BACKGROUND: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare hereditary disorder that arises from heterozygous loss of function mutations in the runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) gene. As RUNX2 is mainly expressed in osteoblasts, CCD typically affects the skeletal and dental systems. Few studies have investigated RUNX2 mutation effects on non-skeletal systems. This study reviewed the fate of titanium plates used to correct maxillofacial trauma in 76 patients to define risk factors for plate removal. A patient presented complex fractures of the face and skull with leg trauma after a traffic accident. Maxillofacial repair used sophisticated procedures: bone grafts, muscle flaps and multiple osteotomies. After reconstructing the mid face and the mandibular repair, bone implants were used to stabilize the maxillary prosthesis. The psychological and functions problems raised in this case are discussed considering the occupational and social outcome.

Little is known about the results of surgical management of late craniofacial abnormalities arising after irradiation of the head and face for treatment of childhood cancers. The clinical records of 10 children (4 males and 6 females) who received 4500 to 6500 rads (mean 5160 rads) of craniofacial radiation between birth and 8 years of age (mean 5 years) and who subsequently had reconstructive surgery were reviewed.
