Anticoagulant and antiplatelet treatment effects on the incidence of major cardiovascular events in patients with coronary artery ectasia: An updated systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Coronary artery ectasia (CAE), widenings in sections of the arteries, is a rare condition found in up to 3-5% of angiography cases. Sometimes recurrence of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) has been reported in the CAE subjects. The present systematic review aims to collect and summarize reports on whether the use of anticoagulants in addition to single antiplatelet/dual antiplatelet therapy (SAPT/DAPT) in CAE patients with significant occlusion/heavy thrombus is efficient and safe in decreasing the incidence/recurrence of MACE. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematically comprehen

Incidence and progression of atrial fibrillation in patients with and without heart failure using mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) have emerged as potential therapy to target the underlying arrhythmogenic substrate in atrial fibrillation (AF). Nevertheless, there have been inconsistent results on the impact of MRAs on AF. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the effect of MRAs on AF incidence and progression in patients with and without heart failure. METHODS: Electronic databases were searched up to September, 2022 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated MRA use and reported AF outcomes. Primary outcome was a composite of new-onset or recurrent AF. Sa

Mayaro Virus: An Emerging Alphavirus in the Americas.

Mayaro virus (MAYV) is an arbovirus first isolated in Trinidad and Tobago in 1954. MAYV is the causative agent of Mayaro fever, which is characterised by high fever, maculopapular rash, myalgia and arthralgia. The potential for chronic arthralgia is of particular clinical concern. Currently, MAYV outbreaks are restricted to South and Central America, with some cases reported in Africa as well as several imported cases in Europe. However, in recent years, MAYV has become a growing global concern due to its potential to emerge into urban transmission cycles. Challenges faced with diagnostics, as

Global epidemiology, genotype distribution and coinfection rate of Human Aichi virus: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Acute gastroenteritis is a major health concern for all age groups and accounts for more than 2.5 million deaths annually in children under five years old. Human Aichi virus causes acute gastroenteritis and is associated with foodborne outbreaks. Little is known about its pathogenicity, evolution, and geographical distribution. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the global seroprevalence of AiV-1 and its genotype distribution, track outbreaks, and estimate co-infection rates with other viral gastroenteritis. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic search of the epidemiological a

Are Retinal Detachments Becoming More Frequent? Data from 2 University Eye Clinics and Literature Review.

There have been marked increases in the numbers of patients with retinal detachments at individual centres in recent years and this is supported by the subjective impression of many experts. We therefore surveyed the literature on changes in the incidence of retinal detachments worldwide. This revealed quite significant methodological differences between the studies, so that it was difficult to achieve a conclusive comparison of the development of the incidence of retinal detachment. Despite these limitations, all data from recent studies suggest an increase in the number of retinal detachment

Association between sleep and myopia in children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: There is a scarcity of literature focusing on sleep's impact on myopia in children despite an epidemic rise of myopia among the age group and the importance of early prevention. As such, this systematic review-meta-analysis aims to evaluate the association between various aspects of sleep and myopia in children and adolescents aged 0-19 years. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library on 08/12/2022 for studies reporting sleep in relation to myopia among children and adolescents. Myopia was defined as spherical equivalent refraction < -0.5 diopter. The primary outcome

Progress Toward Poliomyelitis Eradication - Worldwide, January 2021-March 2023.

Since the World Health Assembly established the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in 1988, two of the three wild poliovirus (WPV) serotypes (types 2 and 3) have been eradicated, and global WPV cases have decreased by more than 99.9%. Afghanistan and Pakistan remain the only countries where indigenous WPV type 1 (WPV1) transmission has not been interrupted. This report summarizes progress toward global polio eradication during January 1, 2021-March 31, 2023, and updates previous reports (1,2). In 2022, Afghanistan and Pakistan reported 22 WPV1 cases, compared with five in 2021; as of M

Global, regional, and country estimates of metabolic syndrome burden in children and adolescents in 2020: a systematic review and modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: Halting the rise in cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents is crucial to curb the global burden of cardiovascular diseases. We aim to provide global, regional, and national estimates of the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in children and adolescents to support the development of evidence-based prevention strategies. METHODS: In this systematic review with modelling analysis, we searched PubMed, Embase, Africa Journal Online, and Global Index Medicus from database inception to Jan 30, 2021, with no restriction on language or geographical location. PM2.5-related neonatal encephalopathy due to birth asphyxia and trauma: a global burden study from 1990 to 2019.

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) may increase the risk of neonatal encephalopathy due to birth asphyxia and trauma. However, little is known about the trends of PM2.5-related neonatal encephalopathy burden under different levels of social and economic development. We studied the burden of PM2.5-related neonatal encephalopathy due to birth asphyxia and trauma measured by the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and the age-standardized disability-adjusted life years rate (ASDR), and its trends with the socio-demographic index (SDI) in 192 countries and regions from 1990 t

Emerging challenges to realizing global polio eradication and their solutions.

BACKGROUND: The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) promised to eradicate polio by 2000, yet the disease remains endemic in 2 countries. The current threat of resurgence in countries with low vaccine coverage and circulating vaccinederived poliovirus (cVDPV) outbreaks due to oral polio vaccine warrants a strategy review. AIMS: To review the performance of the GPEI from a context based in Pakistan, identifying threats to success and suggesting strategy modifications to help achieve eradication. METHODS: This was a desk review of the effectiveness of GPEI that was launched in 1988 to er

Years of life lost to COVID-19 in 81 countries.

Understanding the mortality impact of COVID-19 requires not only counting the dead, but analyzing how premature the deaths are. We calculate years of life lost (YLL) across 81 countries due to COVID-19 attributable deaths, and also conduct an analysis based on estimated excess deaths. We find that over 20.5 million years of life have been lost to COVID-19 globally. As of January 6, 2021, YLL in heavily affected countries are 2-9 times the average seasonal influenza; three quarters of the YLL result from deaths in ages below 75 and almost a third from deaths below 55; and men have lost 45% more

Risk factors of invasive fungal infections in lung transplant recipients: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infection (IFI) remains a common complication after lung transplantation, causing significant morbidity and mortality. We have attempted to quantify systematically risk factors of IFI in lung transplant recipients. METHODS: Studies were retrieved from Ovid MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, Cochrane database of systematic reviews and Cochrane central register of controlled trials. All case-control and cohort studies evaluating the risk factors of IFI in adult lung transplant recipients were screened. Two researchers reviewed and assessed all studies independently. Mosquito Vector Competence for Japanese Encephalitis Virus.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a zoonotic pathogen mainly found in East and Southeast Asia and transmitted by mosquitoes. The objective of this review is to summarize the knowledge on the diversity of JEV mosquito vector species. Therefore, we systematically analyzed reports of JEV found in field-caught mosquitoes as well as experimental vector competence studies. Based on the investigated publications, we classified 14 species as confirmed vectors for JEV due to their documented experimental vector competence and evidence of JEV found in wild mosquitoes. Additionally, we identified 11 m

Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Global Poliovirus Surveillance.

On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (1). On March 24, 2020, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) suspended all polio supplementary immunization activities and recommended the continuation of polio surveillance (2). In April 2020, GPEI shared revised polio surveillance guidelines in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, which focused on reducing the risk for transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, to health care workers and communities by modifying a

Redefining fatty liver disease: an international patient perspective.

Despite its increased recognition as a major health threat, fatty liver disease associated with metabolic dysfunction remains largely underdiagnosed and undertreated. An international consensus panel has called for the disease to be renamed from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) and has suggested how the disease should be diagnosed. This Viewpoint explores the call from the perspective of patient advocacy groups. Patients are well aware of the negative consequences of the NAFLD acronym. This advocacy group enthusiastically endorses th

Pediatric Dyslipidemia-Beyond Familial Hypercholesterolemia.

Dyslipidemia is seen with increasing prevalence in young Canadians, mainly mild to moderate hypertriglyceridemia secondary to obesity. This review focuses on pediatric dyslipidemias excluding familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), but including both severe and mild to moderate hypertriglyceridemia, combined hyperlipidemia, and elevated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)]. We suggest that for Canadian children and adolescents with dyslipidemia, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk assessment should include both low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride measurement. To further stratify
