In the etiology of dementia several genetic and various environmental factors are assumed to interact. Most epidemiological studies on risk factors have focused on "constitutional" factors like age, sex, birth order, dementia in the family and "life style" factors like smoking and alcohol consumption. Only few studies have investigated the role of psychosocial factors at work and during leisure time on the risk to develop dementia. Our paper gives a systematic review of all published results of controlled studies about psychosocial risk factors. A positive association has been observed between

Psoriasis is a chronic, autoimmune skin disease driven by persistent inflammation and immune dysfunction that severely impairs quality of life and is associated with serious comorbidities, including psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and depression. Emerging epidemiological evidence suggests an association between psoriasis and an increased risk of certain malignancies, such as breast cancer (BC) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), although the strength and consistency of these associations vary across study designs, and the underlying thrombo-inflammatory mechanisms remain inc

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The Netherlands faces zoonotic disease risks due to its dense human and livestock populations. The 2009 H1N1 outbreak highlighted the pandemic potential of influenza virus reassortment. Effective preparedness requires integrating behavioural and epidemiological models. Human behaviour, shaped by personal, social, and institutional factors, is critical in detecting, intervening, and treating diseases. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), a framework was developed integrating knowledge from the TPB to improve early detection and response, using (zoonotic) swine

BACKGROUND: The circulation of tick-borne pathogens is influenced by the availability of ticks, the hosts of ticks and pathogens, and the environmental conditions that affect both the ticks and their hosts. Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and transmitted by Ixodes spp. ticks, is the most common tick-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere. Understanding the spatio-temporal dynamics of human LB incidence regarding abundance of ticks and hosts and environmental factors is essential for effective disease risk management.
METHODS: We analyzed long-term (1997-2018

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence of oral, metabolic, circulatory, and nutritional diseases has tended to increase globally. As these diseases have common contributing factors, such as unhealthy diets, evaluating their epidemiological trends and the relation between them is relevant. In Colombia, the Ministry of Health records the frequency of consultation for these diseases through the Integrated Social Protection Information System. It facilitates the evaluation of their epidemiological behavior at the population level.
AIM: To analyze and correlate the burden of oral diseases (caries and periodonti

Maternal sepsis results in poor outcomes such as fetal or maternal death. The incidence and mortality rates of maternal sepsis vary in different places because of differences in economic development, race and medical conditions. Identifying the clinical features and determining possible mechanisms for avoiding morbidity and preventing poor outcomes would benefit committed patients. Therefore, this was an epidemiological study at a maternity transfer center in Southeast China that aimed to identify local disease features of maternal sepsis. To investigate the incidence and risk factors associat

PURPOSE: Cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) is the second most common peripheral nerve entrapment syndrome. However, existing epidemiological evidence regarding the estimated incidence of the CuTS disease burden in specific populations is sparse, especially among the U.S. military. The purpose of this study was to describe the demographics and determine the incidence of CuTS among active duty U.S. military service members.
METHODS: All first-time occurrences for CuTS among military members were identified using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, clinical modification code 3

One hundred thirty-two children who attended a research day-care center were studied to determine whether passive tobacco smoke exposure was associated with an increased rate of otitis media with effusion or with an increased number of days with otitis media with effusion during the first 3 years of life. Based on preliminary studies, a serum cotinine concentration of greater than or equal to 2.5 ng/mL was considered indicative of exposure to tobacco smoke. Otitis media with effusion was diagnosed using pneumatic otoscopy by nurse practitioners and pediatricians who reviewed the children's hea

BACKGROUND: Some studies suggest that weight gain in childhood may increase the risk of chronic diseases in adulthood, and recent studies have noticed that the timing of weight gain may be related to its long-term consequence. However, weight gain in childhood has clear short-term benefits, and the literature on the pro and cons of weight gain in childhood is limited.

BACKGROUND: Pathologic differences have been reported among breast tumors when comparing ethnic populations. Limited research has been done to evaluate the ethnic-specific relationships between breast cancer risk factors and the pathologic features of breast tumors.
METHODS: Given that genetic variation may contribute to ethnic-related etiologic differences in breast cancer, we hypothesized that tumor characteristics differ according to family history of breast cancer among Hispanic and non-Hispanic White (NHW) women. Logistic regression models were used to compute odds ratios (OR) and 95% co
