A qualitative examination of secondary prophylaxis in rheumatic heart disease: factors influencing adherence to secondary prophylaxis in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the most common cause of heart disease among Ugandans age 15 to 49 years. Secondary prophylaxis with monthly injection of benzathine penicillin is effective in preventing recurrence of acute rheumatic fever and worsening of RHD, but adherence rates are poor in Uganda. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to identify health behaviors, attitudes, and health care system factors that influence adherence to RHD secondary prophylaxis. METHODS: We conducted 5 structured focus groups with 36 participants on monthly penicillin injections for RHD in Kamplala, Ugan

Development and evaluation of a family-based graphical tool for longitudinal monitoring of poststroke sequelae.

BACKGROUND: Medical information regarding patient health is traditionally managed by healthcare professionals, often leaving patients and families in a passive role during the recovery process. OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate a family-based functional graphic tool-the Family Observation of Limits and Learning on Well-being (FOLLOW)-designed for the monthly assessment of post-stroke sequelae by nonprofessionals. METHODS: The tool is a color-coded visual graphic (red for no improvement, yellow for stability, and green for improvement) designed for intuitive understanding without specialize

Buffering against Depressive Symptoms: Associations between Self-Compassion, Perceived Family Support and Age for Transgender and Nonbinary Individuals.

Transgender and gender nonbinary (TGNB) individuals often report higher levels of depression compared to cisgender individuals. Higher levels of depression in TGNB populations may be partially attributed to a lack of family support, which may be particularly salient for younger individuals. However, two possible protective factors that may mitigate depressive symptoms are self-compassion, defined as an attitude of kindness and understanding towards one's own imperfections, and perceived support, especially from family. The present study aimed to explore whether self-compassion was negatively a

Association of providing/receiving support on the mortality of older adults with different living arrangements in Taiwan: a longitudinal study on ageing.

This longitudinal study evaluated the direct effects of providing/receiving family support on mortality in older adults with different living arrangements in Taiwan. All data analysed were obtained from the Taiwan Longitudinal Study on Aging, 1996-2007, of residents aged ⩾67 years (1,492 men and 1,177 women) and Taiwan's National Death Register. Living arrangements were divided into living alone, living only with spouse, living with family and living with others. Support was mainly defined as family support divided into two categories: providing and receiving. The effect of providing/receiving

Trends in Alcohol's Harms to Others (AHTO) and Co-occurrence of Family-Related AHTO: The Four US National Alcohol Surveys, 2000-2015.

Various harms from others' drinking have been studied individually and at single points in time. We conducted a US population 15-year trend analysis and extend prior research by studying associations of depression with combinations of four harms - family/marriage difficulties, financial troubles, assault, and vandalism - attributed to partners or family members. Data come from four National Alcohol Surveys conducted by telephone in 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015 (analytic sample = 21,184). Weighted logistic regression models estimated time trends adjusting for victim characteristics (gender, age,

Evolution of the Schlafen genes, a gene family associated with embryonic lethality, meiotic drive, immune processes and orthopoxvirus virulence.

Genes of the Schlafen family, first discovered in mouse, are expressed in hematopoietic cells and are involved in immune processes. Previous results showed that they are candidate genes for two major phenomena: meiotic drive and embryonic lethality (DDK syndrome). However, these genes remain poorly understood, mostly due to the limitations imposed by their similarity, close location and the potential functional redundancy of the gene family members. Here we use genomic and phylogenetic studies to investigate the evolution and role of this family of genes. Our results show that the Schlafen fam

A survey on parent-child conflict resolution: intrafamily violence in Italy.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper was to investigate factors associated with intrafamily violence toward children in Italy. Family structure and the characteristics of both caretakers and children were explored. Their association with the incidence of minor and severe violence was analyzed to test the hypothesis that child physical abuse is related to a combination of different factors involving the family as a whole. METHOD: This research was carried out by submitting an anonymous questionnaire to 2388 families residing in Tuscany, Italy. The form included two sections, one related to the

Background: Children < 5 years living in temporary accommodation (U5TA) are vulnerable to poor health outcomes. Few qualitative studies have examined service provider perspectives in family homelessness; none have focused on U5TA with a cross-sector approach. This study explored professionals’ perspectives of the barriers and facilitators, including pandemic-related challenges, experienced by U5TA in accessing healthcare and optimising health outcomes, and their experiences in delivering services. Methods: Sixteen semi-structured online interviews were conducted. Professionals working in Newha

Co-design in action: lessons learned from transplant patient and family engagement in an integrated knowledge translation strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted immunocompromised individuals, particularly transplant recipients. Despite their vulnerability, national- and international-level research often lacks direct input from this community. In response, the Canadian Donation and Transplantation Research Program (CDTRP) implemented an integrated knowledge translation (iKT) strategy that involved patient, family, and donor (PFD) partners as co-leads and decision makers throughout the research process. METHODS: Beginning in 2022, CDTRP adapted a co-engagement model to identify research prioriti

Family-Centred Care for Children and Adolescents Living With HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Children and adolescents living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) continue to face significant barriers to diagnosis, treatment adherence, retention in care and psychosocial support, despite progress in prevention and treatment coverage. Family-centred care (FCC) has emerged as a promising model that positions families-not just individual children-as the central unit of care, with potential to improve clinical and psychosocial outcomes while addressing persistent gaps in health system responsiveness. METHODS: Our scoping review synthesized evidence on FCC implementation strat

The psychosocial factors influencing paediatric kidney transplantation access, their outcomes and the patient and family's perceived quality of life: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Kidney transplantation is the gold standard treatment for children and young people (CYP) with stage 5 chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, psychosocial and structural factors including race, socioeconomic status and family context can delay or limit access to transplantation. This systematic review explores the breadth of psychological, social and societal factors influencing transplant access, outcomes and quality of life. We included peer-reviewed quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method studies with primary data. Medline, PsychInfo, CINAHL and Web of Science were searched for papers pu

Improving public health service delivery response to address contraceptive needs of socio-economically disadvantaged HIV positive people in Maharashtra, India.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV (PLHIV) receive free antiretroviral treatment (ART) in public health facilities of India. With improved life expectancy, unmet sexual and reproductive health needs of PLHIV have to be addressed through a converged programmatic response strategy. Evidence shows that socioeconomically disadvantaged women are most vulnerable to high reproductive morbidities, especially HIV positive women with an unmet need of contraception. METHODS: Programmatic convergence by linking ART and family planning services were strengthened at two public health facilities (district h

Complementary music therapy for cancer patients in at-home palliative care and their caregivers: protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with advanced cancer, receiving at-home palliative care, are subject to numerous symptoms that are changeable and often require attention, a stressful situation that also impacts on the family caregiver. It has been suggested that music therapy may benefit both the patient and the caregiver. We propose a study to analyse the efficacy and cost utility of a music intervention programme, applied as complementary therapy, for cancer patients in palliative care and for their at-home caregivers, compared to usual treatment. METHOD: A randomised, double-blind, multicentre clinic

A qualitative study of the family caregiver burden for caregivers of children with congenital cataracts from a social ecosystem theory perspective.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cataracts are one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness in children, and treatment and rehabilitation are highly dependent on family caregivers. However, research on the caregiver burden experience for children with congenital cataracts in China is limited. In particular, a systematic exploration from the perspective of social ecosystem theory is lacking. This study aimed to gain insight into the burden on family caregivers of children with congenital cataracts in China and to provide a theoretical basis for the development of systematic intervention s

Women's and girls' experiences of reproductive coercion and opportunities for intervention in family planning clinics in Nairobi, Kenya: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive coercion (RC), which includes contraceptive sabotage and pregnancy coercion, may help explain known associations between intimate partner violence (IPV) and poor reproductive health outcomes, such as unintended pregnancy. In Kenya, where 40% of ever-married women report IPV and 35% of ever-pregnant women report unintended pregnancy, these experiences are pervasive and co-occurring, yet little research exists on RC experiences among women and adolescent girls. This study seeks to qualitatively describe women's and girls' experiences of RC in Nairobi, Kenya and opportuni
