The dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) is thought to play a significant role in movement preparation cued by sensory information rather than in self-initiated movements. The evidence in humans for this contention is still circumstantial. Here we explored the effects of modulation of PMd by excitability decreasing 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) versus excitability increasing 5 Hz rTMS on two forms of movement related cortical potentials: contingent negative variation (CNV) versus Bereitschaftspotential (BP) reflecting externally cued versus self-triggered movement preparatio

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the magnitude of normal fetal brain asymmetry.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective study. Normal fetuses between 19-28 weeks of gestation were studied. The cerebral atria, occipital cortex, and hemispheres in both sides were measured. The difference between each side was evaluated and was correlated with sex, head biometry, and estimated weight.
RESULTS: Four hundred six fetuses were studied. Mean atrial width was larger in the males and on the left side (5.2% and 6.5%, respectively). Mean cortical width was 2.6% larger in males but 5.5%

Bilateral regions of the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) appear to be functionally selective for both rudimentary non-symbolic number tasks and higher-level symbolic number tasks in adults and older children. Furthermore, the ability to mentally represent and manipulate approximate non-symbolic numerical quantities is present from birth. These factors leave open whether the specialization of the IPS develops through the experience of learning a symbolic number system or if it is already specialized before symbolic number acquisition. Using the newly emerging technique of functional Near-Infrared Sp

In the present paper, we review the main concepts of the dynamical systems approach to bimanual coordination and propose applications to therapeutic intervention for functional recovery of coordinated movements in stroke. Further, we describe the behavioral alterations of discrete bimanual coordination resulting from cerebral vascular accident (CVA) lesions and speculate on the possibility of mimicking the mechanisms of CVA lesions via symmetry breaking in dynamic systems.

This study investigates the cerebellar contribution to reactive grip control by examining differences between (22-48 years) subjects with focal cerebellar lesion due to ischaemic stroke (CL) and healthy subjects (HS). The subjects used a pinch grip to grasp and restrain an instrumented handle from moving when it was subject to unpredictable load forces of different rates (2, 4, 8, 32 N/s) or amplitudes (1, 2, 4 N). The hand ipsilateral to the lesion of the cerebellar subjects showed delayed and more variable response latencies, e.g., 278 +/- 162 ms for loads delivered at 2 N/s, compared to HS

BACKGROUND: Inhibitory dysfunction is a key behavioral and cognitive phenotype of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Both disorders show neuropsychological deficits and fronto-striatal dysfunction during tasks of motor response inhibition and cognitive flexibility. This study investigates differences and commonalities in functional neural networks mediating inhibitory control between adolescents with ADHD and those with OCD to identify disorder-specific neurofunctional markers that distinguish these two inhibitory disorders.
METHODS: Event

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) is a common procedure for preventing breast and ovarian cancer in high-risk women. The goal of this study was to determine the incidence of subsequent breast cancer (BC) in a high-risk population and to identify clinical and epidemiological predictors of BC following BSO.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and thirty-three consecutive high-risk women, tested for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations due to family history, underwent preventive or therapeutic BSO at one of the study hospitals. One hundred and three patients had breast tissue at risk and w

Patients with Parkinson's disease have great difficulty in performing bimanual movements; this problem is more obvious when they perform bimanual anti-phase movements. The underlying mechanism of this problem remains unclear. In the current study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study the bimanual coordination associated changes of brain activity and inter-regional interactions in Parkinson's disease. Subjects were asked to perform right-handed, bimanual in-phase and bimanual anti-phase movements. After practice, normal subjects performed all tasks correctly. Patients with Par

The aim of this study was to determine the influence of sex on hemispheric asymmetry and cooperation in a face recognition task. We used a masked priming paradigm in which the prime stimulus was centrally presented; it could be a bisymmetric face or a hemi-face in which facial information was presented in the left or the right visual field and projected to the right or the left hemisphere. The target stimulus was always a bisymmetric face presented centrally. Faces were selected from Minear and Park's (2004) database. Fifty-two right-handed students (26 men, 26 women) participated in this expe

Traumatic anterior shoulder instability has been well documented to have associated lesions such as a Bankart tear, humeral avulsion of the glenohumeral ligament (HAGL), Hill-Sachs lesion, fracture, and nerve injury. To our knowledge, the combined Bankart and HAGL injury in a single acute anterior shoulder dislocation has not yet been reported. We describe a traumatic first-time anterior-inferior shoulder dislocation in a professional basketball player with a combined Bankart and HAGL lesion. The patient underwent arthroscopic Bankart repair followed by open repair of the HAGL lesion with an o

OBJECTIVES: The pneumatized articular eminence (PAT) of the temporal bone has been identified as an asymptomatic radiolucent appearance defect in the temporal bone. Although it occurs very rarely, when present, it may represent the potential for complications following surgical manipulation of the temporomandibular joint.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The record of 8107 patients who presented to our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services, between January 1998 and February 2008 was reviewed. Observations were made on the side and radiographic appearance of the PAT; and sex and age of patients.

BACKGROUND: Depression is associated with neural abnormalities in emotional processing.
AIMS: This study explored whether these abnormalities underlie risk for depression.
METHOD: We compared the neural responses of volunteers who were at high and low-risk for the development of depression (by virtue of high and low neuroticism scores; high-N group and low-N group respectively) during the presentation of fearful and happy faces using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
RESULTS: The high-N group demonstrated linear increases in response in the right fusiform gyrus and left middle t

Visceral pain/discomfort is the cardinal complaints and treatment targets for functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). However, effective treatment for such pain is limited and often associated with high placebo effects. The mechanisms of placebo effects in visceral pain are unclear. We used functional neuroimaging to study the central representations of the placebo effect and its anticipation during esophageal pain in healthy adults. Fourteen subjects were enrolled. Pain extent, psychophysical inventories [Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PAS), visual analogue scale (VAS) and short-form McGil

A chimera is a genetic composite containing a unique mix of cells derived from more than one zygote. This mouse model allows one to learn how cells of contrasting genotype functionally interact in vivo. Here, we investigate the effect that different proportions of prestin-containing outer hair cells (OHC) have on cochlear amplification. To address this issue, we developed a prestin chimeric mouse in which both ROSA26 wild-type (WT) and prestin knock-out (KO) genotypes are present in a single cochlea. The WT ROSA26 mice express a cell marker, allowing one to identify cells originating from the
