[The Mental Rehabilitation of Burn Patients After a Major Disaster].

Many catastrophic disasters have happened in Taiwan over the last decade. As disaster is not a special occurrence but rather a part of the norm, mental rehabilitation should be treated as a mainstream issue in psychiatry. The internalization of emergency psychological interventions is necessary for every mental-health professional. The two primary categories of major manmade disasters in Taiwan over the past decade have been gas explosions and powder burns. Both categories have led to the serious injury of many individuals. The physical deformities and job problems faced by burn patients affec

The Collateral Damage of Mass Incarceration: Risk of Psychiatric Morbidity Among Nonincarcerated Residents of High-Incarceration Neighborhoods.

Objectives. We examined whether residence in neighborhoods with high levels of incarceration is associated with psychiatric morbidity among nonincarcerated community members. Methods. We linked zip code-linked information on neighborhood prison admissions rates to individual-level data on mental health from the Detroit Neighborhood Health Study (2008-2012), a prospective probability sample of predominantly Black individuals. Results. Controlling for individual- and neighborhood-level risk factors, individuals living in neighborhoods with high prison admission rates were more likely to meet cri

Cross Racial Identity Scale (CRIS) scores and profiles in African American adolescents involved with the juvenile justice system.

In this study, we examined the internal consistency and structural validity of Cross Racial Identity Scale (CRIS) scores in a sample of 477 African American adolescents who had been arrested in a city in the mid-Atlantic. Using cluster analysis, we also identified profiles of CRIS scores and compared adolescents with different profiles on Major Depressive Episode, Manic Episode, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder scores. Results indicated that CRIS subscale scores were reliable, and the 6-factor structure of the CRIS was supported. Five nigrescence profiles were id

A study of so-called hypochondriasis.

Twenty-four patients with unexplained somatic complaints were subjected to a thorough somatic examination. Only when the examination proved negative was the patient entered into the study. The patients were clinically appraised according to criteria given in DSM-III. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) was diagnosed in 12, somatization disorder (SD) in 8, and hypochondriasis in 4 patients. Seventeen of the 24 patients agreed to participate in biochemical investigations including a TRH load, a dexamethasone test, and a determination of the monoamine metabolites 5-HIAA and HVA in cerebrospinal fl

Mental health and initiation of antiretroviral treatment at enrolment into HIV care in Cameroon under a national "treat all" policy: a cross-sectional analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid antiretroviral treatment (ART) initiation reduces time from HIV infection to viral suppression, decreasing HIV transmission risk. Mental health symptoms may influence timing of ART initiation. This study estimated the prevalence of ART initiation at enrolment into HIV care and the relationship between mental health and ART initiation at enrolment into HIV care. METHODS: We conducted interviews with 426 individuals initiating HIV care in Cameroon between June 2019 and March 2020 to estimate the association between mental health and timing of ART initiation. Depression (Pati

Hobnail hemangioma.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) comprise an extensive spectrum of conditions that originate from diverse complex components of the temporomandibular joint. It is generally acknowledged that the biopsychosocial model is the preeminent framework for understanding the aetiology of TMDs. Anxiety, depression, and tension are among the psychological disorders that are commonly observed in dental students. The current research probed the propinquity of psychosocial stressors and TMD-like symptoms among clinical dental undergraduates residing in the Aseer region of Saudi Arabia, with a

Onset and remission of common mental disorders among adults living in temporary housing for three years after the triple disaster in Northeast Japan: comparisons with the general population.

BACKGROUND: People living in temporary housing for long periods after a disaster are at risk of poor mental health. This study investigated the post-disaster incidence and remission of common mental disorders among adults living in temporary housing for the 3 years following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. METHODS: Three years after the disaster, face-to-face interviews were conducted with 1089 adult residents living in temporary housing in the disaster area, i.e., the shelter group, and a random sample of 852 community residents from non-disaster areas of East Japan. Life-time history of suicide attempts and coronary artery disease in a community-dwelling elderly population.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have observed a strong relationship between coronary artery disease (CAD) and psychiatric disorder; notably depression, anxiety and panic attacks. No study has, however, explored the question of whether persons suffering from CAD might also be at high risk of suicide attempts. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study is to examine the relationship between CAD within a general population cohort and life-time history of psychiatric disorder and suicidal behaviour. METHOD: A representative sample of 1,843 non-institutionalized persons over 65, drawn at random from th

Comorbidity of gastrointestinal complaints, depression, and anxiety in the Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) Study.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine if the high prevalence rates of major depression, panic disorder, and agoraphobia found in tertiary-care studies of irritable bowel syndrome and medically unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms are also found in the general population. Structured psychiatric interviews on 18,571 subjects from the NIMH Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) Study were reviewed for prevalence of gastrointestinal distress symptoms and selected psychiatric disorders. Medically unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms had a high prevalence in the general population (6-25%).

A Preliminary Investigation on the Effects of Atenolol for Treating Symptoms of Anxiety.

INTRODUCTION: Anxiety disorders are among the most commonly diagnosed of psychiatric disorders. Many symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder are also anxiety-related. Traditional medications used to treat these disorders, such as antidepressants and benzodiazepines, are often ineffective, not well-tolerated, and can be habit forming. An alternative agent is, therefore, needed. Beta-blockers are one class of medication with potential to treat anxiety-related disorders; however, current evidence remains limited and requires further characterization. To this end, this retrospective study aims t

Opioid use disorder in adult burn patients: Implications for future mental health, behavioral and substance use patterns.

BACKGROUND: Burn patients continue to have a high opioid requirement, despite current national trends to decrease opioid prescribing. While effective, long-term opioid use results in opioid dependence and possibly other mental health comorbidities. This retrospective cohort study seeks to evaluate implications of diagnosed opioid use disorder in the development of subsequent psychiatric, behavioral and substance abuse patterns. METHODS: The TriNetX database was queried for patients 18 years and older with a diagnosis of thermal or chemical burn who developed opioid use disorder after their bu

Principal and additional DSM-IV disorders for which outpatients seek treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Epidemiological studies indicate that most patients in the community do not get treatment for psychiatric disorders. It is unknown whether persons who present for outpatient psychiatric services seek treatment for all the disorders they have or only for the principal disorder for which they are seeking treatment. The goal of this study was to determine which axis I psychiatric disorders motivate patients to seek treatment. METHODS: Four hundred outpatients at a hospital-affiliated, community-based, psychiatric clinical practice were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Intervie

Balancing mental health through predictive modeling for healthcare workers during public health crises.

During public health emergencies such as SARS, Ebola, and COVID-19, healthcare workers (HCWs) are often on the front lines, placing them at increased risk for adverse mental health outcomes, particularly depression and anxiety. Despite this risk, there remains a scarcity of research focused on developing predictive models to forecast the depression and anxiety levels of healthcare workers under challenging conditions. A total of 349 HCWs were selected from a Tertiary Grade-A hospital in the city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province in China. Depression and anxiety were assessed using the Patient Hea

Home-based digital counselling by frontline community workers for anxiety and depression symptoms in rural Sindh, Pakistan: the mPareshan intervention.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence that interventions for improving mental well-being can be integrated sustainably into primary health care in Pakistan. We piloted 'mPareshan digital intervention' locally, adapted from WHO mhGAP and delivered by trained and supervised women lay workers to learn if it was feasible and possibly effective in reducing anxiety and depression prior to proposing implementation on a larger scale. METHODS: Using Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a baseline household survey was conducted by independent data collector
