Correlation between second and first primary cancer: systematic review and meta-analysis of 9 million cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: Many survivors of a first primary cancer (FPCs) are at risk of developing a second primary cancer (SPC), with effects on patient prognosis. Primary cancers have different frequencies of specific SPC development and the development of SPCs may be closely related to the FPC. The aim of this study was to explore possible correlations between SPCs and FPCs. METHODS: Relevant literature on SPCs was retrospectively searched and screened from four databases, namely, PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and PMC. Data on the number of patients with SPC in 28 different organ sites were also coll

Immune Response in Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to comprehensively examine the immune response following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and how its disruption can impact healing and recovery. RECENT FINDINGS: The immune response is now considered a key element in the pathophysiology of TBI, with consequences far beyond the acute phase after injury. A delicate equilibrium is crucial for a healthy recovery. When this equilibrium is disrupted, chronic inflammation and immune imbalance can lead to detrimental effects on survival and disability. Globally, traumatic brain injury (TBI) imposes a substantial burde

Maternal exposure to fine particulate matter in the air and risk for fetal congenital heart defects: A case-control study.

Prior research into the association between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and the risk for fetal congenital heart defect (CHD) has yielded inconclusive and conflicting results. More epidemiologic evidence from different regions is necessary. A case-control study was conducted with 360 CHD cases and 3600 healthy newborns. Both the cases and the controls were registered by the mothers in the Prenatal Health Care System during the first trimester and gave birth at hospitals in the Tongzhou District of Beijing between 2013 and 2018. Information on PM2.5 was obtained from satellite remot

Targeting factor XI and factor XIa to prevent thrombosis.

Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) that inhibit the coagulation proteases thrombin or factor Xa (FXa) have replaced warfarin and other vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) for most indications requiring long-term anticoagulation. In many clinical situations, DOACs are as effective as VKAs, cause less bleeding, and do not require laboratory monitoring. However, because DOACs target proteases that are required for hemostasis, their use increases the risk of serious bleeding. Concerns over therapy-related bleeding undoubtedly contribute to undertreatment of many patients who would benefit from anticoagul

Viral shedding and environmental dispersion of two clade 2.3.4.4b H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza viruses in experimentally infected mule ducks: implications for environmental sampling.

High pathogenicity avian influenza viruses (HPAIVs) have caused major epizootics in recent years, with devastating consequences for poultry and wildlife worldwide. Domestic and wild ducks can be highly susceptible to HPAIVs, and infection leads to efficient viral replication and massive shedding (i.e., high titres for an extended time), contributing to widespread viral dissemination. Importantly, ducks are known to shed high amounts of virus in the earliest phase of infection, but the dynamics and impact of environmental contamination on the epidemiology of HPAIV outbreaks are poorly understoo

Whole genome sequencing unravels cryptic circulation of divergent dengue virus lineages in the rainforest region of Nigeria.

Dengue is often misclassified and underreported in Africa due to inaccurate differential diagnoses of nonspecific febrile illnesses such as malaria, sparsity of diagnostic testing and poor clinical and genomic surveillance. There are limited reports on the seroprevalence and genetic diversity of dengue virus (DENV) in humans and vectors in Nigeria. In this study, we investigated the epidemiology and genetic diversity of dengue in the rainforest region of Nigeria. We screened 515 febrile patients who tested negative for malaria and typhoid fever in three hospitals in Oyo and Ekiti States in sou

Impact of cancer and other causes of death on mortality of cancer patients: A study based on Japanese population-based registry data.

Cancer registry data provide a very important source of information for improving our understanding of the epidemiology of various cancers. In this work, we estimated the 5-year crude probabilities of death from cancer and from other causes for five common cancers, namely stomach, lung, colon-rectum, prostate and breast, in Japan, using population-based registry data. Based on data on 344 676 patients diagnosed with one of these cancers between 2006 and 2008 in 21 prefectures participating in the Monitoring of Cancer Incidence in Japan (MCIJ) and followed-up for at least 5 years, we used a fle

Diagnosing Cystic Fibrosis in Adults.

Diagnosing cystic fibrosis (CF) in adulthood is not a rare occurrence for CF centers despite the popular belief that the diagnosis is achieved almost universally in childhood by means of newborn screening or early clinical presentation. The purpose of this review article is to highlight specific considerations of adult diagnosis of CF. Obtaining a diagnosis of CF at any age is exceptionally important to ensure optimal treatment, monitoring, and support. In the new era of more personalized treatment with the advent of transformative therapies targeting the underlying protein defect, accurate di

Species and antifungal susceptibility profile of agents causing vulvovaginal candidiasis in a military population: a cross-sectional study.

Military women on active duty are exposed to constant physical and mental demands, which may predispose them to some infection risks, including vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), a pathology considered a global public health problem. To monitor the prevalent and emerging pathogens in VVC, this study aimed to evaluate the distribution of yeast species and their in vitro antifungal susceptibility profile. We studied 104 vaginal yeast specimens obtained during routine clinical examinations. The population was attended at the Medical Center of the Military Police, São Paulo, Brazil, and was divided i
