a receiving river in Northeast China.

Antibiotic contamination in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and receiving rivers is of increasing concern in cold-region urban aquatic environments. This study investigated 10 antibiotics in two municipal wastewater treatment plants and a shared receiving river in Changchun, Northeast China, over four seasons from July 2024 to April 2025. The plants comprised three treatment lines: anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment followed by clarification, filtration, and ozonation; anaerobic/anoxic/oxic treatment followed by clarification, cloth-media filtration, and ultraviolet disinfection; and an integ

A new perspective for research on the mechanism and kinetic model of aggregation between coastal spilled oil and suspended sediment.

Understanding oil spill behavior in estuarine and coastal systems requires knowledge of oil-mineral aggregate (OMA) formation, as this process significantly governs the transport of floating oil. Current understanding of OMA formation remains superficial, lacking in-depth analysis of underlying micromechanisms. Moreover, existing models rely solely on mineral concentration, resulting in limited applicability. In this study, the aggregation between moderately dispersed oil and various minerals was investigated through mesoscale simulation experiments conducted in a wave tank. Physicochemical an

Environmental investigation of a hepatitis A outbreak associated with spring water consumption in an Anabaptist community: Kentucky, 2018-2019.

In 2019, a hepatitis A outbreak in an Anabaptist community was reported to the Kentucky Department for Public Health. Epidemiological data suggested untreated spring water as a potential outbreak exposure. An environmental investigation was conducted to evaluate this less common hepatitis A virus (HAV) exposure source. We collected water samples from the main spring used for drinking and produce irrigation by the primary household where cases were identified, from springs feeding the main spring, and from the household's gray water discharge and human waste systems. Samples were tested for HAV

Improving the source apportionment method through temperature and attenuation correction for pharmaceuticals and personal care products in surface water.

Quantitatively identifying emission sources of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) is crucial for controlling PPCP contamination, and receptor models have been extensively applied in surface water for source apportionment. However, the resolution of receptor models is limited due to the neglect of indicator-PPCP characteristic variations in emission sources and receiving water. Herein, we propose a strategy to improve the method resolution via correction coefficients that elaborate on tunable variables reflecting climate impacts and in-stream attenuations. Temperature and attenu

Simultaneous detection of protozoa, bacteria, and viruses from environmental water through membrane-adsorption followed by direct nucleic acid extraction.

Waterborne outbreaks caused by protozoan, bacterial, and viral pathogens continue to pose serious public health threats. However, comprehensive monitoring of all three major pathogen types remains uncommon, primarily due to the technical difficulty of simultaneously concentrating and characterizing these diverse microorganisms from a single water sample. Here, we evaluated a membrane adsorption followed by bead-beating-based direct nucleic acid extraction for its sensitivity in detecting waterborne pathogens. We further applied the optimized protocol to river water samples. Our results demonst

How stratospheric intrusion modulates the optimal mitigation pathway for ozone under sharp emission reductions.

The prevention and control of ozone (O3) pollution is a critical foundation for achieving the Chinese government's strategy of coordinated improvement in pollution reduction and carbon mitigation. As the largest natural source of tropospheric O3, stratospheric intrusion (SI) poses unforeseen additional challenges for O3 pollution control. The abrupt lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic provided a striking real-world scenario for studying the impact of SI on O3 control strategies amid dramatic emission reductions. Multiple diagnostic tools quantified the impact of SI in two representative Yun

Atmospheric Dry and Lead Deposition in an Arid Mexican City: Legacy of Smelting and Leaded Gasoline.

Torreón, located in central-northern Mexico, is a semiarid, dusty city affected by particulate matter and lead (Pb) pollution. This pollution is largely driven by the Met-Mex Peñoles smelting and refining complex (operating since 1901), one of the largest Ag–Cd–Pb–Zn facilities in the world, as well as historical leaded gasoline combustion (1920s–1997). In this study, we focus on atmospheric dry and lead deposition measurements in the urban area in Torreón. Atmospheric dry deposits (ADD) were collected under typical climatic conditions between January and May in 2015 and 2017. Atmospheric dry
